Amber colour with a decent firm head.
Malt aroma.
Soft and subtle malt and hop balance.
A nice easy drinker and a much welcome pint at a hostelry in Lincoln.

This is Batemans cooking bitter (as my Dad calls it), meaning it is their basic brew and not their best beer. It is one of only two cask ales at his local and is what I always have when visiting home: surprised I’ve never reviewed it before.
This review is of a pint taken at my towns Wetherspoons during their beer festival. Hand pulled and into a UK straight sleeve: Mid to light amber in colour, with a dull white head on top, good lacing and a pleasant look all round.
Challenger, Goldings and Styrian hops give the beer a hop aroma but not overly so, the pale and chocolate malts (local Lincolnshire ones) ensure the malts also feature in both the smell and taste.
Easy drinking session ale, well balanced, a true classic Pale Ale Bitter. The flavours belittle its alcohol content, well worth trying if you come across it. Rarely seen outside the Batemans pub estate; XXXB being their biggest seller to the free trade.

In all my years of drinking beer the name of Bateman had illuded me (despite its lengthy history) until I came across it in a local in Dulwich, South London. It is relatively low alcohol (3.7 %), but I was really taken aback by the quality and freshness of flavour this beer exhibited. Copper-amber colour, modest head from the cask, clean fruity nose. On the palate very clean and fresh flavours, restrained hop bitterness, but a vibrancy of fruit, a touch of citrus, that makes this a memorable and drinkable beer.

A 500ml bottle with a BB of April 2012. ABV is stated as 4.1%.
Poured into a tulip pint glass. A clear coppery-amber hue with medium carbonation. Forms a decent head of frothy off-white foam that lasts for a minute or so before subsiding. Aroma of sweet caramel malt with fruity yeast esters and stewed hops. A vaguely unpleasant off-note in the background.
Tastes of caramel malt with a dry, yeasty character. Notes of caramel/toffee, fruity yeast esters and stewed hops. A nuttiness is discernible, and a stale hint in the background. Subtle bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth and tingly, but a little thin. Slightly astringent. Aftertaste of bitter malt.
A decidedly mediocre ale. Described on the label as their best bitter, but I know they can do better than this. Boring - don't bother hunting it down.

I've reviewed the bottle because I just picked up some cheap and what a bargain, of course the cask version has the edge but this is a bit of alright.
Slightly darker than your average bitter, big bubbles and not many
Robust flavour big on malt then dry on hops.
Alright mouthfeel
basic standard bitter, which is actually a good thing
a very good thing.
