Stopped in finally. Really great selection of beer, although I'd prefer the WHOLE store be beer. The guy running the place was cool and seemed knowledgeable when talking to the other customers.

My only real complaint about the shop is the narrow-ass aisles. Seriously- lose some of the wine and widen those things! It's hard to see what you want to look at when your face is smashed up against it. Kinda made me laugh more than it annoyed me.

Overall, a good little shop- the best for miles and miles. Awesome hours, too! Open LATE on Saturday nights (when I went). I walked away with several outstanding selections. I'll be back when I'm up that way again for sure.

EDIT: Chris has been super helpful answering my questions and getting me the beer I request! SUPERB customer service!!!

Some family was visiting the Boone area so naturally I looked for a beer spot for them to pick me up some goodies and I couldn't have been luckier to find Peabody's. First and foremost I need to thank Chris he was exceptionally helpful. I called him and told him the situation, that basically the people stopping by to pick up beer for me know nothing about beer, so Chris basically ran down the list of everything available to him as well as what would be coming in around the time of their visit. He put a box together for me, put it to the side and had it prepared for when my family showed up. Thanks Chris!

My family had a nice conversation with Chris they said he was a very helpful. They even left with a beer or two of their own. I would highly recommend visiting this place if you are ever in the area.

First of all, I would like to thank Chris at Peabody's for making my shopping visit an outstanding experience. The guy is very knowledgeable and a great sales person. Overall, I was pleasantly suprised to discover the selection of beers that they carried in stock, especially products from local breweries in North Carolina. I picked up a couple of bottles of Stonecutter Scotch Ale by Renaissance Brewing Company and Founders Blushing Monk (which I was told by Chris to let age for six months). If you are in the Boone area, then I would highly recommend you visiting Peabody's.

Decided to stop by based on reviews. The reviews don't give the place enough credit. They had a great selection of locals and imports including just about every Mikkeller I've seen and a extensive wine collection also. Chris, the head beer guy at the shop rocked and everyone else was super friendly. After chatting for a minute, I felt like I had been shopping there for years. Chris basically started pulling bottles out for me that just had barely been pulled off the truck. Everything he suggested was spot on based my preferences.

I would highly suggest a visit.

First of all let me say thank you to Chris for making my trip over to Peabody's worth my while. I had met him before when stopping through and he was always very knowledgeable and friendly. There selection is outstanding and always fresh. Its seems like they put a huge emphasis on making sure beers that beers stay in their freshest state. This time around I BM'd Chris before I went up. I left my beer selection in his hands and what a treat he put me on to.

First of all let me tell you about the store. All the folks working there that day were extremely helpful. I told them who I was and they knew immediately that I had a box left in the back for me. They were friendly and knowledgeable. The store is what you want in a beer store. The only reason I gave the atmosphere a 4.5 is because of the Wine...It is divided about 50/50. No knock to the wino's, but I like beer. Anything that is available in NC is here. There is nothing that they cannot get. They are truly beer experts and love the craft as much as anyone walking through that door. They had plenty of fresh Sculpin on hand. Local brews galore and amazing Mikkeller selections. .And just about anything else your pallet desires.

The quality and selection is great. It is refreshing to see a store like Peabody's. On top of that they seem to keep their prices very reasonable. I will give them all my business and refer anyone around to stop in. For a true beer lover you will not be disappointed

Now on to the selections. I am not going to tell you exactly what was left.... But, it made my summer to date and my buddies were blown away. It was a lovely box and I will make sure to return the favor any way I can. The growler from the Firkin Dry Hopped Death by Hops was a particular treat.

I travel extensively across the United States and I can honestly say this is one of, if not my favorite spot....Cheers and thanks to Peabody's for being a great spot. Don't ever change...(Except the wine...you can change that!!)

Made the drive up to Boone, even after finding out it was much further than I initially thought, but it was totally worth it. It's a gorgeous, scenic drive through Western NC which made it completely bearable. DO NOT listen to Google maps, lying son' bitch. BM me for directions if you are coming from the Asheville area if you want or call ahead

Atmosphere is enjoyable. Nice jazz playing and a good feel to the store. A bit cramped and dark in areas with a good deal of space devoted to wine though.

High quality brews ranging from extremely fresh local and out of state IPAs, all the way to vintage brews aged several years.

Service was phenomenal. I communicated with Chris through beer mail before heading up, and he certainly made it worth my while. Even on a busy sale day he took the time to walk the store with me, show me around, and make excellent suggestions that were right up my alley.

Selection was again outstanding. On my first pass, I thought there was mostly wine but the beer shelves were fully stocked, nicely organized, not to mention many fridges in the back filled to capacity. I wasn't looking for imports on this trip but there was a huge selection from which to choose. They stocked all the locals I came to find: Foothills, Olde hickory, Mother Earth etc., and there were a few surprises like Caldera, and a great selection of Founders, Oskar Blues and Ska.

While I did come in on a sale day, the prices were still the best I saw, and multiple discounts were applied to my total. A few vintage bottles did seem a bit pricey.

This place was the best I fond in NC and I would highly recommend it to anyone within several hours of Boone.

I frequented Peabody's while I was in grad school in Boone, 2005-2007. I always stop by a couple of times a year, whenever we make the trip over from Raleigh to visit. I've been stoked to see how much energy they have put into their beer offerings over the past few years. It always seemed like wine was the focus in the past, but the beer selection at Peabody's is absolutely top notch these days.

Basic rundown of the store: divided between wine and beer, maybe 60/40 leaning toward the wine. Up front, there are glass cases with cigars, nice bottle openers, koozies, etc. There is a small cheese selection in a refrigerator case up front, too. They also have a little nook with a mini bar where they do wine tastings and whatnot, along with a decent selection of glassware.

The beer is selection is on 4-5 big floor to ceiling shelves and organized fairly well. Two walls also have refrigerated beers, including growlers and a smaller selection of singles. The variety is exceptional. Lots of standards that are available throughout the state, but they also stock a lot of other harder-to-find stuff. Case upon case of Sculpin, lots of BrewDog and Mikkeler, JW Lees vintages going back to 2002 plus the JW Lees BA stuff, etc. They have a ton of Belgians, including the best lineup of sours I've seen in NC. We made three stops over the weekend, and I could have easily spent hundreds more on stuff I wanted that's not available in Raleigh.

Staff is great...we hung out and chatted with Chris, who was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about craft beer. He made some good recommendations and even had me grab a glass of my choice down off the shelf on the way out.

Looking forward to our next visit to Boonetown.

I miss this store a lot!! I lived in Boone for many years and moved about an hour down the road to Morganton last year. I finally got the chance to get back up to my old stomping grounds this weekend and it was good to get back into my favorite beer shop on the planet! The beer selection here is top notch, everything you could want is here and if it's not they will do their best to order it for you. The guys here really know their stuff and Chris, Kevin, and Benny have always helped me find anything that I was looking for. The other guys (Phill and Perry I think) are very nice too. They always greet you at the door and ask if they can help and are always ready for suggestions. Peabody's always has some of the rarest beers in the state, and they have always been very easy to grab things that seem to go really fast elsewhere (like where I currently live!). I've traveled across the state and this is by far my favorite in terms of selection, service, and atmosphere! The Vintage shelf is awesome! Loads of cool stuff that I can't manage to keep in my cellar! I miss you Peabody's, but luckily I am only an hour down the road so I can visit a couple times a month(as opposed to the six times a week, like I used to!) Definitely a must stop if you are even close to the mountains!

Edit: Rxd a beermail from Chris wanting to know which German beers weren't fresh. I like the fact he is trying to improve his product

Was happy to find this gem. I loved the lay out, beers were laid out by region & countries. Loved the secret stash section!

Quality was a bit spotty; of the two German beers I purchased were tired as was a Bruery Autumn Maple

Service was super friendly & enthusiastic, you can tell craft beer is a passion for the owner (Chris I believe was his name)

Selection was impressive, but could've had a few more NC beers on offer IMO. They also sell growlers

Some of the beers I purchased were quite pricey others were not so bad. If in Boone I will hit this joint again!

This place is rockin'! The best selection of beer I have ever seen. After six years in Boone I am really gonna miss this fine establishment. If you're ever passing through you owe it to yourself to stop in and get some AVBC Summer Solstice and hard to find gems.
They also have some really knowledgeable and friendly staff. There are wine and beer bottles stacked to the ceiling. With so much to choose from it can be overwhelming, but the guys there have great taste and have tried most of it. The Belgian section is great too, with a lot of beers that I have never seen in NC.
If you like good beer, then this place is your adult candy store!

Was in Boone for vacation this month (June 2011), I love Asheville but the Girl loves the high country, as long as Peabody's is around I can enjoy it as much as she does, great selection and great staff. Chris helped me and even found a few things I cant find in Tampa. Thanks for the suggestions I will send people your way! One of the best shops for beer I have been in to! Thanks again guys!

Also as a side not they have a rear finds section and some stuff in a celler - Just ask maybe you can find something that is not even bottled anymore :)

One of the coolest beer/wine shops I've ever been in. We were in Boone with another couple, the guy of which is my Imperial IPA drinking buddy. We found 8-10 Imerials among the hundreds of beers. Not know which to choose from we asked a dude named Chris for some advice and he clearly was a beer lover and had intimate knowledge of each beer we asked about. Per his suggestion we left with a few great Imperial IPA's, and the wives bought a few bottles of wine which were also fantastic.

If I ever get back to Boone, Peabody's will be my first stop!

We moved from Boone a few years back and still come here for vacation; Peabody’s is always on the itinerary. The beer guy Chris is a wealth of knowledge – rest of the staff are always helpful and take you right to what you’re looking for. Great selection of beer and glasses – they also have wine and cigars if that’s your thing. I have called a few times and asked them to put a hold on beer so my in-laws can pick it up for us and Peabody’s always obliges. Their selection is reasonably priced compared to other beer stores in NC. Well worth the trip if you’re ever in the area.

This place was amazing. I stopped by Peabody's on a trip through NC to visit multiple breweries and this beer store ended up being one of the highlights of my trip. The selection, the knowledge of their beer guy Chris, and the prices were much better than anything I can get in Atlanta. Not even at hop city.
They had maybe 100 beers that I can't get in Georgia and probably 400 or so different beers in total. The vintage selection was an awesome idea with beers they cellar at the perfect temperature and then bring out years later for sale. For example they had 5 years of the sierra nevada bigfoot sold as a package. They also did cool things like package the mikkeller single hop beers together. A great way to taste the different hops.
I wish this place was closer to Atlanta, it would be my beer store of choice for sure.
Also, Chris, thanks so much for the Green Flash Le Freak! It's an awesome beer from an awesome brewery.

Amazing place, always stop in on my annual trip to Boone. Super knowledgeable staff (find Chris) will def steer you in the right direction. They've always got the craft staples and some of the harder to find smaller batch brews, but they've also got a selection more coveted bottles coming out of the cellar.

Grabbed a bottle of Oude Geuze by Fonteinen another bottle by Oud Beersel, and some GReat Divide Collette. Buddy of mine snatched some JW Lees Harvest aged in Calvados Casks, Espresso Oak Aged Yeti, and an Ovila. Tasty things will be consumed.

I've been shopping here for years and these guys never let me down. They have the widest wine and beer selection in town with plenty of fine cheeses and chocolates. The beer section is where I spend all my money, and these guys are always keeping the newest, most sought-after beers in stock.

Staff are always friendly and helpful, offering opinions and feedback whenever needed. I've discovered many a great beer by taking their recommendations.

There are two other specialty beer stores in Boone, but the two of them together don't have the selection Peabody's has. If you're going to buy beer in Boone, buy it at Peabody's.

Spent a day in the mountains with my family and made it a point to stop by the famous Peabody's. As I walked in, I was promptly greeted by the guy behind the register and asked if I needed any help. Good service already. The beer section is in the back right side of the store, past all the wine. First thing I see is a nice rack of vintage brews. They had a good selection of aged beers at fairly reasonable prices. The beer is organized well, with a nice Belgian section, NC section, European section, and a large section of coolers with chilled singles, bombers, growlers, and sixers. Very extensive selection. I'd be hard-pressed to not find something I'd want there. Some of the prices are higher than I'm used to, but some were actually lower. I was approached by the aforementioned employee, and asked again if I needed some help. We chatted beer for a bit. I'm really glad I stopped. Definitely one of the best stores in the state, and by far the best store in the area.

[11/7/12 Edit] - This is a place I always stop by when in the area, but this time I got to talk beer with Chris for a bit, and what a pleasure that was! Great guy and excellent businessman, that some of the other "big" beer stores in the state could learn quite a bit from. I was actually here as he had set aside a few brews for me from his cellar, but of course I couldn't leave without grabbing a bunch more off the shelves. This store continues to amaze me as they carry so many more offerings from breweries that I just don't see anywhere else. It is well-worth the extra time and money to drive up here. I will make this much more habitual. Thanks, Chris!

I visit Boone pretty regularly, and I usually stop by Peabody's more than once on a weekend trip. Without a doubt, they have the best customer service of any beer store I've been to. From back when I was first becoming interested in craft beer, and they gladly recommended some excellent beers after I described my tastes, to today, when I get honest and forthright feedback on all my questions on releases and when they'll be getting limited beers. Most beer store employees treat me like I'm putting them out when I ask for certain beers, not a problem here. They'll tell me if they have it, when they had it or when they'll have it, and how much they'll have. I also have to give props to the selection here, because as said before, great variety of NC beers, as well as standard and limited stuff from all over the country, and quite a good belgian selection to boot. Basically, if it gets NC distribution, there is a good chance they'll get it. They even keep a small vintage shelf were they occasionally pull some good stuff they've had stashed away out, with a mark-up of course, but I can't fault them for that. As mentioned, the beers can be a bit pricey, but if you consider the service and selection, you get what you pay for.

So I've been coming to Banner Elk (a little ski town about 20 minutes down the road) for about 10 years and today was the first time I've visited Peabody's. Man, had I been missing out. Since now my travel plans include checking BA and making stops at quality bottle shops along the way, Peabody's definitely made its way onto the itinerary. And for good reason too.

As soon as I walked in I knew this was a quality place. I just happened to run into Chris early into my browsing (by which point I already had several bombers in my possession) and he helped me out with some of the NC locals to make sure I checked out. I finally had to call it quits based more on money than selection. I could, and will, go back for more.

Several nice touches with the aged area; some nice verticals, and a couple of other older vintages.

Chris was a stand-up guy and BA. We exchanged good conversation about beer and you could tell he loves quality stuff.

Overall a must try if in the area.

To name drop just a minute: New Belgium, Allagash, Hoppin' Frog, Founders, Bells, Olde Hickory, Pisgah, Highland, lots of Imports, among others.

I would like to start by saying that this may be the best beer store I've ever been in. I walked in, looked around and knew right away that I was going to need a box or two on the way out.

Atmosphere: Super cool. On the way out of Boone on 105, there was ample parking and you walk in and you just see a great little store with great beers (and wines, if those are your thing too), a wine tasting going on, cool glassware, a "secret stash" stand where the beer buyer for the store sells some of his own items... Super cool.

Quality: I was very pleased, probably because I came across a bunch of stuff that I don't have available to me here and I'm sure that made me more excited than anything. Good quality stuff from all over the world though and it is pretty well stocked and the people know their stuff.

Service: I read a review of this place before I went and one of the posters stated that he walked in the door and was greeted by no less than three people, and I had the EXACT same experience. Everyone working wanted to know if they could help me, they all knew their beer and stock and were able to make recommendations and pull items if you needed them. Typically I don't like to talk to a lot of employees and just browse around, but these folks were cool, I mean, just cool.

Selection: I was happy, again, because I was able to pick up quite a bit that I don't have access to. It doesn't really compare to the likes of the Party Source in Bellevue, KY, but come on, that's a freaking Walmart sized store dedicated to alcohol.

Value: For the most part, it was exactly what i would expect and when you want good beer, you always have to pay a little bit more and that's not necessarily bad. The "secret stash" stand was definitely high, but hey, who am I to judge if a guy wants to charge $30 bucks for a Rasputin XI (if I had a little more spending money, I think I may have picked it up myself), that's his business.

After being told at Bruisin Ales that there were no more Pisgah Vortex II or Valdez to be had, I punched Peabody's into my GPS and headed to Boone. I had never been to Peabody's and had heard from a few people that it had a nice selection. The place was in a good location near the main streets of Boone. I go into the store, and immediately am greeted by at least 3 people working there. I start to look around and lo and behold, I see case on top of case of Pisgah Vortex II and Valdez! Along with that, I see growlers of Pisgah along with others. I continue around the store and glace down to see KBS on the bottom shelf! I haven't seen KBS on the shelves of any store in months! They also have Mikeller, Ballast Point, and plenty of Olde Hickory, just to name a few, plus a super glassware section. I was impressed, Chris and the staff are super friendly and knowledgable. I will probably just skip the asheville stores and head straight for Boone next time. Thumbs up!

Stopped in here on Christmas Eve to pick up some supplies for the weekend...

I'd been past this place on several occasions over the years, and was excited to finally stop in to check it out. Stepping in, I was warmly greeted by the staff, as well as the huge stockpile of glassware at the checkout counter. A little browsing revealed a pretty good selection of craft brews - especially those of the western North Carolina variety... a lot of Pisgah, which was a nice surprise, as I've had some trouble procuring bottles of theirs for a while. Lots of beer in fridges (including local growlers) which is nice. One plus, was the "Deep Deals" section, which during my visit had Boont Amber 6-pks for $7.99 - wow! Other than the sale stuff, most other prices seemed on par with other shops (maybe a touch over). As I mentioned, they offered quite a bit of glassware - a separate section seemed to be dedicated entirely to NC brews... pretty cool. Staff was helpful and friendly, and I'll definitely be back on my next visit to the mountains.

Stopped here and picked up a few things. Disappointed singles were allowed only on floor beers and not on some small distribution locals, and staff didn't seem real knowledgable. Prices also seemed a little higher than in other locales, but considering its remoteness its understandable. Place was easy to get around and stocked OK. Did have some special aged bottles there of some hard to find beers which I found interesting, as that I don't think I've seen before. A good stop if you're in the area and a starting point in North Carolina.

Conveniently located on Hwy 105 just off of 321, Peabody's is the go-to place for those of us who live in the hinterlands of Ashe County. I've been to many beer stores in my life, several much larger than Peabody's. However, this place certainly stacks up with the best of them.

All the local breweries are available but the best thing about a store like this is the availability of seasonals that you won't find in most grocery stores that have a small selection of craft beers.

The staff is exceedingly friendly and, from what I could tell, knowledgeable. The prices are a little steep at times, especially on beers that you can find at grocery stores. However, if you want a greater bredth of good beer, this is the palce to go.

Peabody's is an excellent beer and wine shop in Boone. While the grocery stores definitely carry a lot of the typical local brews, Peabody's is the only one that will have the locals and then a bunch of other stuff that will surprise you. I wnet in planning to spend about $60-70 on local beer. I spent about $45 on local NC beers from Mother Earth, Olde Hickory, French Broad, and Highland, but also found brews I don't have access to including Boulder Beer Mojo Risin', Hoppin' Frog BORIS, and Ballast Point Sculpin and Black Marlin Porter. They had a ton of Belgians as well, and I bought my first German marzen of the year as well. I would definitely stop back the next time I am in Boone, either for during the trip or for future at-home consumption or trading. Kevin was very helpful in pointing me in the right directions regarding local beers, and he asked about what I liked and provided some really good DIPA finds. Make it a point to stop in -- you'll be glad you did. Their prices are average to slightly above-average, but they have the goods and service to back up their prices. An excellent beer store.
