Sun Harvest Market is probably one of the more unknown and underappreciated beer stops in Austin. This particular location is in South Austin, in a corner of the Brodie Oaks shopping center down at the far end of South Lamar Street. It's easy to miss the sign if you're not looking for it. Parking can be a challenge on the weekends, as the Brodie Oaks Center is a bustling retail space.

Sun Harvest is a direct competitor to H.E.B.'s Central Market and Whole Foods. In Austin, it's the type of place where both the male and female patrons all smell vaguely like hemp and sport ponytails and underarm hair. But amongst the granola, vitamins, and holistic health books lies a heck of a good beer store.

They have a couple of beer coolers set up, one devoted to macro-type domestics and imports, and a larger one set up for domestic and imported craft brews. Now it's not the biggest selection in town, but what it lacks in volume it more than makes up in quality. They had a fine list of beers available when I went, and some hard to find stuff to boot. I picked up Delirium Tremens, St. Bernardus abt 12, and a bottle of Celebrator Doppelbock. I could have easily dropped a whole lot more money as they had a good lineup of other stuff in stock. They probably had upwards of 100 different beers, mostly craft and import oriented.

The staff was helpful. The store was clean and bright, not overly crowded. The beer section and the wine section were in the same area, and they did have some mixture of product that made for a little confusion, but overall the presentation was nice. The prices were VERY competitive compared to some other stores in town.

It had been a while since I had been to Sun Harvest. I won't wait so long to visit again.
