Earthy, sweet brown malt. Toasted cereal and raisins, dark fruit. Smooth, creamy mouthfeel. Little bit of bitterness on the back end that lingers. Nice carb level.

Not sure if it is style or just this beer but don't think I will purchase again. It poured almost no head at all. Aroma reminds me of an old farmhouse and not in the good way like a Saison. Just not a beer for me but like always I am glad I tried it. Have a great day my friends.

Nice looking brownish red. About half inch of bubbly head that dissipates quickly. Has a little bit of roast nose with some molasses or brown sugar. Sweet, rich just a touch of roast at the end. It's smooth as well. Nice beer. Little sweet but a nice beer.

Blast of tan head tops off a brownish red brew. Vermilion hues. Froth flitters away. Has an aroma of burnt sugar, caramel, brown bread, allspice, faint taffy. Complex and promising. Tastes of caramel, toasted malt, sweet bread and faint notes of prune juice. Medium-plus body with warming but not overwhelming notes of alcohol. A fine, sweet sipper and one of the finer Doppelbocks I've had the pleasure of drinking.

No bottle or import date.

Appearance A very nice looking dark brown body with good clarity. Short eggshell white head and lots of visible carbonation. Unfortunately the head doesn't even last through a few sips. The surface of the beer is glass without a sign of bubbles. No lacing. The beer itself looks amazing aside from the head.

Aroma: There isn't much on the nose. There is a bit of green apple and a lager yeast aroma with a touch of sweet date.

Taste: I get some caramel flavor along with bits of dates and brown sugar. The end is slightly bitter. As the beer warms up a bit the alcohol starts to come through.

Mouthfeel: The mouthfeel on this beer is lovely. It's a nice smooth nearly creamy full bodied beer that sticks slightly on the palate leaving some aftertaste. It's not quite a sipper beer but the full body makes it so you really have to take your time with it. It's great for a Doppelbock.

Overall: The beer has a natural "cool factor" for being a traditional beer and one from a brewery that has been around for so long. It could be worth it to you to try the beer for this purpose alone. The beer was a pretty good Doppelbock but I can easily find better imports and local ones.

nobody likes a dopplebock in the summer, that seems to be a fact of beer drinking life, but take one with a little age on it, and drink it as a night cap on a cool evening, it works. deep ruby to brick red in color, plenty thick, and a rich tan head rises up almost two inches tall in the glass before fading back. it smells like molasses and german red malts, american amber ale notes too with the caramelized sweetness going on in the middle and a decent hops structure on the back end. the booze really stands out in the taste, and its as sweet as honey, hard to drink a lot of a beer thats strong and sweet, but thats how the style usually is. i would have liked more lager yeast character in this, and it could definitely be fermented down a bit more. still i like the layers of grain, perfectly autumnal complexion, earthy and old worldy, which i like, and serviceable as a night cap for sure. not my favorite example of the style, but a rather bold and authentic one. i suspect this might actually be better fresh.
