Pours a dark brown with a light tan head that leaves spotty lacing. Aroma is mildly fruity and mild toasted malt. Taste is lightly toasted malt, a hint of chocolate, and smoke. Quick finish of cocoa and toasty malt. Light body, thin and watery palate, light to average carbonation. Fairly weak and somewhat disappointing to my palate.

Pours out to a generous, creamy, and permanent buff head and dark mahogany-ruby color. Aroma is light and subtle with notes of roasted malt and a touch of pepper and charred toast with a hint of earthy, spicy hops. Flavor is also mild (hey, it's a damn mild, get over it) Maintaining a creamy roasty front and dry, tangy and grainy finish. Mouthfeel is exceptional with light carbonation and substantial body for a 4.2% abv brew that translates to nitro-like creaminess.

It is OK to give this beer props. It's not a double imperial anything because it is not supposed to be. The ratings I see on here are harsh. Milds are not known for huge flavor or alcohol kick, but it is tasty but not in a ESB, porter or EPA way. The real treat is how this beer feels in the mouth. This is an excellent choice for a session beer. I could drink this all night knowing I drank "real beer" while not getting schlagered.

Appearance: Deep reddish amer in color, quite clear, with a fairly large, coarse white head, which retains fairly well. The lacing is Belgian-like, the carbonation very slight, consisting of a few bubbles that drift lazily to the surface.

Aroma: Roasted malt, caramel, and some slight nutty aroma.

Taste: Opens with roasted malt, as the taste progresses, a little caramel is noted. Later in the taste, mild charred flavors dominate. Finishes with a mild burnt note.

Mouth feel: Soft, fairly full, with a little zesty carbonation.

Drinkability/notes: A decent session beer, quite drinkable.

Presentation: Packaged in a stubby twelve-ounce brown glass bottle with a pry-off crown, served in a New Belgium Brewing chalice.

Dark cola brown appearance, with a big khaki beige head forms thick and the lacing clings to the sides of the glass I'm drinking from. Aroma hints of dark ripened fruit with a prominent roasted malt character mild leafy herbal tobacco like hop offerings. Flavors express themselves as roasted malt hints of toffee an English style dark mild with minimal flavor but expressive hints of good beer are here. Good to know I can get this style now in a grocery store in America, I applaud this effort and every other micro like beer they continue to release. The low alcohol beer tends to save some miles on the old liver, and for that I enjoy this lower alcohol offering even more so. It's not up to the flavor level that I would like to have but it's a solid crossover beer even keeled carbonation smooth going down, overall this is a beer that the masses will find revolutionary. For me it's just okay, but I'm not sad that I gave it a go.

Brown caramel pour, thin but resilient cover with light lacing.
Sweet, toasty aroma with coffee notes.
Similar to the smell, sweet with toasty notes of bread and coffee.
Crisp, medium bodied but with some frothiness.
Good session brew.

Appearance: Appears black, but close inspection shows it to be dark brown, light will pass through it showing some haziness. Doesn't hold a head, or really a collar.

Smell: Earthy, dusty, a bit of river water, nothing wrong, just a bit base.

Taste: A mild ribbon of dark toasted mat which goes a bit dark malt extract, give the package a fair flavor, but it's all a bit thin. Light tonic water, metallic coppery bit in the finish.

Mouthfeel: Prickly despite the lack of a head, a bit fizzy with the light body.

Overall: A thin version of a nice style. Hate to see this underdone, not so much in volume but in body. A little more protein would give it some substance and make it a bit more refreshing and quenching. As it is, it's better than a standard macro beer, but you'll not long for one.

Clear dark brown colored beer with a small tan colored head. I can see how this could be called black.

Smells malty and a little smokey. English hop aromas mostly leather and tobacco leaf.

Starts out mildly sweet with a smoky after taste. Not real strongly flavored I pick up a bit of treacle. Little bit of bitterness in the after taste.

Mouthfeel is good.

Overall a beer that is worth a try. Like all Newcastle beers it is on the mild and subtle side.
