500 ml bottle, from Seven Cellars. ABV is 5.2%. The crowncap had leaked a little during shipping, but most of the content and carbonation was intact. Crystal clear and very pale yellow colour, large white head. Nice sweetish aroma of malts and floral hops. Floral and herbal hops in the flavour, on a background of medium sweet malts. Low bitterness.

Having lived in berlin for a bit more than 2 years, I have tried most of the beers sold here, pilsner, helles, weissbier, etc.. Comparing with the other helles, I would say it is good.. the biggest flavor i can extract is bitterness. It doesnt feel refreshening between 5 and 10C for instance. It doesnt have the same flavor than a weissbier, nor the lightness of a pilsner.. My biggest grudge is against the style of the beer. But feel free to try it..

Look: clear golden color with a medium white head

Smell: hops and grass, very clean smell

Taste: nice crisp flavor, a little bit of hops, a little bit of malt

Feel: smooth with lit bubbles

An exemplary helles, though I generally prefer darker and stronger German beers

500ml bottle.
L: Clear, gold colour with streams of bubbles. The long-lasting, foaming, white head leaves many arcs of lacing.
S: Faint grain. Very clean.
T: Fresh, herbal, semi-sweet.
F: Medium body, light carbonation, oily mouthfeel, dry finish.
O: On-the-money helles. Incredibly smooth and easy drinking. A whole world away from the cheap, industrial lagers poured in UK pubs.

Two finger head, translucent light, light hay colour body, about the lightest colour on the scale. Smells of herbs, grass Taste follows the colour in that it is very light and well balanced a malty opening and subtle hop bittering, taste of flour, and lemonade. No off tastes. Goes down like a bomb.

Nothing better than this to relax on a hot day or after physical exertion.

L4.25 Classic pilsner colour, good head, well retained.
S3.5 Standard
T4 pretty routine lager (not seeing much difference v pilsner), but a bit more flavour than normal. Maybe it's the epic bottle illiciting some nostalga, but I am back in munich when I drink this.
F3.75 Good carbonation, I would like a bit more body even from a pilsner.
O4 Not hugely different from most other lagers, but nice that they are still an independent brewery and if you are going to drink a pilsner, at least go for one with some authenticity.

Look: It is of golden colour, looks, when you pour it into the glass, a bit foamy. Some fizzyness can be seen.
Smell: Smells like fresh cut grass.
Taste: At first, there is a little bit of fruitiness as well as sweetness. Afterwards, you can taste the malt- though in this case it is very clear and crisp. You can taste the hops, but very subtle.
Feel: A very smooth beer, which feels very pleasant in the mouth.
Overall: A very good Helles, having a very unique taste. If you look for the "typical" German Helles, you are not wrong trying this one.

Pours a pale golden coloration with a medium, fluffy head and visible carbonation. Smells of doughy, slightly grainy malt and floral, grassy hops, with just a hint of hay. Taste is a great balance of doughy, grainy malt and floral, grassy hops, with lighter herbal accents and just a hint of hay and citrus. Finishes quite crisp and dry, with a medium bitterness and some grainy malt and floral, grassy hops lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a light/medium body and medium/strong carbonation.

Quite a nice Helles that's quite crisp and clean, with a great balance of doughy, grainy malt and floral, grassy hops, sweetness and bitterness, while even managing a decent complexity for the style, with some herbal accents and hints of citrus and hay. It's certainly supremely drinkable and refreshing, but also feels a bit light-bodied and bland for my personal taste, to be honest. While it's certainly a great example of the style, I'll have a great example of a hoppy Pale Ale over this for a refreshing session brew any day of the week.

This is simply the benchmark for a Bavarian Helles. They make their own malt in a traditional way, and that seem to make a difference. Close your eyes, take a decent sip and enjoy Munich beer.

Inexplicably I never got around to rating this beer here; despite living in Berlin for three years whilst following this site, and this being one of my favourite German beers. There is just something so nuanced in esp. it's Taste that really wows me. Nuanced/subtle enough that if I drunk it during the extreme Berlin pollen/allergy season, and hence had congestion, I'd miss it. I'd also suggest trying it on a completely fresh palate, the beauty here is subtlety, the polar opposite of contemporary blunt-weapon hipster hop-hammers.
To highlight the regionality of German beers this one isn't that easy to find in Berlin. There was one shop (major liquor store) out of about six such shops and supermarkets in Berlin within walking distance where I could find it. Compare vs down in Bavaria (Munich/Dussledorf etc) where this is sold seemingly everywhere incl train station F+B kiosks.
In London/UK the only place I've seen and bought it is Wholefoods on Kensington High Street W8 - expect to pay big-$ for anything there though, versus the circa Euro1.20 it costs in Germany.

A fresh Augustiner Helles out of the wooden keg in a sunny day in the Hirschgarten. That’s hard to top!

Augustiner is the most beloved beer amongst the locals. If you’ve only had it in the bottle after its long arduous journey across the Atlantic, you have only have the smallest hint of experiencing it in its native environs.

The “Helles” is about balance. A light colored beer, with a hint of bittering hops. Coming in just over 5%, This is the quintessential “session beer,” and the bavarians often enjoy it the whole day long.

Augustiner is hard to find outside Bavaria and spends almost nothing on advertising. 51% of the shares are held in foundation, so the brewery can never be sold. It’s Bavarian Beer, made by Bavarians for Bavarians. Prost!

near perfect example of the style here, and honestly a beer that is one of the best you can get, especially for the price, amazing that this is as affordable as it is, i wish this one came around the states a little more. its got great clarity, a classic german pils type malt nose, crackery, dusty, earthy, dry, cerealy, simple. the lager yeast is familiar too, but seems more mature here, like the beer had a longer conditioning process than is standard, and it really brightens the beer up, and keeps only the essence of the yeast character in the aroma, noble hops back it up well, subtle there. the flavor is all of this, really balanced between the elements, but its as much about the process here as it is about any specific flavor nuance, like the patience and timeless ingredients this is made with, its so perfect, just so well refined, so crisp, with distinctive herbal bitterness to finish, and just wonderful carbonation and life to it. i wouldnt change a thing about it, and think it stands as a model for others to follow in the style. it really doesnt get any better than this as far as german lager is concerned!

Had this at one of the brewpubs in Munich and it entirely changed my view of German beer. As a classic IPA and stout person, I didn't expect a lot from German beer. This one showed me how truly dumb I was!

Taste: crisp, refreshing, and remarkably complex.
Mouthfeel: light and enjoyable (I could drink liters if this and did).

Smell: A bit light and a bit bitter, still good but the taste far exceeds the smell.

Oh yeah, in Germany you can drink as the passenger in a car and nobody cares if you drink a beer while walking through the grocery store!

My favorite German Hell. I discovered it by accident in the States and have not been able to find it in Central Texas. While traveling in Germany this was my go to lager. I love this beer, it is balanced and has a fresh aroma and delicious finish. If you get the chance to try this you will love it!

Review: 50cl, a nice brown bottle of Augustiner Lagerbier Hell: 5.2% vol

Coming in a lovely brown bottle with that oh so cool label featuring a happy looking monk. Definitely stands out.

This beer is a very good looker. Very clear, a light golden yellow with a lovely frothy white head, and has some good lacing to boot. Its a fantastic looking beer, really inviting to drink! It is very clear to look at, excellent.

Smell is faint, get a whiff of malts.

Initial taste was one of a nice creamy mouthful flavour on the tongue, nice and refreshing.
Some slight tastes of sweet malts.

Taste seems a bit off the more you continue, slight bitter taste, not nice.

As excepted, get a lot on the bottle.
It is ok, but a bit too sour/bitter to be wholly enjoyable.

Slight kick, a little tipsy after it!!! Ha ha. So the alcohol is there just well hidden!

Second bottle
Lagery taste on 2nd bottle. Good initial mouthful.
Ok but the bitter taste is a bit meh, surely a Helles isn’t meant to be this bitter and sweet?.
Caramel body.
Not completely overbearing and not bad, manageable, but a little disappointed all things considering.

Had this on 2018-06-17 and again on 2018-12-04 in Columbia, PA from a 330ml bottle

A - Golden-straw with a 1-finger white head that dropped quickly leaving mild lace.

S - White bread, white grape, grassy and floral hops.

T - Delicious. Everything I like in a Helles. The white grape sweetness is very present over an enticing french bread (minus the crust) malt base. The noble spicing is perfect with honey and floral notes. Bitterness is low but enough to balance the lingering fruit/grain sweetness.

M - Light-medium body and carbonation. Smooth.

O - Top notch; really.

The balance of malt and hops on this beer is simply fantastic. It's easy to drink a lot of because of the low BAC and the great taste. But also not a bad beer for sipping!

Pours a pale golden color with a huge, fluffy head.

Smells of funky hay, wheat and a whiff of toffee on top of a light herbal peak, which develops a floral appearance.

Drinks fairly light, soft with a nice effervescence during the finish.

Tastes of straw, wet grass, toffee and a whiff of caramel. Turns a little more aqueous and crackery during mid palate, with just a faint note of hops cutting through. Finishes floral, malty with a light herb impact.

This is better than it sounds, due to its perfect balance. The hops are borderline subdued, but still manage to make a difference.

While visiting Berlin I drank 22 different German beers in 22 days. I was in beer drinker Nirvana. This was my favorite and one of the few that I ask for over and over. Nice clear pale color that pours with a good head. Effervescent is just right and near perfect German lager. Breadiness and light malts are balanced by just a touch of hop bitterness, A tasty brew!
