355ml bottle, from a six-pack that riffs on the Roughriders fans' predilection for wearing watermelons on their heads in support of their team. As an Eskimos fan, I couldn't care less, but more on point...

The beer pours a clear, bright medium golden hue, with one thin finger of fizzy off-white head, which does just that, not sticking around for very long at all, and leaving but a few specks of lace for the dismal effort. It smells of crackery cereal grain, a bit of orchard dry fruitiness, and soft earthy hops. The taste is sharp, biscuity cereal malt, some nondescript tart fruity character, and a yoyo-ing crisp, hoppy edginess. The carbonation is moderate, the body light, but not thin, a bit of sugar weight and latent acidity pressing the issue of actual smoothness. It finishes mostly dry, fairly crisp, and slightly mineralesque.

While not actually harsh, the edginess in this offering would suggest that this a blue-collar, working-man, sports nut kind of beer, despite what mass marketing force feeds us otherwise. Me, I like the challenge put out here - a non-pilsener 'Summer Beer' release, in support of the local sporting concern. At least it distracts me from the bigger challenge of not pointing out the duality in the name 'Melon Head' to those fans of the Green and White who have bought into this concept.

Brewed in Saskatchewan, and with a name and bottle designed for Roughriders fans, this should be an interesting beer.

Poured into a pint glass, it had a medium-pale golden colour, and a foamy white head that settles down to a thin layer over the top of the beer. Pretty average, but not unappealing.

The aroma is mostly sweet grain with some slightly acidic fruit aromas such as pear coming through.

It is smooth and crisp to start, but the malt comes through slightly sweet. The flavour is quite aromatic and perfumy with notes of fresh fruit. Some slight hop flavour and bitterness come through in the finish.

Overall, the flavour is quite layered and complex considering the beer is quite average otherwise. It's a bit too intense for drinking a lot of, but It tastes good nonetheless.

341 ml brown bottle with pry off cap. Sold in 6 packs. Box for the 6 pack is designed so that you can cut part of it off for a squarish looking watermelon head cap. The watermelon helmet is a favourite of fans of the local CFL team, Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Poured in a pilsner glass. Clear, pale gold in colour. White head is 1/8 of an inch on the pour and quick recedes to almost no head at all. No lacing to speak of.

Aroma is mostly sweet and toasty with hints of caramel. Subtle herbal/floral hops.

Light sweetness and a hint of toastiness off the start. Floral/herbal hops in the middle. Finishes a nice collaboration of the two with a little malt sweetness and floral hops. Wet finish lasts a moderate length of time.

Little pin pricks of carbonation. Medium bodied. Pretty smooth.

I wasn't expecting much of this beer given it's packaging. I bought it on a bit of a lark, but I'm pretty happy with it. A really nice beer on the deck on a hot day. Great summer beer.

Bottle my brother brought back from Moose Jaw. Bottled mid-June. The box has instructions on how to turn it into a hat/helmet. Something Roughriders fans would go for.

A - Pours a light gold/straw colour. Good carbonation coming up. Bright. One finger of soapy white head. Some lacing on the sides with a film of retention.

S - Grainy with a little adjunt-like note, even though they specifically note that they DO NOT use corn. Grain, crackers, maybe pear, and sugar with some citrus. More citrus comes through once it opens with a good bready/cracker profile.

T - Grain, crackers, pear. No adjunt-like note this time. A little citrus and sugar again. Once again, citrus comes through a little more, maybe it's the labelling but I can pull out a little watermelon too.

M - Good carbonation with a light to medium body. Very crisp and clean.

O/D - A definate hot weather beer. Good patio stuff perhaps? Not the beer to geek out for, but it has its place and as a Summer beer it could definately work. Sessionable. I wouldn't go out of my way to try it, but it's nice.
