Style: Saison / Farmhouse Ale
Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.00%
Availability: Year-round
Notes / Commercial Description:
La Moneuse is named for A. J. Moneuse (b. 1768), a famous local bandit and gang leader, and ancestor of the brewers’ family. It is a classic "saison" beer by virtue of its strength and its earthy, aged quality. It has a hardy, semi-dry malt character, a fresh but not overpowering hoppiness, abundant yeasty, fruity flavors and a fairly strong, but pleasant and enticing mustiness.

Poured into a Gulden Draak tulip. Pours a moderately hazy medium orange amber with a big three finger white head that dissipates slowly to a thick cap; slight foamin on pulling the cork. Classic saison aroma of grainy malt, saison yeast with a little funk, apple and pear juice; earthy. Flavor is grainy malt, saison yeast with a little brett character, apple and pear, dry grass; earthy and peppery. A mild tartness to the finish that the rustic flavors support well. Medium bodied with peppery, sharp carbonation. This is a fine, very traditional tasting farmhouse ale, covering all the apple family fruit, malt and yeast flavors and with a brett style sharpness that fits with the other farmhouse flavors. The active carbonation melds well with the spicy peppery notes. This is a fine saison.

750 into a tulip
Big billowing head, leaves beautiful lacing, hazy straw hue, earthy and musty on the nose, bread
Taste follows the nose, nice long lasting bitterness, refreshing even at 8%, full body, lively carb, no trace of heat - just wonderful peppery saison - worth seeking out!

Dusty bottle, last one on the shelf.
Well carbonated, the bottle opens with a bang and gunsmoke in the air. Explosive foam in the glass, it settles with a loose meringue texture, with trails of large bubbles rising from the beer. Darker amber color, slightly hazy.
Aroma is lightly funky, wet hay, cidery yeast, bready malts. Not quite lambic territory, but nicely rustic.
Taste has a tart crabapple note, funky cider, malty in the middle. Carbonation is a little coarse and peters out quickly.
Medium bodied and tart with a semi dry finish. Overall it's pretty interesting, I tried Blaugies years ago and i'm happy to revisit.

Very balanced brew, doesn't seem like a 8% ABV drink. This is brewed with figs but it's only lightly present in the smell. Apart from that, it's a good mix oh herbal and earthy hops, bready malts, light peppery yeast and some honey. Really good stuff

It has a kind of rustic depth, full of yeasty spice, golden fruits, touches of honey, and well baked bread.
The mouthfeel is smooth yet prickly from the carbonation, that can - if allowed to - create an impressive amount of foam.
The alcohol is never particulary prounced taste wise, and instead supports the feel of carbonated creaminess.
This is lovely stuff. And goes great with just about anything.

750 ml caged and corked bottle, the cap on the caging is smudged but it looks like the printing on it says BL10115. I guess it's a 2015 bottle? Served in a Unibroue tulip, the beer pours a hazy orange/amber color with a couple inch off-white head. Head retention is really good, and there's a decent amount of lacing. I like the aroma, the brew smells like clove, apple, earthiness, wheat/grainy malt and peppery spice. It tastes like yeasty earthiness, wheat/grainy malt, hay, peppery spice, apple, clove, and a bit of apricot. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's somewhat dry with a lot of carbonation. But the carbonation is soft, and I thought it was easy enough to drink. I liked this brew a lot, it's a very enjoyable saison. Definitely recommend this to anyone who likes saisons.

Had all but the Noel from this farmhouse brewery and I have appreciated all.
La Moneuse strikes me as a classic and I am glad to have shared it on three occasions... this last one with you.
The big rocky head tells me that lots went into this and wants to get out.
Aroma bursts out at me. All the earthy, grainy fragrances that I could want in a beer intended to complement an average meal (my ratatouille, frozen.)
The taste is largely the same (possibly with more fruits than I smelled), but finishes dry... which takes a lot of skills when paired with a food whose key ingredient is garlic (which makes me salivate.)
Find it, buy it, share it with others at a meal.
Listed in the "1001 Beers To Taste Before You Die", La Moneuese deserves to be there.
