Style: American Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Highland’s most robust beer, having a very malty body with a large, roasted chocolate flavor, all achieved solely through the use of special roasted barley grains. It is black in color with a very clean finish and moderate hop flavor.

While the porter style was developing, some brewers produced a stout porter and over time generated a new style known simply as stout. These beers traditionally contain a distinct roasted malt flavor and can run the gamut from a dry stout, such as Guinness to a sweet stout such as Watney’s Cream Stout. Our Black Mocha falls in the sweet stout range and derives its chocolate and coffee tones from the use of appropriate roasted malt grains and is very often used as an after dinner libation or an accompaniment to dessert.

Appearance - Pours black with cola brown edging where light can penetrate. Khaki, near finger width head that dissipates rather quickly, leaving behind a mostly barren surface. Not much lacing aside from some small spotting and a broken line here and there.

Smell - Roasty, chocolatey aroma with a bit of earth.

Taste - Follows the nose. Deeply roasty and chocolatey in flavor. Faint milk chocolate sweetness. A touch of earth mid-taste and then some coffee ground bitterness in the finish.

Mouthfeel - Medium-bodied with moderate carbonation. Smooth drinker, but a bit thin in the finish for a stout.

Overall - Very tasty Stout. Flavor-wise, reminds me a lot of Deschutes Obsidian. A bit thin, but at 5% not unexpected. Kinda pricey, but the flavor almost makes it worth it.

First had at Bull McCabe's, Durham, North Carolina, on draft into tumbler. Despite the name, this Black Mocha Stout is not too sweet, and it has plenty of depth for a 5.00 beer.

Pours dark brown to almost black with a 1 1/2 finger tan head that leaves loads of thick sticky lacing.

Notes of coffee and dark chocolate in the aroma with a hint of dark fruits.

Mocha in taste. Somewhat tart. Acidic coffee and fruity dark chocolate. Hints of caramel.

Rather light in body for a stout., call it medium plus. Above average carbonation, yet creamy in feel. Light warmth.

A very good brew. The carbonation is on the high side, and the body on the low, but I liked it. It made for an easy drinking beer.
