I haven’t ever tried Highland Brewing Company, but I picked up an excellent type of beer called an English-style IPA. This variety has 6.0% ABV as opposed to the incorrectly recorded 5.6% ABV listed on beeradvocate.

Look-This one pours a crystal clear golden yellow color that reminds me of a light honey or perhaps a lager. The head does not exist, but instead is a thin film. The lacing is sparse, but is moist and delicate.

Smell-I get a subtle bouquet of flowers and citrus. I also pick up on some slight spices and light malts.

Taste-The taste is more apparent than the aroma was, but has a grainy malt base tinged with maybe bread and yeast. The hops are various floral subtleties, a tinge of citrus like orange and clementine, and lastly a very mild bitterness that is almost imperceptible. I would say that the IBUs taste like 50-55, but apparently they are more like 60, eh, I think that is believable, but this is definitely a well-balanced and tampered brew…in a good way. The bitterness comes at the very end right when the most carbonation is released.

Mouthfeel-It is medium-bodied with a refreshing feel. It also has a creamy and moist feel with medium carbonation.

Overall-I was pleasantly surprised by this beer. I wasn’t expecting much, but one of my first few experiences with EIPAs was a good one with this variety in particular. The malts and hops are well-balanced and do not go over the top like stronger IPA styles might. It’s refreshing and crisp and could be drinkable all year round. Cheers!

not what i expect in an IPA, but here the nuance is great. it's main component is a caramel candy taste with a very interesting fruit, hop and malt that hints at a piney coffee/cola, but this is anecdotal. i love this trick to my nose. it is a very drinkable beer. it's sweeter than i'm typically use to, but it's brewed with either french broad river or well water from this area, both which are sweet and offers a wholesome taste. i use to live in asheville and the water is awesome. btw, new belgium is brewing from the same river or if a well, maybe the same aquifer. look below the big bridge to the south and you'll see the brewery on the west bank. anyway i know this isn't typical beer jargon, but it's my take on it. i really like this "ipa".
