Aroma is richly roasty, with a bit of fig and date. No hops, save a light undeterminted herbal aroma. Very strong, with a touch of chocolate and molasses.
Flavor is powerfully malty, with a strong roastiness. A bit of sweet chocolate and molasses, with hints of dates, fig, and green raisin. No apparent alcohol. Viscous, heavy mouthfeel, with mild carbonation. Very smooth drinking for it's strength. Flavors are powerful, yet smooth, round edged, and subtle. Excellent.

A complexly malted lager with a depth of character that's all grain deriven. From molasass to dark fruits to a rich meaty character, this beer puts on a show while never letting this hophead miss the underplayed lupids.
Deep ruby/crimson in color, the masculine glow shows brilliant clarity even hedging on dark brown hues. A formitable froath builds a lightly tanned head the reduces to a dainty lace around the rim, leaving pockets of foam behind. A very handsome looking beer.
Aromas of dates and figs start the malty-rich scent. Low on esters, these fruity aromas are part of the profile of dark malts and mature alcohols. Low on hops, the aroma relies on a depth of malt character, including melanoidins, bready notes, oxidized character of soy sauce, toast/bread crusts, sherry, and subtle chocolate whiffs. Again, very complex and without any hop influence outside of a mild herbal earthiness.
Sweetness starts the beer, but quickly develops into a depth of malt character that pushes the early sweetness into a robust maltiness of toast, deeply caramelized sugars, starches, and protiens, sorghum or molasass, and with the same soft coffee and chocolate character found in nose. The developed malt character leaves impressions of sherry, dates, figs, raisons, soy sauce and something that reminds me of Cracker Jack ballpark candies. Very smooth flavors fly in the face of such strong maltiness but this beer miraculously pulls it off. Zero flaws and ideally balanced.
Rich and robust textures early have a smooth and long fade into a toasty, semi-dry finish that leaves the linger of molasass and cocoa on the mouth, seemingly of cola soft drinks. Smooth warming and just enough hop balance to prevent the beer from cloying, the beer finishes palatable and digestible.
While fitting the moniker of the beer being 'liquid bread' I could see myself as a monk for a month and a half during lent if they fasted- giving up food for this fortifying elixor.

Not much to look at (no head, not very thick looking). Taste is pretty solid though. Nice caramel and malt backing. A very enjoyable beer.

11.2 fl oz. bottle, no bottled on date present. Acquired a single bottle of this stuff from the local bottle shop. My label is different than the beer pictured and reads Augustinerbrau Munchen - "Munchen Bier - Maximator - Since 1328 AD". The bottle also merely lists this as "Dark Beer" and doesn't specify a style.
Poured into a Unibroue Maudite snifter.
A - Pours a deep tawny ruby body, garnet red highlights, with a finger of frothy khaki head that dies down to a ring and leaves slim surface skimming. Minor sticky, residual sugary lacing, but none really sticks. Appears decently carbonated. Looks nice. (Body is actually slightly semi-translucent when held to the light)
S - A fairly simple, but pleasant aroma - notes of smooth creamy caramelized malts / brown sugar, with some subtle notes of dark fruit and fruity hops peaking through on the end.
T - Taste follows the nose: sweetened caramelized brown sugary malts, with subtle notes of indistinct dark fruits poking through. Traditional flavor for the style; it hits all the right marks. Not overly sweet, sticky, artificial, or boozy. A bit minerally in the end, with subtle notes of dry lingering chocolate / nutty / toasty maltiness.
M - The feel is sticky & semi-sweet, with a semi-dry finish, and lingering notes of toasty malts. Medium-full bodied, with low lying carb. Definitely a nice sipper; would make for a good dessert beer.
Overall, a nice authentic representation of the style from Augustinerbräu. I will be on the look out to try more from this Munich brewery.

Got this at The Cracked Kettle in Amsterdam.
From a half-liter bottle into a mug.
APPEARANCE: Pours a one finger medium looking off-white head with good retention. Very little carbonation evident. Somewhere around burgundy or burnt-umber brown in color. Head slowly fades to a thin film. No head sticks around by the end and leaves no lacing down the glass.
SMELL: A big nose jumps out of the bottle and the glass. Caramel malt, toffee notes and a good dose of spiciness. Red fruits are there, raspberries perhaps. Sweet toasted malts all over the place. Very nice and bold. Enticing.
TASTE: Sweet caramel malt, toffee, and toasted malts up front. Biscuit flavours through the middle and some red berry notes too. Finishes with some spicy alcohol notes and goes into a mild but longer lasting sweet malt and spicy alcohol aftertaste. A very sweet and tasty doppelbock for sure.
PALATE: Medium-full body with medium carbonation. Creamy smooth on the palate, heavy as well, lots of weight, goes down smooth and finishes slightly mouth-coating. No bite on the way down. Great feel. Agustiner never disappoints in this category.
OVERALL: A great Doppelbock; one of the best on the market. Augustiner lager beers are phenomenal to say the least, and this is another fine example of their craft. If you like sweet Doppelbocks, this is your baby. A complete malt bomb. Recommended.

This beer poured a very clear deep ruby redish brown with an off white head that did not linger long. When the liquid is swirled, the beer clings to the glass like the oil in the winter time.
A great complex aroma comes from this beer. I can really smell the prunes. Also some cararmel. No hops or off notes.
Very rich malt taste. Very, very sweet from start to finish. Almost too sweet. Prunes again are BIG in the taste. One is quite nice after dinner. I don't think I could drink more than that and enjoy the rest. Almost reminds me of some Belgians I have had.
Medium full body. Very smooth. Not oily, just very nice. Alcohol tingles my gums.
Exceptional beer. I bought it expecting their light lager. What a very pleasant surprise.. I will go get more tomorrow.

Pours a deep mahogany ruby tinged tone with a large tan head that seems to be rather resilient during my session with the 12 oz portion. Lacing is thin and sparse but nonetheless an appetizing brew for sure. Aromatics contain big ripe layers of raisin, green apples, and plums with a touch of sour acidic wild brew action and maybe a smidget of cocoa powder. Flavor is toothache sweet almost like liquified green apples and raisins sits a bit heavy on the tartness and sweetness together. The strange tartness and unique yeast flavors don't really work in the finish. Mouthfeel is medium to fuller bodied and is basically a meal compared to most lagers out there, sweet throughout the session does weigh in a bit cloying with absolutely no balancing act going down. Carbonation is pretty mellow but overall it's tough to stomach, overall drinkability is weak but it's a less alcholic version than Salvator or Celebrator both of those kick this versions ass.

Aroma - malty sweet but with a metallic-affected element as well. The metallic goes away, leaving a malt and slightly sour yeast aroma behind.
Taste - big malty, sweet start. Maybe this should be called Maximaltor? Raisiny sweet like a classic doppelbock. A slight hop touch towards the end, a slight metallic taste also. A subtle roasty aftertaste that only appears when the stronger flavors subside.
Mouthfeel - very heavy, thick and chewy. Low carbonation is proper for the style.
Drinkability - too heavy for many in a row, but tasty and well made enough to have again, certainly.

This was a very nice doppelbock. It was a dark ruby/purple colour with a small and quickly dissipating head of white foam. The aromas were of coffee, plum brandy, port wine, alcohol, deep roasted malts, and slight German hops. The taste was of chocolate, caramel, port wine, alcohol, malts, and hops. The mouthfeel was thick to medium bodied and totally acceptable for this style of beer and the drinkability was great for a doppelbock!

Appearance: Beautiful dark ruby-burnt orange color when observed in the light.
Smell: Honey, Maple Syrup, Dark Fruit.
Taste: Smooth ease into a dark honey, not sweet flavor. Then the fruit flavors come out and spread across the palate for a hint of grapefruit/cherries flavor that turns bitterish towards the finish. Settles well midpalate for a warm aftertaste.
Mouthfeel: Refreshing at first with a long slightly dry finish that causes me to salivate after the beer has been swallowed - needing/wanting another sip.
Drinkablility: A beautiful beer that can be savored and sipped. I wouldn't overdo it with this one/however it does go down fast due to the nature of the mouthfeel and effect on the salivatory glands. Medium to full bodied beer that I would definitely grab up if I saw it in a store. Savor during a cool night on the dock, back porch, or while waiting for something. A delicious Doppelbock.

The flavor is rich. Very malty with a tinge of caramel and hops. A little on the sweet side. The finish is not subtle at all. This beer is a little bit on the English ale side of things. Not a lot of carbonation. Alcohol warming finish. This is a very unique beer but I probably won't buy it again. This is not my favorite taste, not to say that it is not a good beer for the type.
