A statement from Appalachia. American Chinook, Citra, and Centennial hops from the Pacific Northwest shine in our first West Coast style IPA. Typically scotish. Typically traditional, customary, familiar. But Highland Brewing Company is showing that they are not hindered by the restraints of history. Their "west-coast" style IPA shows the forward thinking attitude that the kilt-wearing mascot shows is ebbing and flowing with the current craft beer momentum.

Simply and aptly named, Highland IPA is a bright golden elixir with an exuberent carbonated body and a frothy white head. Above its endearing crystal body, a perfume medley culminates with citrus, herb and fresh pine shavings. Its taste holds a mild caramel base with hints of toasted graham cracker.

As the malts begin to recede, a full-on hoppy display replaces the sweetness and boasts its own juicy taste of tangerine, red grapefruit and vibrant mango. Both tropical and citrusy in taste, the ale continues drying as the fruit impressions drop their fructose aspirations and favor a dry rind-like citrus quality with fresh muddled herbs and a soft and resinous bitterness seems of juniper and pine.

Medium-light on the palate, the beer nearly sheds all of its malt character in order to favor the hops completely. Its dryness exposes a spicy acetone finish with those deeply resious hops accenting a peppery bite and a long linger of grapefruit rind and sappy pine.

Filled on 1/6/16.Pours into a standard pint glass a clear brass with a bone white thinner but well sustained head atop.A big shot of grapefruit really hits ya up front in the nose along with underlying pine, and tangerine.Grapefruit and tangerine flavors battle it out for most assertive hop notes with the grapefruit edging it out but wow what a big fresh splash,a bit of caramel doughiness lingers in the finish. What can I say Highland produces another great beer, not just a ho hum IPA here, very well made.

12oz brown bottle, sample from the brewery.

Good looking pale amber hue, lacing all the way down the glass. Big citrus zest, pith, rind nose with some breadiness in the back. Crisp with a hop bite, ample bitterness with a full compliment of citrusy hop flavor. A little juicy with suggestion of tobacco and green tea as well. Kiss of alcohol warmth. Very well put together and quite the run at the PNW style IPA.

Juicy but not brightly citrusy.

Not my cup of tea frankly. I am an IPA fan, but the aftertaste (the malt perhaps) is a little overpowering for my palette. Glad I tried, but would not seek out.

L: Pours a slightly hazy, golden yellow. The 1 finger of white head dissipates rather quickly.

S: Citrus, some pine.

T: Follows nose. Slightly dry finish with some pine bitterness at the end.

F: Medium bodied, moderate carbonation.

O: A rock solid ipa. Very well done.

Had bottles in blue ridge. Ok. Would have again but not priority.

Looks decent and has minimum head. To me, this is a nother IPA that has too much malt that detracts from what should have been a more citrusy and hoppy offering

Highland seems to be upping their game. This is a very good IPA with a malt base that makes the hops pop. It is also a great looking beer, with a crystal clear, burnished gold body and fluffy, tight white head that just does not give up. At $7.99 a sixer, I'll be hitting this one again.
