To all my followers: “I am God”... just kidding! Actually I want to apologise for the recent lengths between my posts, uni work and life in general has been a major obstacle, but now I’m back baby, and with a Gueuze no less! To the uninformed Gueuze is your basic Lambic style beer (aka fermented by wild yeast strains that float around in the air). It is generally a mixture of typical farmhouse Saison characters (apples, hay, musty yeast) with a mouth puckering sour finish. I know, sour beers, what’s up with that? If you haven’t tried one yet you should because they generally kick ass and take names, specifically your name when you drink one.

Poured from a 375ml bottle into a Duvel Tulip.

A: Cloudy and golden body with wild yeast clumps floating around having a yeasty good time. There is a decent enough half centimetre chalky white head on top as well. 8/10.

S: This brew immediately sings out: “We got the funk! We've got the funk, forget the P-Funk, we got the sea funk.” There is quite a lot going on with the aroma, rotting cider apples, hay bales, funky yeast, sour candy and vinegar. 8/10.

T: All over the shop (in a good way!) with notes of cider apples, sour lemon acidic candy, funky yeast, and a long tart finish. Slightly astringent in the aftertaste but nothing too over the top (I’m looking at you Lindemans Kriek Cuvée René!). 8/10.

M: Mid to light bodied with a palate cleansing champagne fizz. 7/10.

D: Sometimes it’s good to have a Gueuze - wow I totally just came up with a slogan for the International Gueuze Drinkers Association (or IGDA for short). It’s a decent and refreshing Gueuze and if Gueuze was one of my favourite styles, which it isn’t, I would definitely have this in ye olde fridge door. If you haven’t tried a sour beer before this is an excellent entry point and you’ll be surprised at how refreshing they can be. 8/10.

Food match: Gueuzes are palate quenching kings, so they will really work with anything, but sharp cheese platters are par excellence cuisine pour cela.

A gueuze that does not have any weaknesses, but does nothing to convince you of being worth of excellence. So very good then, with nice orange, peach, apple, and a ton of classic funk. Finishes earthy and slightly tart. Smell is staight up gueuze funk.

Poured from 12.7 fl oz bottle into glass. Best Before Date on label is '17.03.2035'.
Cloudy, pale gold colored body. I did not separate the sediment from the main beer body, so sediment is in the drinking glass. White and very bubbly head, that is continually reinforced by rising bubbles. No lasting lacing. Cork was pushed out by the bottle carbonation, and slight effort at twisting the cork.
Aroma of lemon and peach/green apple, oak barrel, and vinous like white wine. Strong funk.
Taste is tart lemon/green apple and funk of leather and grass/barn yard, white wine and champagne like. There is a fruity sweetness that mixes in too.
Mouth feel is medium, with a high level of carbonation support. Dry at the finish.
More tart than sour, but both are there, with a slight sweet aspect. This is sweeter than some other of its style, but is more of a variation on the brewing approach rather than a detriment. Quite enjoyable. (I get the rubber tire descriptions in other reviews, but this is really part of the overall appeal of the gueuze aroma, that is really up to the drinker to interpret.)

375ml into a tumbler, best by 19-10-2029

Pours a hazy straw yellow. Big head that dissipates before you're finished pouring into a one finger head. Tiny, effervescent bubbles dance to the top of the beverage. Head sticks around for the duration of the session.

On the nose, we have hay and fruity citrus notes similar to lemon peel. Behind that, there are other musty notes like a damp cellar or dusty canvas with some granny smith apples. The aromatics of this beer are literally jumping out of the glass at me. I left my glass in a room to deal with some things I am cooking, came back and could smell the beer from about 5-6 feet away... pretty impressive.

The taste is much more subtle than what I am used to in some what fresh gueuze. Forward with fruity lemon like citrus flavor, with a musky undercoat of hay, dank cellar and granny smith apple skin. Pretty well put together, but like I said subtle.

The mouthfeel is medium with lively carbonation at first, then spotty carbonation. Crisp on the tongue and refreshingly dry. It seemed like it lost a ton of carbonation in the first 10 or so minutes the beer was in my glass.

Overall, a good gueuze. Great aromatics of lemon and hay, with subtle granny smith apples and dank cellar qualities. The flavor could use a little more complexity and punch but I am not going to hold it against the beer. Pretty good for the availability of this gueuze.

Best before 10-19-2029. Served from bottle into a Drie Fonteinen ‘3 Fountain’ gueuze glass. Poured a hazy golden yellow-orange with a three finger white head that surged out of the top of the glass and eventually subsided to two finger VERY slowly. Maintained nice lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, citrus, lemon zest, lemon rine, sour, and tart. The flavor was of sweet malt, funk, tart, fruit, lemon rine, earth, and sour. It had a light feel on the palate with high carbonation. Overall this was a pretty good brew. I bought this one on simple fact that it was one of the top rated of the style on BA. I figured if I want to call myself a true fan of the style, I need to try as many of these as I can to be able to gauge my review. This one definitely did not disappoint. All of the right flavors and aromas were there with a nice touch of different lemon components to add another layer of complexity to an already solid style. Really well done and I would highly recommend it to anyone who calls themselves a fan of Gueuzes/Geuzes.

this brew pours up a clear golden color with a thin off white head. the nose is wood, tart citric acids, subtle honey notes, light fruits. I taste sour candied fruits, subtle oak, cork, not overly sour. medium bodied, low carbo, very clean finish. Chicks like this! In a good way!

375 ml bottle into tulip glass, best before 4/13/2032. Pours moderately cloudy golden straw color with a 2-3 finger fluffy white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Some nice foamy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big sour apple, pear, lemon, grape, clove, pepper, oak, hay, grass, leather, funk, white vinegar, and earthy yeast spiciness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of estery/funky yeast notes with barrel character. Taste of tart apple, lemon, pear, grape, clove, pepper, oak, hay, grass, leather, light vinegar, and earthy yeast spiciness. Moderate fruity/spicy tartness on the finish; with lingering notes of light fruits, clove, pepper, hay, oak, grass, leather, light vinegar, and earthiness on the finish for a bit. Very nice balance and complexity of fruity/funky ester flavors with moderate barrel character; and zero cloying flavors after the finish. High carbonation and light-medium bodied; with a very crisp, dry, moderately prickly, and slightly acidic mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with hardly any warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice Gueuze. All around nice complexity and balance of flavors; and very smooth to sip on even with high carbonation. A very enjoyable offering.

The cork on the bottle had a small amount of mold / cobweb material on the area around the metal enclosure. Gotta love that on a gueuze!

A- Pours a just slightly hazy straw liquid with a slightly fluffy white head into a tall Belle-Vue Gueuze glass. Heads slowly dissipates over 3 minutes.

S- Lovely smell coming off this one. Subdued Fruit / esters, woody and slightly earthy smell. Maybe a bit damp and musty....
Maybe a very slight hop aroma.

T- Taste is surprisingly simple. Not really sour at all, only every so slightly. Light, slightly bitter. Small amount of the fruity esters. Can taste the wood, not like OAK, but more like chewing on a piece of old wood. Slightly musty / earthy. Not like hardly any lambic I have had.

M - simple mouthfeel. It is subtle, maybe a bit thin, but it does go with the taste since the whole package is light.

D - Since this light it is very drinkable. But the overall taste is not good enough to make we want another.

Overall, interesting in that is is not as strong and sour as most lambics I've had. It is on the opposite side of the spectrum to say a Cantillon. However, it does remind me of a Pitcher of Lambic Doux I had years ago at a cafe in Brussels.

Picked up a 12.7oz corked and caged bottle from Holiday Wine Cellar in Escondido and poured it into a wine glass.

A: Pours a murky golden/straw-like hue with a thin head that sticks around for a while leaving small amounts of lace, with a ton of sediment in the bottom of my glass.

S: Sour apples, white wine, peppery woodiness and a bit of yeast funk.

T: On point with the nose, but is a bit of a letdown for me coming across thin and light in overall flavor. There's some good sour funk in there, but just seems watered down or weak to me.

M: Light-bodied, vigorous carbonation with big bubbles that roll across the palate nicely - overall very smooth and dry finish.

D: Smooth and easy drinker, but the flavor and appearance were off for me.

Presentation: Green 37.5 cl bottle that is corked and caged, a best before date stamped on the back label.

Appearance: Light trickle of sediment with a tarnished gold hue, looks nearly like a glass of champagne.

Smell: Lemony and musty up front, very faint barnyard and yeast aroma. Tart to the nose with lemon peel and fermented cider.

Taste: Enormously tart, light bodied and dry. Crisp with a harassed refreshness. Malts are with in range of the flavour threshold showing some wheat as well as some husky malted barley. Hops are hard to find and the yeast flavour helps you to forget about them. Yeastiness crawls through a musty, earthy and light barn yard flavours. Tartness still prevails in the finish and is hard to shake with some powdery husky grain and a slowly cleansed palate.

Notes: Very drinkable Gueuze with all of the characteristics of the style, this would be a great beer to have will appetizers or between a several course meal. Perhaps pair it with a fresh soft Brie or a well aged cheddar.

This bottle had a drink before date of Mar, 03 2019 ... so this one is a beer that can be cellared for a while. Upright is best IMO.

750ml bottle, best by 6/6/2032, generously bought over by Doug. Poured into a Toppling Goliath snifter today, 1/29/2014.

App- Hazy orange-copper body, crazy 3-finger head with a lot of retention, good lacing.

Smell- Nice subtle funk, good dry acidity with white grapes added onto it. A little bit of oak. Not complex but delicious.

Flavour- White grapes, red grape skins, hint of funk, some wheaty malt backbone. Solid acidity at 4/10. It's very much like a nice complex saison.

Mouthfeel- medium bodied, nothing to complain about, good carbonation, nice sweet wheaty and tart finish. Decently dry.

Overall- Nice shelf geueze at $10 for a 750 off the shelf. It's worth it, and if it was a saison, it would be rated better than it is on here.

Dark pour for the style, nicely hazy, rich white head.

Aroma is crisp and bone dry, with sharp fruit mingling nicely with barnyard must.

Flavor is unexpectedly rich and variegated. Sweet, sharp apple start things off, getting spicy fast enough to prevent the sour nodes from becoming overwhelming. The end and finish are boffo, with sweet tart candy nodes of earth and super sour fruit and then a lingering, quenching dryness.

One of the busiest and yet most straightforward guezes I've ever come across. Definitely worth seeking out.
