Notes: A superb thirst quenching, refreshing beer packed full of flavour, lightly hopped with subtle sweet notes and a delicate citrus aroma. Inspired by the author Alfred Wainwright, famous for his Lakeland Fell guidebooks. For every summit Wainwright conquered through his passion and commitment, each one delivered the ultimate reward. Refreshingly Rewarding for those who think they’ve earned it.

Cask at The Coach House Inn, Chester.
Gold. Creamy dense lasting white head. Beautiful Aroma fruity and flowery but light. Feel surprisingly oily, creamy. Taste light lemony fruity quality almost like lemon curd. Sweetish with balancing zesty bitterness.

Pint in The George, St. Helen's (£3):
Golden & translucent with a nice, straight white head that's creamy & holds well just under 1cm tall. It's very light smelling, some biscuit, English hops & light, pale malts; inoffensive but there's not a lot to it. The taste is only marginally stronger, some biscuit again with pale, earthy malts & a subtle floral finish but it's very one-dimensional. It's light-medium bodied with a clean, smooth feel & moderate carbonation then a light bitterness at the end; basic.

500ml bottle.
L: Clear, dark gold colour with no carbonation, a thin head and sheets of lacing.
S: Nothing.
T: Sweet honeysuckle (too sweet).
F: Light body with just a hint of sticky mouthfeel.
O: Not sure if my tastebuds have changed or Carlsberg/Marstons have messed with the recipe, but this is no longer the solid, refreshing English golden ale that I remember. Too sweet and sickly for me now and the mouthfeel is insipid. Beyond boring, even on this summer evening. Didn’t finish.

Original 2016 review -
L: Perfectly clear, golden colour. No sign of carbonation at all despite the rich and persistent cap. Rings of lacing. Looks right ready for drinking.
S: Nose is subtle. Faint trace of summer hay. Nothing unpleasant.
T: Sweet malt, floral hops. Designed for easy drinking.
F: A little buttery, a little sweet, a little bitter, and foaming carbonation.
O: A light, refreshing golden ale. Would love to try this on tap. A pleasant summertime beer.

Shared 500 ml bottle, as Thwaites Wainwright Golden Ale, bought in London. ABV is 4.1%. Clear golden colour, moderate white head. Sourish and dusty aroma, hints of old jam. The flavour is better, fairly decent hops throughout. Medium dry, light bodied.

Pale gold with loose white head; grainsack, honey, pear, soap + wood spice on the nose; crackery grain, some orchard fruit, vague grass; slight bitterness, round and soft.

4 4 3.5 3.75 3.5

Starts out well enough, with a layered nose, and drinks well up front. But this just dies on the finish: no kinda hops, even for the lagery end of golden ale, and flabby body isn’t helping.
I wish I’d tasted this before Marstons took it over, but even Thwaites was always hit and miss.
I suspect this is just a subpar BGA, especially up against the modern wave of mini-session IPAs taking over the style.

Pours pale golden and clear, lots of bubbles on the side of the glass, small head that disappeared quickly. Pleasant smell, taste is light and unsubstantial, fresh. Feels quite thin. Overall not too bad.

Authentic from the north of England, Wainwright tastes different than the EPAs I'd been getting from the south (for example, just had a very soft Marston's brand.) Glad that I'm learning enough to make the geographic/taste connections.

Wainwright's Looks, of course, are more golden; but the lace on the glass seems same. Smells are mostly malt and some citrus hops popping out. Tastes are nicely balanced and the malts reemerge subtly in the finish. Refreshing.

My first from Thwaites, I went on their website and I see that they've "been working on the perfect pint for 200 years." I discover they are mostly a hospitality company with inns and pubs and that they brew their own beer... which is really good hospitality. Maybe our paths will cross again.

Appearance: This one is clear and golden with a white head only an inch worth of head.

Aroma: A little bit of yeasty notes in the front faint citrus with traces of biscuits and buttery.

Taste: Light bodied fairly smooth mouthfeel. Faint citrus notes with some grain sweetness is there but it's more underlying than anything which lends a good balance.

Notes: This one is solid, straight forward and a drinkable English pale ale. Cheers.

It pours golden and with a small head. The aroma is reminiscent of a hoppy pilsner. The taste is fairly mind much in the tradition of British ales. Nice balance between the malts and the lemony hops.

A big malt hit of flavour with nice hoppy balance. Not a full mouth-feel as it tends to disappear at the back of the mouth to a citrus-like twang. It urges you to drink more. Refreshing. Best to be consumed after coming down from the mountains!

Pint from cask. Pours a light gold with minimal head (head was probably minimized by server). A very light nose, just a bit of bready malt and honey coming through...was hoping for more. Flavor is surprisingly hoppy. Very grassy and mildly bitter, it is surprising after the lack of hops on the nose. A bit watery, but plenty of those grassy notes and some malt and apple skin. Overall, an interesting brew that could really benefit from being more well rounded.
