Supposedly the best place in Saskatoon... And we think we're hard off in Ontario.

Atmosphere is small town bar meets faux English pub meets sports bar. Dark lighting, 'English' decor, young and old prairie folk guzzling Blue from bottles, the occasional Guiness. Certainly not a craft beer bar but a bar that happens to have a few craft options.

One tap from local brewers Paddock Wood, some sort of red ale the server explains to me. One or two other passable taps but nothing exciting. A couple import bottles on the list that I would order such as Rochefort or Mc Chouffe.

Service was passable if not a little surly, most of the waitresses looked off the set of Brokeback - small town country girls. Burger was pretty decent, the fries soggy and lukewarm.

My heart tells me there has to be better than this but my head tells me this is likely the best Saskatoon has to offer. Too bad for my stay here...

Edit: Went again. Ordered a number of bottles, most of them not in stock. Finally I had to ask what WAS in stock. Though they did have a new Howe Sound offering on tap which was nice.

This seemed like the place to go for craft beer in Saskatoon just based on sheer numbers and diversity of taps. The old English decor is a bit of a shtick and the handful of British taps seem like window dressing. But if you want to sample a number of breweries from around Saskatchewan this seems like the place to do it. Was able to sample from Rebellion, Paddock Wood, Black Bridge and Nokomis. Skipped the GWB selections since I got the impression it was a little more macro like. Service was efficient and attentive but the beer knowledge lacking.

I met some friends here on my way through. I grew up in Saskatoon but have not been back in a long time.

From the earlier reviews it is obvious that there have been imporovmenets in the selection available. I happened upon IPA night and I took advantage!

Rebellion IPA on tap. Nokomis IPA on tap. Shipwreck IPA on tap.

It's been a couple of years since the last review, so here's an update from a guy who was just passing through. Winston's was recommended to me by Steve Cavan of Paddock Wood fame. Winston's now carries their products. I had a glass of PW's Loki, a high ABV double IPA, and it was wonderful. The decor of Winston's is old English pub - dark wood, leather banquettes, comfy boston chairs instead of rickety armless chairs, subdued lighting, lots of British bric-a-brack, including a red phone booth. The one big room has high dividers to make several sections, and there are also small private side rooms. There are 40 beers on the menu, but being there only the once, I had to make a selection, so I opted for the sampler glasses of Great Western, and the Loki. I can't generalize on the clientel except that on this Friday lunchtime, there were a variety of people from punk-tattoo-ragged jeans, some seniors, some suit and tie men doing a business lunch, and some hipster beautiful people. (I'm one of the seniors). For lunch, I had the bison chili, which was excellent. It came with wonderful bread made on premises. If I ever return to Saskatoon, I will check it out again, but if the place is too noisy or crowded, I will move on. I am generally pleased with my experience there.

This is a downtown bar with a very mixed patron from VLT addicts, down and outers, art types and business people. The look is fake pub. But is is one of my favourite watering holes in Saskatoon. With the largest selection of bottled beer in the province. The draught selection is large by Saskatchewan standards, but is mainly the usual suspects of commercial imports and Canadian beers.

Part of the Hotel Senator.

The staff are great and they make an effort to know something about their beer.

The food is good.
