Our team at Pioneer Beer crafted our New England style India Pale ale with an excessive amount of American hop varieties. Poured into a 16 oz Nordic pint glass canned on 9/13/18. Pours a slightly hazy orange with a finger plus sticky white head that leaves nice thin wisps of lace behind.

Smell is tangerine, apricot, pine resin, and grapefruit rind.

Taste follows tangerine and apricot, with some bitter pine and grapefruit.

Mouthfeel is a big medium, plenty of carbonation, a tad dry, and goes down plenty easy.

Overall this is a very nice beer, but lacking the it factor.

Poured from a 16 oz can into a spiegelau glass.

Pours a cloudy, golden orange hue with a half-finger of white head. The head leaves very little lacing before settling into a thin ring.

The aroma is all about that fresh mango and peach. Then comes some notes of tangerines, grapefruit, and honeydew melon. Has a faint, earthy dankness in the back.

The flavor brings forth notes of mangoes, papaya, and peaches, followed by a wave of citrus. Finishes subtly piney with the foggiest idea of graham cracker malt.

The feel is pretty close to perfect. Medium bodied with lower carbonation. Exceptionally soft and pillowy. Goes down smooth and creamy with minimal alcohol presence.

Overall, this is a great DIPA and I have to admit I'm surprised. I had heard about some less than respectable usages of Untappd when this beer was first being released under the Pioneer name. Regardless, this is a great beer that shares some similarities to Julius but is able to stand on its own. Very flavorful and highly drinkable.

Pours a cloudy dirty orange color with a smallish tight creamy head.

The aroma is of citrus and tropical fruit notes. Big orange and pineapple. Perhaps some ripe mango.

The taste is of tropical fruits, mango mostly and pineapple. There is a bit of a minty hop as well. The malt is neutral and bready.

The feel is well bodied with soft carbonation. Sweet on the palate. Surprisingly little bitterness. A bit of an ABV burn.

A sweet DIPA but not cloying.

This beer feels to me like an attempted Julius clone, albeit with a little more alcohol (it's a DIPA). But they didn't get the same level of refinement that Treehouse has. The look and smell is very reminiscent of Julius. It's got the thickness, the floating yeast particles or whatever that stuff is, smells like orange soda . . . yeah, all that. But it's taste is peppery, too much bite for what it's trying to be. And the aftertaste is a separate experience from the beer. It's not a bad aftertaste, it's just not part of the rest of the beer, if that makes any sense. So overall this feels like a beer that tries a bit too hard and it doesn't quite gel together. It's not bad but it's just not at all representative of the top of its style. Think: a rough, rugged attempt at cloning a top NEIPA.
