On cask at the Alchemist.

Served a deep dark blackish color with a small tan creamy head. Mouthfeel is perfection. Very full creamy body goes down oh so smooooth. Tastes good and roasty. A solid porter even more solid when served from a fresh cask. Yeah!

Tasted on 7/18 at The Alchemist

A - Pours a deep espresso with a big mocha head

S - Coffee beans and yeast

T - Smooth with a bitter coffee bite, but really well balanced

M - medium-bodied, some carbonation

D - Like, way too high. This stuff is good.

I'm a sucker for porters and this was just delicious. Really well-balanced and overall very impressive.

From notes...had this one on tap at the Alchemist on 7/3/10

Appearance: Pours a dark brown to black with a small brown tinged khaki crown that shows some retention and little lace.

Smell: Dark roasted malt, hints of espresso, and some bitter dark chocolate.

Taste: Same as nose.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with good carbonation.

Drinkability: Fairly sessionable.

A-Pours a thick brown color. Great brownish/tan head forms then fades down a bit. Does not look transparent whatsoever. I loved the color of the head. Spots of brown lacing dot the glass.

S-Cocoa and coffee. Very roasty, very chocolatey. Exactly how a Porter should smell. I have become a big fan of the style, and this one smells great. I am excited.

T-Ample amounts of cocoa and coffee. So smooth on the tongue. Flavor lasts and lasts. Flavor is also very rich. A bit of hops. Also a bit of nuttiness as well.

M-Perfect. Smooth, creamy. Carbonation is great. The flavor was awesome, but the feel was outstanding. Medium bodied. I could swear it said it was %3.8 ABV, How can a sub %4 ABV beer has this much feel and flavor?

O/D-This was a very pleasant surprise. I loved this. Great porter. Alchemist nailed it again. Would drink this for days if I could access it easily. They make delicious porter too!

a porter with a huge palate dynamic of a wonderful body with hints of bittering, hints of tannins. chocolate and coffee. pour was nice and creamy with a just slightly off white head. but you could tell that it wasn't oil. feels great for still having such a distinct sharp hint of bittering. this is still not that intense as it does actually change with what you're eating. a porter with versatility. simple but yet it has quite a potential to be picked up differently on the tongue.

Had on tap at the Alchemist in Waterbury, VT. Served in a pint glass.

Look: dark brown, pretty much black with a thick, two finger tan head. Excellent retention and excellent lacing. Good looking porter.

Smell: roasted malt, bits of chocolate, some caramel and hints of vanilla.

Taste: cocoa and caramel stand out to me, a bit of earthy hoppiness is in there too, along with a bit of black coffee. Lingering chocolatey finish.

Feel: medium bodied, a bit creamy, moderately carbonated and good for the style.

Drink: could be a sessionable beer.

Overall, a very solid American Porter. There's nothing exceptional about it but it certainly does the style justice and if you're a porter lover, like I am, you won't be disappointed. I would recommend. Cheers!

This is a really nice porter. Very dark and roasted on the nose, lots of head and retention. What struck me was the creamy smoothness and a nice medium body without it having a ridiculous ABV. Some other brewers should take note. Getting the fullness in a porter without ramping up the ABV is on target. The beer has a nice array of dark malts, roasted notes, some chocolates, and no hop profile that I could detect. This was all about the roasted malts. The beer is not particularly sweet, more of a dry porter, but there are some lighter notes to be found. I was very impressed with this porter and came back the next day to purchase a growler, but the restaurant doesn't open until 4 p.m. so I was out of luck.

A - Dark brown with a tan head. Lots of carbonation.

S - Roasted malts, chocolate, vanilla bean. Very nice.

T - Pretty much similar to the aroma with a bit of coffee.

M - The carbonation level actually works pretty well making this very smooth.

D - Awesome porter. I was very impressed with the carbonation level and hop level of all the alchemist brews.

On tap at the brewpub on November 4, 2010.

Pours a very dark brown with a finger and a half of a tan head. Sits around for a bit and leaves behind a pretty good amount of lacing, just like all of their beers seem to; the insane lacing is a recurring theme. Nose brings some roasted malt and a bit of chocolate, but is pretty plain.

The taste adds in more with some chocolate, coffee, roasted malt, and a hint of vanilla. There are certainly a few flavors here, but not all that much depth overall. Medium body with some good roast aspects. A pretty good beer, but didn't quite stand up to many of the rest of their brews.

From 08/28/10 notes. Had on tap at the Alchemist in Vermont.

a - Pours a dark brown with an inch of tan head and light carbonation evident.

s - Smells of roasted malts, chocolate, and vanilla. A quite enjoyable mixture.

t - Tastes similiar to the smell, mostly roasted malts, chocolate, bitter coffee, vanilla.

m - Medium body and moderate carbonation. Smooth.

d - A very nice porter that is easy to drink. I think I would have liked it a little better if the taste was less bitter and was sweeter, but it was still a very good porter, I would order it again next time I'm at the Alchemist.
