Dark brown amber colour (almost black actually) with a decent head of foam that stays very well. Smell of toffee and some roasted malt. The taste has toffee and roasted malt as well, together with licquorice, caramel and dark chocolate. There is also a strong (pilsener?) hop profile in the finish. I didn't note any fruit esters: this is more of a malt-hop-dubbel. It reminds me of some German doppelbocks actually. No complaints here though: a good dubbel, especially for those who like their beers a bit less sweet.

I bought this brune dubbel from Brussel Sprouts the day before yesterday, to go. I like the label; it is this nice lake and a city on the backdrop. I served this dubbel in my Hoegaarden Forbidden
Fruit chalice. This beer pours out dark ruby brown with a thick creamy and durable head quite a looker; it smells grassy yeasty with some floral notes; quite different from many brune beers I have tried. The taste was kind of like the belgian blonds more than a typical brune; it was yeasty
but the yeast taste was not as strong and stinggy like many belgian blonds. Dark malts and very subtle sweetness in addition to a slight breadiness was detected as it moves into a grassy yeasty taste on the finish which is reminiscent of the initial smell; the finish was also very slightly bitter. I did not think I detected much of fruits in the taste but in the after taste I believe I pick up plums and grapes with some breadiness; a little fruity aroma on the nose as well. Beer was of a moderage body with a sufficiently high carbonation level; it was smooth but instead of creamy smooth which was what it looked to be; it was more of the watery smooth. It was a relatively refreshing compared to many of the belgian brunes as well. On the whole, I find that this beer was more like a blond than a brune though every inch of it looks like a brune. Quite interesting though I would have preferred it more like a brune.

poured into westmalle chalice.

A: pours deep red brown with off-white head..
S: malty as well as a bit sweet.
T: certainly a Belgian style ale, malty, as well as sweet. Alcohol content gives a warming sensation
M: creamy
D: fairly drinkable and pleasant

this is a nice smooth brown beer. poured nice into me glass with about two inches of head. steady carbonation and rich smell. the aroma of fruits, roasted malt and yeast. the taste was the same and finished nice and smooth. very nice lacing down the whole way. i am glad i bought four of these and with two left to enjoy i will savor each sip.

good beer. suckem up and movem out.

p.s. i found that this had a best by date of 13 months ago. i am guessing that it was kept in a good place and is likely to be a style of beer that ages well.

On-tap at Naja's Place in Redondo, just a few miles west of the 405,

A: Pours a mild, cloudy brown, with a thick, off-white head, leaving nice lacing in the tulip-shaped Sam Adams Black Lager glass it was served in.

S: Nice smell of malt and sugar, molasses.

T: Very tasty, tastes of rum and brandy, the rum more so, with a thick malt current, backed with dark fruit and prunes. Raisins also play a heavy part. The beer is very yeasty and quite estery, with a slight hint of clove and banana. Figuring out the flavours is hard in this beer, it's got a lot going on.

M: Smooth and thick, rich, creamy, full-bodied, slighty medicinal and phenolic as well, got a light feel of band-aids on a couple sips, but overall, very good.

D: This is a really good beer, very tasty on-tap, surprised me a little bit of how good it was, I'll definitely order this again, a great brown beer.

Live review. Poured from the stubby dark brown 11.2 oz. bottle that I bought, along with the cool thick walled snifter with a very nice gold and blue "Val-Dieu" label on the side of it and two other Val-Dieu beers as a part of a gift set from Reider's Market in Painesville yesterday for $9.99. Since about $3.33 per beer is close to a reasonable price one really gets the cool snifter free. "Best by" date of 07/07/11. Again, as with the Blonde (or is it Blond?), the cap disagrees with the label on the same beer. The cap lists "Brune" but the label announces "Brown" as the name. I realize that both of these words mean the same thing but I thought that it was interesting.

A Light brown creamy head that leaves a nice, curtain type lacing over a really great looking dark brown body that glows a dark dark brown, mahogany in front of direct light. I really like the look of this dubbel, a mature, craft beer appearance created by brewers with a passion for their beer. 5.0

S More of a muted smell than I had expected of some sweet malt and some barley husks and it is devoid of a significant hop presence to me. The smell is just not as strong as I thought that it might be. 3.5

T Medium roast malt and roasted it is. I can taste the roasting in the beer and it strikes me as a beer that is more of an English Brown Ale than a dubbel. Anyway, I really like the taste (whatever the style). 4.0

M Nice and smooth and creamy like some of the best English Brown Ales. Really, the appearance of the head gave me a clue as to what the feel would likely be and the actual feel did not dissapoint. 4.5

D Good indeed. I found the bottom of the Val-Dieu snifter within a few minutes. 4.5

Notes: I was pleasantly surprised by this beer which strikes me as an English Brown Ale but not the dubbel that it has been assigned.

11.2 ounce bottle depicts a painting of the brewery or abbey. Best before date reads 15/02/10. Poured into a Kasteel chalice the beer forms a lovely 2 finger head which holds for several minutes. Dark, dark chocolate brown color with solid carbonation feeding the head. Floaties are abound and in full force. Thick laces paste themselves to the glass throughout the drink. A very attractive beer. Nose is subtle, nothing over powering here but definitely dark roasted malts and some dark fruit make their presence known. Taste is very smooth, alcohol is well hidden and hops are hiding in the background until the finish. Medium bodied, note nearly as thick on the palate as I expected. Was very surprised that the beer was as smooth and mellow as it was . .. looks had me thinking it was going to be strong and warming and this beer tasted more like something I could session; dangerous given the ABV here. Overall, a very enjoyable brew and probably a good one to give a newbie to the belgian beer world.

this brew is aged for about a year:

this brew pours up a solid brown color with a decent off white head. Tons of lacing on my glass and tons of yeast flakes roaming around like a bunch of bums that just got let loose on a money tree farm. i smell a big nutty malt aroma, delicious, some yeast. i taste big malts, nutty flavor, dark red apples, crisp hop background in the finish, no real bitterness though. full bodied, low to medium carbo. a pretty badass beer!

I had this served in a Duval goblet.

A:: Poured a very dark brown, almost black, with a layer of head that turned to lacing on the top after a short time.

S: The smell was sweet. There was a light hint of cinnamon and anise. There was also a slight hint of coffee. It was difficult discerning a smell from the width of the goblet's mouth.

T: Taste was slightly malty. There was a hint of caramel and a very slight note of roasted nuts.

M: The carbonation was a bit on the heavy side. Despite this, the beer still had a light feel to it. It didnt feel like it should be as dark as it is.

D: I found it drinkable, but I didnt find a flavor profile that really begged for more.

Poured into a goblet for a dark brown body with a tan head and some lace patches. An intense malt smell with some roasted, caramel, chocolate and coffee malts along with a little yeast and some dark fruits tucked in there. Great smooth and creaminess in a medium body with caramel, chocolate, toffee, coffee, roasted malts along with figs for a sticky, sweet and dry finish. The malts dominate but there are some fruits like orange and apple pie crust as well for that dryish, bready taste with hints of fruitiness. Overall, a sweet malty double with a plethora of flavors that I am not doing justice; one of the better Belgians I've had and great for after dinner.

Reddish brown in color with a large creamy tan head. Looks a bit like root beer at first, but red hinst show through when held up to the light

Has a nice smell, seems malty with brown sugar, toffee, and caramel.

A but sweet up front, more like a fruity sweetness, mainly cherry. Has a touch of toffee as well, and with the sugar and carbonation, reminds me a lot of drinking a cola drink, but with alcohol warming at the finish.

Feel is a bit watery, and with the carbonation, feels like I am drinking a cola.

How much you like this one depends on your tolerance for sweetness. I didn't find it overly sweet, but those sensitive to sweets may find it a bit much. I think the best comparison would be it is like drinking an alcoholic cherry Coke. Good, and I liked it, but may not be to all tastes.

Poured from a bottle to a goblet. Had a dark brown, opaque appearance. Gave a quarter inch head.

Had a bready smell, with a predominant nuttiness. It gives a pretty strong, yet somewhat sweet aroma.

The nutty quality of this beer comes through the most. Also evident is the yeast and some mild dark fruits. Very tasty.

Had a decent mouthfeel. Not overly carbonated, but still had a nice bite to it.

If you like brown ales this is one of the better examples of this style. It's definitely a drinkable beer.

A: Pours a dark mahogany red with tons of huge chunky floaties lazily floating in the glass.

S: Very soft roasted malt and caramel is evident on the nose, very subtle.

T: It truly is the flavor of this beer that makes it one of the better browns I've ever tasted. There is a slight alcohol detection from the 8% but is very well balanced. The beer slides down the throat nicely from the extremely smooth palate with some rich brown sugar and sweet caramel bread notes highlighting the flavor on the way down. Silky smooth texture, rich caramel and a soft roasted nuttiness makes this a prime example per style

M: The palate is very smooth, silky, and slick on the tongue with a creamy caramel texture and soft roasted malting.

D: great drinkability factor. Very rich and highly recommended.

Poured into a Val-Dieu glass.

A: Pours a deep chestnut brown, with nice clarity for being bottle conditioned. A small yet dense cream cap has very nice retention and leaves patches of lace.

S: Chocolate covered raspberries pretty much sums it up. The chocolate aroma leans toward the dark side with its bittersweet smell. There's a light sourdough note in the background.

T: Lots of chocolate and dark fruit out front. Bittersweet baker's chocolate and raspberries dominate. They're joined by a slight candy sugar sweetness. Bitterness is just enough to balance the sweetness. If dry was a flavor, that would pretty much describe the role of the hops. Gets a touch astringent toward the end before finishing rather clean. The 8% ABV is completely masked.

M: The body is dry and quite light for this much alcohol. But that's pretty much par for the course with many Belgians. The carbonation feels just a touch low.

D: I was through my bottle in a flash. This beer goes down easy and the alcohol is so well hidden that the beer's strength can't be felt until a warm feeling hits at the end of the glass. A very nicely put together beer.

Pours a hazy brownish dark red with one finger thick cream colored head. Settles to a thin ring, with a few thick rings left down the glass. Smell: brown bread, baker's chocolate, cooked red apple with a brown sugar and cinnamon dusting. Taste: upfront it's ripe pear and toasted brown bread with a slight alcohol note, then into powdery unsweet chocolate, red apple skin, cinnamon and (very mild) anise. Mid sip there's some balance from a mild earthy hopping. Medium bodied with fluffy carbonation, juicy towards the end of the sip before a semi-dry, spice accompanied finish. Nice dessert compliment or dessert itself. Cork stamped 10/12.

my first beer review:

Val-Dieu Brown in chimay chalice best before 8/28/08 on bottle.

Appearance: poured with a one-finger off-white head. real dark, looks like coca cola. Head retained well, leaving lacing yet minimal.

Smell: smells roasty and nutty to me, very sweet scents.

Taste: Definite nutty taste, at 8% abv I hardly taste the alcohol in it.

Mouth: smooth and heavy

Drinkability: at 8% it is a slow drink. If i had more i would have a couple, but that would span throughout the night.

I enjoyed this beer

Poured from a stubby, brown 33cl bottle into a snifter Most of the dark, muddy sediment at the bottom of the bottle added in the pour. The beer was still rather clear, dark brown in color, with a small bone-colored head. The head soon died to a top coat but ample and attractive sticky lacing was left clinging to the glass as the level slowly reduced.

Sweet and fruity aroma. Sniffing this is the only way one gets a hint that the ABV is over 4-5% (except for some warming).

The flavor is mildly sweet with a slight bitterness and a touch of sour. There's a load of dark fruit over medium and medium-dark malts with a hints of smoke, wood, and coffee in the finish and aftertaste. Hints of plums, prunes, dried cherries, roasted nuts and fruit cake. Yum (approaches 4.5)

M: Full, creamy smooth feel with fine, soft carbonation.

O: A very satisfying and drinkable brune. The 8% ABV is mostly well hidden.

Poured into a Val-Dieu chalice a dark amber/brown/crimson red color with a small amount of foam that fell into a nice cap and left behind plenty of thick lacing. Aroma of chocolate and dark bready, yeasty notes. Taste is similar to nose. Toasted bread, hints of baker's chocolate, a dry yeasty finish. Semi-sweet, delicious, and goes down quite easily. I'm not generally a big fan of dubbels, but this one was great!

They had lots of stuff hand written about it being a handmade cloister beer, so they're right in that they're an Abbey beer. At 8%, I was concerned for my sobriety, but what the hell. Surprisingly, it had lots of banana flavors and virtually no bitterness, but had a few sour notes, so it was leaning towards an Oud Brun. The alcohol was hidden well in a very caramel-forward beer. 4.
