I would rate that beer as being UTTERLY SUPERB!!

Great smooth taste, though czech lager lovers might not appreciate it since there is zero bitterness in the taste.

As for me a beer of pure perfection!

Presentation: 12 oz slender brown Euro style bottle, no freshness date.

Appearance: Bright straw colour with a two fingered white lace that holds strong, lace sticks all over the glass.

Smell: Hay-like grainy aroma with hints of grape skin and husk, quick run of herbal hop also.

Taste: Smooth moderate body with a crisp medium carbonation. Grassy malt flavours throughout, dry from the get go with lots of character from the malt. Flavours run from grain and husk to suggestions of grape skin and grass. Hops are bitter to the point of not getting in the way, still very noticeable by adding to the poignant dry finish.

Notes: Delicate without being complex, flavourful without being complicated. Clean and crisp with an unsurpassing drinkability.

Had in Munchen on a few occasions from July 25-27. A fine example of a Munich Helles lager coming from one of the traditional Munchen breweries. A lovely flavor which begs for another sip even right after you just finished one. Sweet biscuit malts and a dash of lemon. Finishes neutral on the palate and has a kiss of herbal hops. Easy to drink a few of these chubby 0.5L bottles.

Far and away my favorite helles. Always enjoy a couple of liters in Munich and the honeymoon visit was no exception. Perfect blend of that beautiful biscuity malt and the crisp clean hops, this is what a lager should be.

Very good lacing. Typical golden straw colour. Good carbination.

Strong aroma of herbal hops, mint and honey.

Excellent taste. Deliacate yet flavourful. Minty herbal hop tastes with sweet honey malt. Mineral notes. I also felt it tasted a little of lemon sherbert. Just a touch sweeter than a pilsener but otherwise very similar to that syle.

Nice moderately carbonated mineral water-esque mouthfeel.

Overall, a very good example of the Munich Helles lager style. If you've not been bothering to buy lagers, as they tend to be dull, this could be one to ignite or re-ignite your taste for them. Up there with craft ales in terms of quality and (understated/subtle) complexity.

Recommened 91/100

500 ml bottle into lager glass, best before 5/2017. Pours crystal clean pale golden yellow color with a small dense white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of cracker, biscuit, white bread, light honey, herbal, light pepper, and floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance of pale malt and light-moderate earthy hop notes; with good strength. Taste of cracker, biscuit, white bread, light honey, herbal, light pepper, and floral/grassy earthiness. Light herbal/spicy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of cracker, biscuit, light honey, herbal, light pepper, and floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Great robustness and balance of pale malt and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-moderate dryness, lightly increasing through the glass. Very clean on lager flavors; touch of sulfur, but minimal fruity/yeasty notes present. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately crisp, bready/grainy, and slightly sticky mouthfeel that is awesome. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 5.2%. Overall this is an outstanding Munich helles! All around great robustness and balance of pale malt and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; very smooth, crisp, clean, and refreshing to drink. Very flavorful and well balanced for the ABV, and not too dry. A highly enjoyable offering, and fantastic style example.

Bought a 50cl bottle at the Munich train station for the equivalent of $1.95
Pours a clear goldenrod with tiny bubbles forming a foamy head. Aroma of hay, rising bread dough and a bit of freshly cracked white pepper. Tastes of honey, tea biscuits and lemon balm. No detectable hops. Light and crisp mouthfeel. Very thirst quenching and refreshing.
Augustiner-Keller beer garden is about a 12 minute walk from the train station for those interested.

Augustiner is the best in Munich. The locals know it. I enjoy the other 5, don't get me wrong, but they are the best of the big 6. This is Munich Helles style at its best.

Lager perfection. I've had it both bottled (UK) and draught in Munich. You could waste a month of sunny afternoons with it. So clean, so crisp. My best beer discovery this year.

Served from 500ml bottle into straight mug. This is one of my favourite biers, can't understand why I haven't done a review before.

L) Golden, clear, dense fluffy white head. Lots of bubbles.

S) Sweet hint of malt and sourness from hallertau hops.

T) At the very first, you think it is too sweet, but that is very quickly overtaken by the classic bready malt and subtle hop bitterness. Very well balanced, everything works together.

F) Light, fizzy and refreshing. No aftertastes.

O) One of the best Helles, and widely available at reasonable prices.

Brilliant in the glass with a nice head, this lager has a soft, sweet, maltiness in the nose and finishes clean with with just enough hops to round it out. To my tastes, less carbonation would be appreciated.

Reviewed in Roger Protz' " 300 Beers To Try Before You Die!"
MJ's 1999 "Guide" gave it 2.5 stars of 4 and noted that the beer had become thinner.
Also listed in the "1001". Of the 8 beers that I've rated in the Hell category, this is one of the better ones. So, it probably deserves to be on the list.

Crystal clear, very pale gold colour. Beautifully balanced lager. Medium to low bitterness and wonderful grainy taste. Will seek this out preferentially in Germany.

Poured into lager glass.
Pours clear yellow, thick and nice white head, excellent retention.
Smell - grain, dough, hay, slightly metallic/oxidized.
Taste - clean malty, slightly metallic, pleasant hops.
Crisp and light, helles as it has to be.

A - Classic golden, indistinguishable from any other lager with a quickly disappearing foamy head
S - Bread malt and grassy hop
T - Well balanced, fits the style and the smell
M - Smooth
O - A good Bavarian helles, this is a good choice to discover the style!

Pours a pale golden color with a huge, fluffy head.

Smells of funky hay, wheat and a whiff of toffee on top of a light herbal peak, which develops a floral appearance.

Drinks fairly light, soft with a nice effervescence during the finish.

Tastes of straw, wet grass, toffee and a whiff of caramel. Turns a little more aqueous and crackery during mid palate, with just a faint note of hops cutting through. Finishes floral, malty with a light herb impact.

This is better than it sounds, due to its perfect balance. The hops are borderline subdued, but still manage to make a difference.

The perfect Munich Helles Lager. To bad can't find it in the states. But always a treat when visiting Germany.

Beer, beer, beer,

Straw-colored appearance and very, very clear. Big, big foamy head. White, creamy, and very long lasting. Clings to the glass nicely.

Smell is faint. Light beer-y aromas with just a smidgen of noticeable hops.

The first thing I notice about the taste is light amount of carbonation. And the second thing I notice is the beer-y aftertaste. It's clean. It's crisp. And there's really not much else to say about it. Very, very slight hop presence.

Overall, though, this is great easy-drinking beer. It's a prefect way to start your day: a liter of helles at the Augustiner Keller, just down the road from the Munich train station, on a beautiful, sunny summer morning.

Bought in Munich. Pours clear, gold in color with one third inch head. Taste is cereal and grain. Light bodied, sweet, moderate carbonation. Really good clean lager. Awesome after a hot day. Could have several.
