When Gorbachev visited the Twin Cities he came here for the Walleye and that is the main reason why you will want to come here. the vibe is north country wood and it includes a sports bar type area with TV screens. They have a reasonably good selection of local and regional craft beer selections.

Walleye!! That's why you come here. Battered, blackened, grilled, they're all excellent. I recommend the jalapeno tartar sauce and the seasoned waffle fries. There's also a live fish tank you can sit near and take in the aquatic scene. Beyond that, the service is consistently good and the prices are not bad. You can get a great brew here with your fish, but don't expect a broad selection. The crowd is mainly older and local for the most part. Otherwise, the previous posts have accurately covered the Tavern.

A favorite for lunch when I lived nearby and somewhere I make a point to stop at when visiting St. Paul .

Stated in previous reviews...an absolute staple in St. Paul...and in my opinion the best place on Grand Ave....the Blackened Walleye sandwich washed down with a nice brew is an absolute killer way to do lunch...I live in Minneapolis...but this is one my favorite places that my girlfriend and I frequent! Good selection of Bell's, also some good local favorites like Surly and seasonal Summit's...good place, great staff...good hometown feel, cozy, and just makes you feel like home...They recently renovated the other side, and put in some odd looking wood paneling...that actually looks like a MN lodge...very cool place, good mix of people, young and old...all enjoying a great MN restaurant/bar...not a better place I can think of on a cold MN day for lunch...

I prefer the battered, but thats me. I Like going to this place every now and then just for that and thats about it. But Tavern On Grand has a great appeal, with extremely friendly service and neighboring tables, the bar area is larger then nearly the whole main dining room with the exception of the back room. This place has a hugely dedicated group of locals who travel far and near just to sit, relax, drink, and eat the walleye. Don't think I've ever tried anything but the walleye to tell you the truth. Do to its popularity, good prices, and overall family type theme this place can be very busy and at any given moment, but mid afternoons seem to be the slower of all times I've gone (1:30 - 3:30) without much problem getting a seat. Beer selection isn't all that bad, average for sure though, just limited to mostly local with a few imports that can be found anywhere. This is a go-for-the-food, stay-for-the-food kinda place and is well worth a stop; but not for a beer really, I'd head up Dale to The Muddy Pig after eating the walleye. Cheers!

An absolute "institution" in St. Paul...as often said -- "famous for walleye", a nice fresh-water eating fish that Minnesotans die for (even though the walleye is from Canada here). Better broiled, the battered walleye basket with fries is also a lunch favorite. Extremely comfortable, cozy, and friendly, booths and the bar dominate the left, large dining rooms the right. Lots and lots of wood and paraphenalia abound. The taps are decent -- Summits, Page, Grain Belt and Leinie's will give out-of-town visitors a taste for Minnesota and Guinness and Sam Adams round out the better choices. A variety of Bell's beers are now on tap. If I could only go to one place on Grand Avenue on a trip, this would be the place, good food (lots of other choices aside from fish, vegetables are actually well-prepared), good drink, family-friendly but has that local atmosphere that's lacking at joints that "youngens" hang out at. Can get very crowded at times, so plan ahead.
