Bottle-conditioned, contains alive yeast strands.
Pours deep brown-black beer with creamy 2-finger tan head. Smell of coffee, nuts and dark chocolate. Taste is a bit sour, some liquorice, minerals, definite smoked finish. Low carbonation, medium body, smooth. Decent porter.

Quite a nice all-rounder medium porter; I didn’t find all too much in the way of aroma. A very nice thick and frothy head which holds throughout the time drinking. Quite a smooth and easy going taste throughout. Dark bodied and thick classic porter.

I didn’t find this to be a bad beer at all however it’s not right up there as a top beer; a good safe porter at a good price and availability. It will be bought again!

A - coffee with a thin head that clings to the glass
S - nice aromas of coffee, chocolate, and roast malt
T - strong coffee a little chocolate then liquorice. Moderately bittered earthy hops linger.
M - heavy bodied with slightly more moderate carbonation.
O - I like it. It is a porter more towards the stout territory than most and the carbonation was slightly too high, but I would dcertainly have this again.

500ml (Bottle conditioned): best before 2nd Dec 2012, poured into an Abbot Ale glass tankard during my IPA and Porter evening on 11th Aug 2012.

Dark brown almost black body, thin fading head arrived and left.

Burnt treacle in the nose and taste: heavy in the mouthfeel, dry, semi-bitter and leaning more towards a good UK Mild more than an accomplished Porter. This came last on my score card for Porters, the flavours being weak rather than pushing my taste buds.

Pours a cola black body whilst the head disappears quickly and apart from a couple of islands of bubbles is basically a tanned rim of the glass.

Aromas of freshly made coffee and ground pepper.

Smokey tastes quite subdued on the charcoal notes, not sure about the liquorice immediately t more bonfire toffee to start, but as the glass empties and the beer warms it does appear.
Not heavy, easy going in fact, highly quaffable.
Not a threat to the title of world's best porter but decent enough weekend sipper.

Body is black with a large bubbled foamy taupe head.
Aroma of cocoa, salted licorice, sweat glazed beef and Marmite.
Taste is of soapy, rubbing alcohol, stale instant coffee.
Mouthfeel is thin and soapy. Initial light cola like.
Overall seems more like a dark mild. In my view not great.

Copper-black with a creamy, rocky sepia-mauve head that's slow to fade but leaves speckles of lace. Cocoa powder on the nose with soil and charred meat.
Big milk chocolate hit up front, root beer tang, some black malt acid and roasty ash then gentle black tea hops.
Muscavado finish and licorice linger. Smooth, soft, medium, luscious.

Incredibly velvety, with understated stout flavours that are much rounder than the typical coffee-cocoa hit. The body is a bit light, but dead on for a porter. Much of the roast seems to fade with the head for whatever reason, and hops are maybe a bit absent, leaving it a bit sweet in the bottom half of the pint, but again, that's not out of line for the style.

Thwaites stops just short of calling this a historic recipe, but it certainly stands out from most of what's out there. More quality from Blackburn.
