Perhaps the most pleasantly surprising beer I've ever had. In the past I've had shandys disliked them all. I love grapefruit, and grapefruit hops notes, but the few grapefruit juice infused beers I've had have been terrible. Here, the light, almost airy beer married very well with the grapefruit. Exceptionally hazy, like a super-yeasty hefeweizen. Clean grapefruit juice aroma. Moderately sweet, balanced nicely by the grapefruit bitterness and slight acidity. A nice example of a low alcohol German quaffer - it cries out for a hot, lazy day.

From BeerAdvocate magazine Issue #66 (July 2012):

LOOK: Fizzy head, hazy yellow straw

SMELL: Fresh grapefruit juice, zest, faint graininess, soda, clean

TASTE: Crisp, slick, lighter body, tart, grapefruit zest, juicy, sweet, hint of alcohol, cereal, faint bitterness, almonds; tart, dry finish

Imagine working outside on a blistering hot day ... you want something that is going to quench your thirst, but also something sweet, not so alcoholic and still beer-ish. It’s as simple as cutting a beer with soda. Stiegl opted for grapefruit rather than the traditional lemon here. Surprised this style has not caught on in the US yet—good drinking for what it is.

A- Love the design of the can...very lively looking! The beer itself is pale yellow in color....think lemonade, but more hazy than normal! The head is white, and starts about one finger thick but it quickly dissipates into a ring around the glass...to be expected with this style I suppose. The lacing is actually quite impressive with many small patches of foam that sticks to the glass...carbonation is normal in appearance!

S- Heavy grapefruit, orange and really a medley of any given citrus...due to the 50% fruit juice in the mix...perhaps like a pamplemousse soda....slightly sugary but nothing to be offended about....slightly beer like and of juice!

T- Heavy grapefruit and orange zest flavors! Much like a spritzer and/or pop....nothing much more to say here....super fruity...perhaps sweetened up a bit but nice balance between sweet and tart.

M/O- Light and crisp on the palate and plenty of champagne like carbonation! Very highly drinkable and a perfect hot summer refresher.....I haven't had a lot of Radlers to date but this one is super enjoyable and I can see myself on the beach with this...and getting a tan too of course! Recommended!

Poured from the can into a nonic pint glass.

Pale and opaque straw lemon body. A sudsy and snapping white head, not too bright in color, at about a solid three fingers. Dissolves somewhat quickly to a soap like thinned collar and minimal puck. Aside from the head this could pass for a nearly turbid IPA.

Smells like grapefruit juice in the supermarket. Light, a little bitter oil, and very sticky smelling with some decent sweetness. Not much beer sense but also keeps the soda quality on the nose to a minimum.

On the palate. Well, you just can't fault this for what it is. Soda wet but also thick enough to just be a little larger. Tangy grapefruit, light sugars and a nice zip without the gaseous carbonation. Light pops of grapefruit and zest, sugar sweet as if dusted right on the fruit. Not much beer character but there isn't really supposed to be.

Tastes like fruit juice made better, and stays away from sugary soda qualities. A real simple refresher.

I believe this to be a radler to compare all other radlers to.

Appearance - cloudy light coloured with a citrus juice consistency.

Smell - After pouring into a glass you get a distinct citrusy scent with a light fruity undertone from the light ale base.

Taste - The first sip is a citrus assault on your senses with a very well balanced relationship between the grapefruit and light ale. The second sip is smoother on the palate with a clean grapefruit flavour going down with a light ale taste left behind.

Mouthfeel - Heavy carbonation counters some of the bitterness of the grapefruit and provides a crisp finish with every sip without any lasting residue in your mouth.

Overall - This Radler is a go-to for this style. It's 2.5abv is perfect for someone enjoying a day in the outdoors without the elevated risk of impairment and dehydration. I find that one radler usually leads to a few more over the day as they seem to go well lunches and dinners. Perfectly paired with a watermelon salad, salmon dinner, or just burgers on the bbq. Cheers!

Look, its a radler, its supposed to be a 50:50 beer to sparkling fruit juice ratio. Similar to a shandy, but of German origin. So no, it doesn't taste like a beer, its not supposed to. That being said, this is a very tasty refreshing and crisp radler. Great example of the style and after a long bike ride its amazing. Try it for what it is and you won't be disappointed.

Pours a hazy yellow/gold colour. Smells like fresh grapefruit zest. Tastes sweet, juicy, squishy, fresh grapefruit zest, white grapefruit, pink grapefruit, and a slight malt underbody, with a clean/dry finish

I enjoy this beer, but as a kid I admit to being a squirt and donald duck grapefruit fan. I do not consider this even beer. It is a radler. Look- very very light beer with a a high level of carbonation like a soda. Smell- skunky grapefruit which the two brands I listed above being in that flavor classification. Taste- light carbonated grapefruit pop with the the ultra lite beer essence to it. Feel- like drinking a cola or sparkling beverage that is a grapefruit soda with some beer nod. Enjoyed from a 16 oz can and overall very good for a hot day fruit radler. Not a true beer at all.

Stiegl Grapefruit

Enjoyed on tap at the Von Rothenburg Bier Stube. Served chilled in a Spaten 1.0 liter stein.

A) Super cloudy yellow brew. Came out with a finger of head, which quickly dissipated to nothing.

S) The aroma is big time sugared grapefruit. Like dried out candied grapefruit. Quite sweet, but very enjoyable.

T) Follows the nose... Although the finish brings out the citric bitterness and a bit of acidity. Wow... Grapefruit and beer is a good combo.

M) Solid medium bodied brew. I expected it to be lighter. Moderately carbonated. Good amount of citrus zest on the palate. Quite refreshing...

O) Shit.... If you love grapefruit, order this and enjoy. It's quite a tasty treat, and at 2.50 ABV, you can drink a boatload.

12 oz. bottle poured into a Burley Oak snifter

A: Pale straw color that is hazy and cloudy.

S: Fruity and tart, smells like a freshly squeezed grapefruit where when you squeeze the pith there is a slight aerosol spray.

T: Nice balance here that is just slightly tipped in favor of a grapefruit tartness. The beer base here is a bit more present, and the fruit here is definitely more of the labeled fruit soda than fruit juice. This is present in the carbonation and lighter flavor of the fruit, compared to those that use straight juice since that is unadulterated unlike fruit sodas.

M: Carbonated with bubbles that aren't very rough, just odd clumsy bubbles that move along the palate.

O: This is excellent and I was surprised to find a six-pack of this. I've been wanting to try this for a while, but even more so after having Sixpoint's RAD.

Bottle poured into a glass

Opaque light yellow pours a frothy white head.

Aroma is. ... grapefruit ! Hint of floral.

Taste is like a grapefruit / lemonade. Refreshing but sweet - tart.

Nice , light mouthfeel. Very drinkable.

After spending countless hours in Bavarian beer gardens in the summer drinking Radlers and Russ'ns, this brings me back. If you are looking for a "real beer " taste, then this is now what you want. If , you want a summer Radler, then this is a fine example and definitely repeatable for the style. Very referencing and low alcohol. I will purchase more as this plus Schofferhofer's grapefruit hefewiesse and Sam Adams Porch Rocker have all become summer staples in my beer fridge.
