Typical older liquor store.
OK selection of craft beer including a number of Nebraska brewers but the lack of singles and bombers was very disappointing and a bit odd.
Prices seemed in line with the norm.
Staff seemed friendly.

I stopped into Bill's Liquor when I was in Kearney recently. I only stopped at one other store looking for beer, but it wasn't in the same league as Bill's so I don't have an apples to apples to compares. I can compare it to the myriad beer stores I have visited around the country though. I also felt a recent review was needed here.

I found the store to be not all that large, but sufficiently stocked. There were not as many Nebraska beers as I was hoping for, but perhaps that is simply due to not a lot being bottled. Empyrean Brewing was well represented and I picked up some from them as well as some offerings from Odell Brewing. They had a decent selection, but for a person who has tried most of the standards you would be hard pressed to find something new aside from seasonals. This can be said for most of your normal liquour stores however.

The highlight was that for making your purchase you can take some popcorn and I was like a hero when I got back out to the car and gave my kids (who were waiting with my wife, not alone) the popcorn.

This store met my needs.

So I stopped in to Bill's on a quest for good beer. I was looking for micros's imports and locals. I think I found the place.

As I looked around this cluttered little store I found pretty much every thing I was looking for. They had several local Nebraska beers. A hand full of craft and micros. Some imports and even a line of lambics!

After about five minutes of browsing I ended up with Sam Adams Cream Stout and Empyreans ESB.

I have to say this is Kearney's gem for beer. Even though it is small they definitely have the best selection of "good" beer!

Ive found two really good beer stores in Kearney, one having a good Quantity of beers and the other having a good Quality of beers. This is the place where Quality of beer riegns. They have some very choice beers available. Beers like Hennipin and Ommagong - stuff i havn't found in my search of nebraska yet.

I might be a little biased here, though. On my first visit i found 7 oz bottles of 1995 Old Crusteation from Rogue. What a score!

If you are in Kearney, and looking for some Belgian beer, this is the place to go, i would say.

This is the most popular liquor store in Kearney, it is conveniently located at the intersection of the two main streets in town. This smallish, stand-alone building is sort of rundown and littered with macro-beer, cigarettes, and liquor advertisements. It looks like a typical small town liquor store. When I lived in Kearney I visited this place damn near every day, my house was only a couple blocks away.

This inside is persistently messy. Not so much dirty but very, very unorganized with boxes of liquor, beer, and wine, etc… It is oddly dim inside. The aisles are small and tight. They keep most of the beer in a cooler on the back wall but odd cases and six-packs are scattered throughout the store. The selection is okay, remember this is Kearney and it is a college town. They do carry the local microbrewery, Platte Valley, in 22 ounce bottles. I’ve never seen another Nebraska beer, which is disappointing. Boulevard’s core line-up is available (Bully! Porter, Pale Ale, Unfiltered Wheat). New Belgium’s simpler beer is available (Fat Tire, Sunshine Wheat, 1554). SA Boston Lager, Cream Stout, and Ale are common. The imports are hit and miss; Guinness, Murphy’s and Beamish stouts are “always” available. Beck’s, Corona, Heineken, maybe Samuel Smith, and maybe Paulaner. I’ve never seen any Belgium beers or really outstanding imports but again, you’re in Kearney.

The service is okay. You might be treated rudely if you’re perceived as a college kid. And they will check your id, even if you are a grandparent. Otherwise they are helpful.

If you’re in Kearney for a period of time and you’ve visited Thunderhead Brewpub and Platte Valley’s taproom then stop at Bill’s.
