This could be one of my new all time favorites. Pours a nice deep black with a tan head, settled fast, and looked a little oily. Nice subtle chocolate smell with some roasted barley. This is the stout worth looking for. Blows away the other American brewed stouts. Very balanced, some hops, the chocolate taste is perfect. Not to bitter, very smooth and enjoyable. Unbelivable taste ! Cool bottle too. Won too many medals to list here. Go get a bottle now.

22oz bottle. Pours an excellent black with a medium roasted brown head; absolutely creamy and head maintains shape for a while.

First sip - excellent, very sweet and coffee/chocolate notes strong with no sign of alcohol.

Half-way through - flavor is still strong, with a consistent aroma and taste. The creamy flavor lingers far after each sip.

End - strong finish, no hop flavor for me at the end, which is what I prefer overall in the sweeter stouts.

Very easy to drink, light in alcohol, high in taste of coffee and cream and a noticable pour and aroma right after you open it.

Enjoy this one, it is excellent.

Cheers.

Pours black with a gigantic tan head, one of the biggest I have ever seen. Heavy roasted malt aroma with a huge roast, coffee and chocolate taste. A solid roasted aftertaste rolls around on the tongue long after you have quaffed it all Excellent stout.

The beer as it dispenses from the 22 ounce brown bottle is as dark as a starless night, the head statuesque, creamy and a pleasing light chocolate color with the lace a thick and clinging sheet. Nose that of roasted grain, chocolate and coffee that are sweet and pleasing to the senses with the start thick and sweet and the top chewy and rich. Finish is benignly acidic, the hops pleasant in their spiciness, quite dry after taste that lingers long on the plate, a fine beer from a fine brewery.

What a GORGEOUS beer! Incredibly dark brown head, near pitch black color, and smells just right.

This baby drinks like a champ - right up there with Deschutes Obsidian Stout in terms of downright deadly drinkability for an American Stout. And at 7%, this one creeps up on you out of the bomber.

A beer to seek out and a stout-lovers session brew!

22oz. bottle.

Excellent! A wonderful body of flavors.

Pours a dense dark brown. A decent copper head that dissipates quickly with little lacing. The scents are burnt smokey malts. A caramel sweetness and a sweet rum alcohol scent beckons the olfactory senses. A very enjoyable scented stout.

There is a very nice chocolate flavor with some toffee to start. We then get a burnt coffee ground flavor for some bite. Some dark fruit, like figs round us out and then there is a nice rum alcohol flavor that peaks through in the end. As the stout settles there is some nice wood flavors about here and there as well. This is a well crafted stout. A nice flavor parade.

This stout is not as thick as many others. It is creamy and decadent feeling in the mouth. The alcohol teases the taste buds with a tiny singe. It drinks impeccably well. If you love stouts and have not tried this one yet you are missing out.

Poured so dark, you might think it was black. But, it poured a thick and very dark brown, with a brown foam that disapated in a short time and very little lace. The smell of roasted malts and coffee was outstanding and the taste was of roasted malts, coffee and a hint of chocolate. The sweetness or bitterness in this beer is not overpowering, but a well balanced and complex stout that is pleasant to drink.

I have a soft spot for big, dark stouts. This stout could be bigger, but it's definitely dark and delicious.

The beer is extremely dark, a black-brown that swallows light. The nose is full of chocolate and roasted malt. There's a bit too much sweetness with some honey coming through. It's not really a bad thing, but there are other stouts with more complex smells.

The taste is even better than the smell. It's similarly big on chocolate and roasted malt. There is great balance from some bitter notes. It's a great stout flavor. The smoothness of the mouthfeel well complements the flavor of the beer. This smoothness makes it extremely drinkable for me, particularly for a stout.

Pours an opaque black with a thick foamy mocha colored head. Awesome sticky lacing in my glass.

Aroma of black coffee, roasted caramel and chocolate malts. Kind of a slight hint of fruits underneath the tosated aroma.

Full bodied and smooth. A great roasted malt flavor, Very chocolatey with a nice dry smokey black coffee finish.

Smooth, blanced, drinkable, delicious! Like a piece of rich chocolate cake Great Stout.

Chees!

Courtesy of my wife for lugging this back from San Fran. Pleasant aroma offers vanilla, chocolate, dark roasted malt and mild chocolate in a excellent concentration and progression. Body is flat black and holds a creamy, thumb thick, mocha head that diminishes slowly leaving tree ring like lacing. First sip is creamy and holds a vanilla twinged flavor that gives way to coffee and bitter roasted notes. Finish is quite bitter and balances the sweet middle flavors of the beer well. Tasty. Get yourself a bottle!

Pours deep dark flat black color with a nice light tan colored head.

Aromas are of dark chocolates, toasted nuts, and creamy espresso coffee. This really has a very nice nose.

Taste is of dark roasted malts, creamy dark chocolate with hints of coffee. Finish has a hint of brown sugar, and a slightly mineral hop bite that cuts the sweetness of the malt flavors very well.

Mouthfeel is pretty good. Quite smooth with nice carbonation but it comes off a little thin in parts.

Drinkability is good, wow, I am impressed this is a top notch stout, one of the best I have had in some time.

this is a really solid stout. it obviously suffers on the shelf given the varied reviews here. it may not always be TIME, it can be handling as well. drink this beer fresh!

pours a nice jet black with a thin tan head that fades pretty quick. good smokey roasted malts in the nose -- slight hint of hops. good fresh aroma.

the taste reveals the chocolate spicy texture lurking at the center of the brew. slightly bitter, tad biscuity -- the mix of roasted malt, fresh hop bitterness, and dark chocolate is very satisfying.

DARK CHOCOLATE -- not too sweet, 80% dark chocolate.

on CASK this could be EPIC.

Pours a deep, black with amber tones around the edges.
Tan head is GIGANTIC....it does eventually melt to a respectable ring of tan lacing, but doesn't seem to stick to the glass.
Aroma is cold coffee, malted unsweetened chocolate, and a faint whiff of hops. As it warms a little black licorice comes to the nose as well.
Taste is very balanced but hard to find due to the extraordinary amount of carbonation. Mouthfeel is TOO big. As the beer finally settles, tastes of roasted toasted malts, malted chocolate, and faint coffee barely fight their way through the carbonation to the tongue. A slight hop dryness and bite follows. After it settles and warms, the mouthfeel subsides a bit but never becomes in the least bit watery. Mouthfeel is incredibly full and creamy. This is definitely not a dry Irish stout, nor is it a sweet and strong American Stout...English stout, possibly.
Let this one warm almost to room temp...and let it take the time to settle. You will be pleasantly impressed with the results.

Pours a finger of tan head on a black body.
The aroma is rich roasted malt, toast, burnt wood and milk chocolate.
The taste is rich malt with good balance, a touch of pine and coffee bitterness.
The texture is silky smooth and light. Wonderful.
An exceptional brew.

This beer pours a very dark brown. The head is tan and creamy. It has pretty good retention. It leaves a thin lacing on the glass. It smells like roasted malts. It also smells like coffee. It had a slightly nutty aroma to it. It tastes coffee like. Also sweet malt flavor is very strong. The hops are present, but quite subtle. This is a pretty good tasting stout. It is full bodied with just the right amount of carbonation. It leaves a slightly sweet aftertaste. This beer is a good session beer because the alsohol content in to too high, and the flavor is not that aggressive. I would drink this beer again if I had the chance.

Got this one as an extra in a recent trade and could not wait to give it a try. Served chilled and poured into a pint glass, this one was consumed on 02/24/2009.

The pour was very good. Deep dark brown in color, essentially black with no light shining through on this one at all. This was one damn big looking beer. As it settles a two inch head of tan rose up and then settled back down into a thin half in layer that stayed forever dropping lots of lace down the sides. Lots of chocolate and coffee in the aroma here. Rich with hints of molasses and burnt caramel, really big aroma here. The flavor was full, rich taste of roasted malts and hints of cocoa and coffee, nice sweetness and a dry finish here with almost all the alcohol completely hidden. Nice feel, rich with a full body and a nice subtle finish to it. I was really impressed with this one, as close to a sessionable big stout as you are going to get. This is a must seek out.
