This isn't a get-drunk beer; this is an exceptional porter that should be enjoyed with a steak and friends. Don't eat the friends, lol. Excellent, possibly the best beer I've ever tried. I wish I could take this beer to every company that makes a porter and say, "This is how you make a porter."

Got 2 bottles of Oatmeal Porter in the Mountain Medley 12 pack this time; love how they hand pack these differently all the time....poured into new Tipping Point small pub glass (awesome beers there-more later).

Didn't quite get the head I was looking for, but might be me new to this glass. Super dark brown, then auburn at the window...small tan head, great smells of dark roast malts...I love that it's not coffee and chocolate first, this is BEER, and a mighty fine one! I am not a world class porter master taster, but this is exactly what I want in a porter.

Great medium feel, some subtle crunchy crispness, beautiful dry finish makes me want another.
I love the abv on this, and it's so good that a few will put some bees in your hive if you're not careful.

My new favorite beer, this week....definitely going in for the 12 of these for 14.44 tomorrow mornin'!

On tap at Duckworths in Charlotte

The beer is nearly black with deep ruby highlights when held up to the light. The huge dark tan head is dense and has good retention. Very little spotty lacing is left behind.

The aroma is not huge, but is strong enough to leave an impression. Hints of chocolate and coffee blend well with the smokey undertones and malty backbone. There is a faint hint of hops, but you really have to be looking for it to notice it.

The flavor is big on coffee and chocolate. There is a great malty profile that is right on the verge of bitter, but doesn't quite cross that line. The hops are more pronounced in the flavor than in the aroma. The oatmeal gives it a silky mouthfeel and medium body. Quite complex and rather enjoyable.

Highland never fails to impress

Courtesy of cjohnson.

Dark brown in color with some amber/garnet hues when held to the light. Frothy cappuccino colored head that fades fairly fast, though some awesome rings of sticky lace are left behind.

Sweet and roasty aroma. Chocolate, mild coffee, graham cracker, and Nilla Wafers. Oats add a nice smoothness to the nose. Yum.

Underlying coffee flavor that never becomes assertive but makes for a nice platform. Malty sweetness is well balanced by the roasted and hop bitterness. Notes of cocoa, coffee, and vanilla. A little caramel as well. Exceptionally smooth tasting. A nice blending of flavors. Finishes slightly dry with some lingering bittersweet chocolate.

Medium bodied, silky smooth and creamy. A real luxurious mouthfeel - gotta love the mighty little oat. So easy to drink - I could easily but a few of these away in a sitting. So wonderfully smooth in flavor and texture. A nice departure from those thin porters with harsh crispness that leave you wanting more than roasted acidity.

Highly recommended - more enjoyable to me than Highland's Black Mocha Stout. Great thanks to cjohnson.

I guess I would say, for a porter this beer has a less bitter taste than others I have tried.

Appearance: This one pours very black with a nice frothy head about an inch worth's.

Aromas: Very prevalent chocolate notes light coffee hints.

Taste: Big chocolate notes wonderfully malty with a nice hoppy balance. Also a nice smooth mouthfeel.

Notes: This a great style of porter I have had porters before but not this style untill now. Lace lines the glass all the way through. It's also very drinkable. I could definately scarf down a few of these. Cheers
