In terms of the atmosphere and menu, this Mellow Mushroom is pretty similar to the other locations I've visited. We went on a Friday night last month, and there was a pretty minimal crowd, which is unlike other locations. Perhaps it is busier during the school year. They had a few decent beers on tap, but I did not think the tap selection was as good as other locations I have visited. There wasn't really anything particularly interesting. We just stayed for one beer and left. Still, if you are in the area and looking for a spot to sit and have a beer or two, or just to have a decent beer with a meal, you could do worse.

It is important to note that the downstairs bar only has four taps, but the upstairs bar has more.

Atmosphere is a college to grown-up pizza shop of the upscale variety.

Quality is high as for the victuals.

Service is fair and dependent on the individual and the goings-on in their daily life, sad i know..

Selection, a bunch of staple beers on tap that I dont care too much for nor are the bottled selections the greatest..They have a beer club where you are rewarded for drinking all beers that they have to offer.

The food is good, this is their product, not the beer, so i would expect it to be good.

Value, a little pricey-to reasonably priced I'd say..

Overall, go check it out, everyone has to eat 3x daily, so what do you have to lose..?

Cheers!

visited 27 Nov 09:

Stopped in for lunch with my fiancee while in town visiting a friend of mine. Interesting interior, good experience even including the pack of obnoxiously loud young women sitting near us. We sat at the bar, and had a calzone and a sausage and pepper sandwich. The food was good, delivered promptly; service was attentive even though the place was fairly crowded, being downtown on Black Friday.

Beer selection wasn't bad: twenty taps and the only mainstream beers on them were Blue Moon and Yuengling. Other beers on tap were Fat Tire, Magic Hat #9, Guinness, Boddington's, Newcastle, Sweetwater 420, and Franziskaner hefeweizen. They also had a list of 75 more beers available in bottles.

All in all, glad we stopped in for lunch there; I had never been to a Mellow Mushroom before and would definitely stop back.

Stopped in last time I was in town. Not at all impressed with the beer selection. I think they only had four drafts including a house brew. Maybe twenty bottles but half of those were what you would find in any bar in America. I usually think of Mellow as a place you can find a wide array of interesting beers, but not this particular location. I can immediatly think of a dozen places in Columbia to go instead of this one. Try flying saucer, brixx sandhill, carolina ale house, or carolina wings before stopping in here.

The place was pretty busy on a Wednesday night, ususally a good sign. Once we got seated we checked out the beer menu and I was a bit disappointed to find that it didn't have everything on it that I saw taps for . If you are going to do a paper menu, it should be reasonably accurate, update it every so often! When I asked about one of the unlisted beers, the server I asked poured me about a 4oz sample to check it out. That's cool! The selection is good, probably second only to The Saucer. The pizzas are great. They really load them up with toppings. Nice thin crust that I had to fold due to the abundance of toppings. My buddy who was down in Columbia working with me, is allergic to dairy and requested no cheese on his sandwich. He got the Mushroom Club which was so ginormous the roll couldn't be closed and a third of the stuff fell out and it came as ordered with no cheese. I'm off to Augusta GA tomorrow, so I'll check out the Augusta shop and report back.

I stop by the Mellow Mushroom every once in a while to enjoy one of their great pizzas as well as a good beer. Their beer selection is pretty good for a restaurant in Columbia, but they can be a little overpriced compared to other places in the same area. They have a wide variety of pizzas, all of which are pretty great. I've never had a bad meal or service here. Sometimes the wait for a table can be a bit long and it does take a while to get the pizza out as well so be prepared (but you can enjoy a brew or two in this time).

Probably in my list of top 5 places to grab a beer and dinner in Columbia.

A friend and myself stopped in here one night for a bite to eat and some brew. Their kitchen seems to be open a litlle later than most bars in the Vista. The food was great and our server was awesome. The beer selction is alright for a "Beer Bar" but real good for a resturant. It is a nice little place and I like how the smoking area and the non smoking are very seperate but still in the same establishment. They have a lot of cool glasses and shirts that are great for people who are visiting from out of town. I always love when I can buy a pint glass.

Stoppd in after my last visit to Green's down here, and I think I have been to every Mellow Mushroom in South Carolina now, which I think is pretty cool. This was kinda nice in the setup having a bar both upstairs and downstairs, but I was not overly impressed with the selections. There were the ocals mixed in with Macros and about 30 bottles or so. I thought Brixx had a better selection, but anyway it was still decent and better then most restaurants so you really cannot complain. The food was more the adequate, and since I usually only get pizza here, they really cant screw it up. A nice place to take the family as it is loud to begin with and since they are always with me, made my life easier. Overall I would say it was an average place, if you are in town stop by, but I would not call it a destination by any means to drive a long ways to.

nice place for pizza and munchies....like their veggie pizza with feta cheeze...
they have a good selection....10 or so taps upstairs..and the normals macros downstairs on tap..upstairs in the cooler they have about 20 more to choose from ....nice selection...nice relaxes atmosphere...
we had a company get together there. ordered about 8 pizzas, service was great....I tried four different beers during the evening..the bar guy seemed to know his stuff and was more than open to suggesting and letting you sample taps...good service...
atmosphere was most casual....would go back on a weeknight in a heartbeat...

This MM has a pretty cool setup. There is a downstairs bar area and the real bar is upstairs. There are about 12 taps upstairs including Rogue, Cottonwood, Franziskainer, Abita, Red Hook, and several others.

The night I was there they were having trouble with the CO2 so everything was way overcarbonated. Service was attentive but was lacking at times. It seems the workers like to talk amongst themselves more than do their job. I find that annoying.

I chose not to get one of their traditional pizzas or strombolis and that was a mistake. I had a BLT and it was pretty subpar. Not much flavor and pretty light on the toppings and ingredient size. Disapppointing to say the least.

Tuesday night is 2 dollar pint night. I found this weird; they serve growlers but you have to drink them at the restaurant. You cant take the beer with you. You can take the bottle, but not the beer. That was a shock when I ordered my growler expecting to take it with me. They were kind enough to let me slide since I was staying right down the street.

Stick to the pizza and other Italian options for food.

I've been to the MM a couple of times, and while I like it well enough, I always leave with that feeling that my money could have gone farther elsewhere.

The food is generally good (though often hyped) and the beer selection isn't bad, though the prices for draft are quite high though. I had the Abita Purple Haze & Yuengling on my last visit, along with a calzone and the hummus appetizer. Quite a few bottled beers available, and the prices there seemed about right, though I prefer draft in this kind of environment.

The atmosphere is nice enough, and the service is good, if a bit on the slow side. Ultimately though, if cost is key, I will go elsewhere.

This Mellow Mushroom is in a two story building. The downstairs must be the non-smoking area and the place for the noisy kids. The really, really, really noisy kids. There is a large bar with a few crappy taps. All the best taps appear to be upstairs.

The tap list is not phenomenal, but is solid. The bottle list is strong and for some reason not overpriced at all. If anything the tap prices may be a bit high.

The service was good once we got some, but to get a beer ordered the first time took way too long. The food was great. Never dissappointed in a Mushroom location's food.

I did not make it upstairs, but next time I might give it a whirl. It is a lively place and if it were three kids lighter the atmosphere score would be higher, and if our waiter had been at the table shortly after being seated that score could raise as well. Give it a whirl...
