Occasionally, usually 2 or 3 times a year, I have to leave my nice air-conditioned Office in Los Angeles and head on out to Joplin, Missouri, to check some of the Steam Surface Condensers that I design, as this is where the company that I work for owns and operates a heavy engineering workshop and fabrication facility.

After business is taken care, I normally head out for a beer or ten, but Joplin is most certainly not a beer town that’s for sure. In the last two years, during my (albeit short) visits, I have only really found two establishments that I have visited worthy of return visits for some good beer. As well as the Kitchen Pass (see BeerFly), the only other establishment that I have return visited in Joplin, is here, Club 609.

Unlike the Kitchen Pass which is definitely more of a Bar/Pub, often with live music, the Club 609 is more of a restaurant cum cool place to hang out. As such the atmosphere can be a bit laid back though it livens up at weekend nights I'm told.

Accessed either from the sidewalk, or via an entrance that faces onto a parking lot at the back, Club 609 is a long thin bar. As you enter from the car parking lot via the rear entrance, there is a smallish corridor that leads you down into an opened single room that has a tall ceiling and a very airy feel. The bar is to your left from the back, a black and chrome with several Taps. You can sit at the Bar and drink there, or wait to be seated at one of the many Tables. By the front entrance there is a small raised area that gives a good view of the street outside through the large plate glass frontage.

The Widmer Hefeweizen was good, especially as the last time I was there it was hot & stuffy weather, but the Fat Tire was even better and really hit the spot on my last visit. There were a couple of other micros but the Fat Tire was just too good and I was only there for a few as I was driving back to the Airport after being here. On my last visit it was a hot afternoon, and the ceiling fans were working furiously to rotate the warming air. As such, it is common to sometimes get a frosted mug, especially on my last visit as I was with a couple of red-necks (LOL) that I work with. However, if you ask for a straight unfrosted you will get one, as well as maybe a strange look.

The food is very good here, and it is a great place to either grab a quick Snack, an Appetizer, Burger or a full-blown Entrée. The Seafood is well prepared, but I had the Chicken Oscar whilst last here and it was absolutely superb and is recommended. The fare is of excellent quality throughout whilst having a couple of decent beers instead of one of the many ubiquitous macro beers and/or their Lite versions that seem to infest Joplin’s other Bars, which is a nice change.

Not a great beer bar by any stretch of the imagination, but this is Joplin and you take good quality beer whenever you see it, and Club 609 is one place that has a decent alternate to the usual macro crap.
