Pours a clear reddish brown with a small head that dissipates to mostly nothing. Nose is very subdued with a bit of grainy malt and some cola. Taste is mildly malty, reasonably crisp and clean, and lacking much depth. I honestly can't believe this is the same brewery that makes the excellent helles lager. Overall, a pleasant and easy to drink beer without a lot going on.

A very good dunkel weissbier, even better than its weiss sister in my opinion.

This dunkel pours a reddish brown, opaque, color with a medium, foamy, tan head and a somewhat high amount of carbonation. The smell is malty and of caramel. The flavors are heavily malt inspired with caramel and toasted bread taking the lead and a lighter flavor of dark chocolate in there as well. This is slightly hoppier then most dunkels that I’ve had also with a faint piney bitterness in the aftertaste. It has a medium body, but it’s very easy to drink. I could drink quite a few of these. Like I’ve said for many German beers, there is nothing fancy or revolutionary here, but it’s a really solidly done beer that is really pleasant to drink. It is rated 15th in the Munich Dunkel Lager category, which is about right to me. I like the Weltenburger Kloster offering quite a bit more and I think the Ayinger variety is a little better as well, though this is still quite good.

On-draught @ Augustine Braustuben for 2.75 euros/.5L.

~5cm wide head. Foamy frothy white colour. Good consistency. Retention is quite good - ~5+ minutes.

Body is a dark clean Amber.

AROMA: Caramel, bready dark malts, cream. Simple but appealing. No off-notes or booze. Aromatic intensity is average.

TASTE: Matches the aroma. Balanced albeit simple. Pleasant and enjoyable. I think I find some amber malt in the third act. Bready. Toast. Caramelization. Clove.

Some reviewers are noting chocolate; no presence here whatsoever in my opinion.

TEXTURE: Medium-bodied, smooth, wet, overcarbonated. Apt thickness and heft on the palate.
Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, or astringent.

OVERALL: An enjoyable dunkel with good balance. Drinkable and pleasant, but far from incredible. Worth trying at 2.75 euro a pint, but somewhat unremarkable.

High C+ (3.25) / ABOVE AVERAGE

Lots of coffee/dark chocolate bitterness in this brew. Color is dark reddish brown (like cola), with fast disappearing head. Aroma is smoky, wooden, burnt toast. Taste is mellow bitterness and fairly dry, and very smooth. A great dunkel.

On a trip to Munich, to enjoy a good beer in a local original is an experience. Beer, good, very aroma. Although it is not my style too much and a good experience.

Pours a crystal clear, nut-brown colored beer, with a decent, foamy eggshell head.

Smells of toffee malts and whole grain bread, together with a caramel note and a pleasant earthy whiff.

Drinks very smooth, while offering a medium carbonation, which balances the profound malts with a mineralic quality during the ending.

Tastes of soft, rustic whole grain bread, together with a bakers chocolate earth note, from which sweet molasses evolve. Molasses become more intense and dominating, developing a candied caramel character. Finishes earthier, more balanced than during the middle part, while the beer remains it sweet profile in general.

Quite sweet, while not providing a lot of depth, other from its distinct maltiness.
