I had this on tap at the Steelhead brewery in Irvine. (And for whatever it is worth, they spelled McFadden's with an 'e,' not an 'i,' as it is spelled here.) I've had a few of Steelhead's stouts and I think this is the best. The mouthfeel is creamy and true to style (even if not quite as thick as other oatmeal stouts) with a dry finish. The flavor is nice and deeply roasted--maybe just slightly smokey--without being quite burnt. I suspect that the ABV is on the low end; I had two pints and could have continued drinking this indefinitely, so I rate it high w/r.t. drinkability. As good a beer as I have had from Steelhead.

11/08/04- Sampled at the Steelhead Brewery in Burlingame, CA
Appearance- One inch head and nice lacing. Medium black pour.
Smell- Grassy oats and a chocolate scent.
Taste- Roasted coffee, and dark chocolate.
Mouthfeel- Near perfect carbonation for a stout. Very creamy and smooth.
Drinkability- Nice stout. Need to revisit Samuel Smith's to compare against.
