Gorgeous appearance, as is typical of Belgian kriek lambics. Dark ruby body with a thick, creamy lavender cap. The aroma is musty funk and cherry. The flavor is a showcase for the cherries, with additional notes of earth, nuts, cherry pit, hay, wet basement. This is a particularly good bottle of this beer. A fairly common bottle as far as lambics are concerned. I should keep this in stock. Recommended.

appearance: Hazy cherry red with a plush pink head. She's a beaut.
smell: tart, funky and sour, and earthy. The nose is potent.
taste: As you would expect from the nose. all this tart, funky, sour notes. A hint of sweetness, mostly dry with a long lingering sour finish.
overall: I don't have a lot of experience with these sours but damn i think i'm gonna soon. Great stuff.

Consumed 5/19/14

Split with Goblinmunkey7

Appearance: Deep purple, with some dark red - remarkably, absurdly, borderline hilariously bright pink head - very large, fluffy, slowly fades to a (still) large head, leaves a little lacing

Smell: Cherry-soaked Band-Aids? - huge, huge amounts of cherries - tart cherry skins and some tart cherry flesh - this isn't just cherry flavored, this smells like cherries in a blender - big phenolic aroma, with a touch of vinegar - lots of wood - sour and funky notes, but the emphasis here is clearly on the cherries

Taste: Sour, tart cherries with some funk and vinegar - touch of acidity, but mostly this is a damp, musty, lactic funk, and for what it is, it's very funky - some yeasty and barnyard flavors - an abundance of cherry flesh and cherry skin - maraschino cherry flavors minus virtually any sweetness - some wood and more woody funk - nicely low level of sweetness, finishes mostly dry

Mouthfeel: Medium body, nicely carbonated, smooth, finishes dry with some funk

Overall: Pink is a beer style

The aroma is potently phenolic at first, but it improves substantially as it warms up. And the taste is consistently good. This isn't the most complex Kriek, but it's definitely interesting, and worth a try.

Thanks to angrybabboon for sharing the bottle.

Appearance: Super deep pink. Dark reds and burgundy as it settles. Head is bubbly and a nice dark pink. Moderate carbonation on the pour. Decent head retention leaves a small cap. Negligible lacing.

Smell: Cherry juice and flesh and more cherry. Slight lactic bite to the whole thing. Underlying funk. So much cherry flesh. Phenolic and medicinal. Band-Aids. Sweet with some underlying funk. Musty and damp. So much cherry. Some ripe cheese. Warming ups the sweetness a touch and lets the tart edges brighten a bit. A bit of pie crust and butter.

Taste: A bit more tart than the nose indicates. Slightly acidic with some tart cherry flesh and juice. Mild tannins with a solid oak backing. Lots of wood. Damp and musty with old stone basement. A hint of cheese. Phenolic, but it works with the tart cherry juice. Medicinal. Cherry flashes up front and then fades quickly. Leaves a lingering citric tartness.

Mouthfeel: Mediumish body. Moderate to light carbonation. A touch dry on the back with a juicy front sip.

Overall: Cherry Band-Aids are good for the soul.

A nice but unexciting "sour." Cherry is prevalent, but so are Band-Aids.

Best Before: 18/04/32

A - Gorgeous, deep burgundy. Resounding pop from the cork. Blocky, frothy, rose head with great longevity.

S - Cherry blended with wood chips. Sour blue-cheese funk. 30/30/40 split between cherry/wood/funk.

T - Very sour cherry, a little bitter oak and woodiness provide the body of flavour. Lambic funk arrives at the end. Promises complexity, on which it definitely delivers. Minimal sweetness. Dust cherry skins.

M - Smooth and creamy. Lightly carbonated. Feels very rustic. Dry

O - Surprised at the depth of flavours this beer offers. For comparison, I greatly preferred this to the (much) more highly rated Fou'Foune I had early this week. Dials up the wood and fruit and dials down the lambic funk. May have to grab a bottle with which to test the best before date. Underrated.

Poured into a white wine glass as that's all that was available

A: Pours burgundy red with a substantial light-pink head and bubbles.

S: Sour cherry, oak and funk.

T: tart cherry, malt, earthy-funk and tannic oak.

M: Light-bodied with champagne quality carbonation.

O: Really good for the money. Clean and crisp kriek; minimally sour with good balance.
