I am really surprised by the poor reviews on this beer. It really makes me question the "expert's" expertise. By no means is this the best beer I have ever drank, but it is a really good all purpose beer. It goes well with food, relaxation, refreshment, and just to fill that beer craving.

My favorite brown ale. As I read the previous ratings, and reviews I am wondering if I am doing something wrong. I absolutely love this beer. It is best on tap though, tons better then from the bottle but isn't that the way it is for most beers?

Presentation: 12 FL OZ custom clear bottle.

Appearance: Tawny/leathery brown. Nice and rich in colour with a bit of a creamy, bubbly lace of a head. Semi-sticky and seems to retain well.

Smell: Medicinal, astringent aromas. Smells crisp and clean. Most of the smells come from the funky ass Ringwood yeast.

Taste: Sweet (but not very malty) and light bodied in the begining. Toasted notes. A crispness creeps up pretty quickly followed by corn sweetness and a definite alcohol taste distinctly from the added maize grits. DMS (cooked vegetables) is also on the palate. Hop notes are leafy, a bit oily. They meld with the prominent yeast profile, that seems to dominate, to create a dryness. Brew gets a bit tea-like, then the tongue then gets coated with a light hop oil/astringent dose of residual flavours from the yeast. Finishes odd.

Notes: This brew uses corn grits, added liquid sugar and is pasteurised. Hardly a "real ale" from England. It's very much a commercial beer these days, and long gone is the age old "goodness." It's now another brew victim to global fame and demand. Despite this, it's drinkable. Not the best brew, or Brown Ale even. In fact, some might find its claimed "special flavour" hard to swallow. Newky Brown uses the tag line "The One and Only" ... let's hope so.

This was my brown ale of choice a while back that I would get in 12 packs before I got into all the dark brown ales, stouts, porters etc. Actually a decent beer if you are quaffing a few and doing stuff outside in the summer. It's not the sort of beer you really want to sit down with to analyze all the subtle complexities and richness.

I've come across rumors that this supposedly goes extremely well with chocolate cake. The combination was ok, but nothing special. By itself, though, this is a decent drink that's worth having again.

Not so bad, my go-to beer if I'm drinking somewhere that doesn't sell microbrews, porters, stouts, IPA's, etc. when I'm not in the mood for Guiness. Preferable to the other beers you can usually find typical chain restaurants.

I had this on tap at my local Red Robin, served in a tulip glass.

Appearance: Dark brown opaque color with a very small off-white head and minimal lacing. Lots of carbonation in the glass.

Smell: At first I smelled nothing, but then after a moment I got the faintest hint of malt.

Taste: A bit watery on the first sip, with a malty, slight medicinal presence on the tongue. At first I was decidedly underwhelmed, but the taste actually did improve over time until I thought, "Hey, this isn't too bad."

Mouthfeel: Heavily carbonated, a bit watery, some bitterness on the back end.

Overall: On tap I have no problems drinking this beer. It's not great and not awful. I wouldn't get it in the bottle.

(Draft revisited, Canyon Club, Agoura Hills CA 3/8/15) Cream of mushroom soup. Some brown sugar maltiness comes through after awhile. Can remember when this beer was in my top 5 many moons ago.

Had this on tap at BWW. No head. Average brown ale. On a warm day, you can definitely crush several of these quite rapidly. On tap is much better than cans or bottles.

Pours with a small, white head. Is reddish brown in color. Initial taste is of malts combined with sweet, floral flavors. Malts and floral flavors persist through final taste as a nutty flavor enters. Sweetness from the floral flavors are a bit high and throw the beer off balance. Overall, a slightly better than average brown ale.

Good place to start people into craft beer. .
Id like to consider this beer as beer purgatory.
Dark caramel. Semi sweet. Filling medium body.
Not bitter. Not sweet. Not the best but not the worst.
Middle of the road for anyone training their pallet to jump from mass production beer over to ipa style.

Ah. Newcastle. This was one of my Brown Ales and I used to think it was the flagship of the style. Time has not been overly kind to this beer. I've heard and read plenty of things that make me avoid Newcastle, but I decided to give it another go during a recent pub visit. Really, this beer is much like I remember it - fizzy, thin, with a bit of chocolate and malt. There are so many other great Browns out there - this is not one I will be actively seeking out.

From a bottle, pours a transparent dark mahogany brown. Very smooth and silky. Malt forward for sure, very little hops coming through. It is a brown ale after all. Its good for the style.

For a mass produced brown ale, it rates better than most commercial offerings. Readily available when nothing else is, priced right, and always a decent choice.

The fatal flaw with the Newcastle Brown Ale is it's clear bottle. Unless you're drinking it on tap, or drinking it right out of the box from England, its often properly skunked. It's a beer that is meant to taste smooth that's given a smokey skunked smell and flavour. If I hadn't had the beer at several different venues I wouldn't have said anything, but it's a real problem, especially when you're buying a beer. Put your beer in amber bottles, you don't know how they're stored in other places or how they'll be perceived, because otherwise, the beer is actually good. I wouldn't recommend this beer to even my worst enemies until this problem has been attended to, come on guys.
