Style: American Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Highland’s most robust beer, having a very malty body with a large, roasted chocolate flavor, all achieved solely through the use of special roasted barley grains. It is black in color with a very clean finish and moderate hop flavor.

While the porter style was developing, some brewers produced a stout porter and over time generated a new style known simply as stout. These beers traditionally contain a distinct roasted malt flavor and can run the gamut from a dry stout, such as Guinness to a sweet stout such as Watney’s Cream Stout. Our Black Mocha falls in the sweet stout range and derives its chocolate and coffee tones from the use of appropriate roasted malt grains and is very often used as an after dinner libation or an accompaniment to dessert.

A little thin in the body. Does give some interesting roasted flavors, but the taste that I am left with ends up being burnt nuts. Drinkable, but not eagerly.

This is a solid Stout. Best enjoyed slowly, watching reruns of Luther on BBC. So, the look is quite nice. Black with a nice brown head. The lacing is nearly non-existent. A roasted malt nose with not much of the mocha coming through. The taste is not a WC Porter but it still provides you with mocha notes, dark roasted barley, and chocolate notes. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with mild bitterness.

The thin half-inch beige head quickly drops to a veil leaving no lace on a Guinness pint glass. The Stout is very dark brown and clear with black walnut highlights. Carbonation appears to be held in suspension.

Opens with rich mocha coffee followed by deep roasted malt. There is also an unwelcome soapiness. Warmth brings out a light aroma of wheat bread.

This Stout is on the sweet side with milk chocolate and latte alternating places. Late bitterness leads to a moderate, lingering finish.

The body is medium with a velvety smooth, perhaps even creamy, texture. Alcohol is above expectations and the carbonation is fine and fizzy.

This seems like a quintessential Stout to be enjoyed with ones' buddies.

Poured from a bottle into a mason jar. Enjoyed on the porch with a friend.

It's a good, dark, creamy-headed, lacy stout. I got the malty and coffee flavors, but the so much the chocolate some report.
