The previous reviewer said everything that needed to be said about this place. I just want to confirm that if you every traveling out this way then this a must stop.

Even if you are stricly a beer lover, and remeber that this place is cider only, you will appreciate that this place a rarity and is preserving a great tradition: local cider.

I was in Newton Abbot for the Maltings festival, but had heard about this place and knew I had to visit. It was doing brisk business with other beer lovers had gotten the word as well

Most Pubs in the UK sell some form of Cider, but sadly, typically it is an artificially sweetened, pasteurized, filtered and generally “buggered about with” kind of Cider, or what could be dubbed a “macro-Cider”. The Good News is that in recent years as the profile of Real Ale has improved some Pubs that have a focus on offering several Cask beers have removed their sole naff “macro-Cider” and replaced it with a Real Cider. But even so, Real Cider (and its counterpart, Perry made with Pears) is still quite rare in the UK. As such, CAMRA (thankfully) has a small but dedicated subsidiary group called APPLE whose purpose is the promotion of Real Cider & Perry.

This all goes to make Ye Old Cider Bar in Newton Abbot something very special. Set in a homeland for Real Cider, South Devon, it is also close to Dartmoor, where I had been walking on my last visit. For this place is a ‘Cider House’, whereas an ‘Ale House’ sold only beer & no spirits (liquors), a Cider House sells only Real Cider and NO beer. I believe that there are only 4 or 5 Cider Houses left in the entire UK, so they are very rare indeed and quite something to experience first hand.

Ye Olde Cider House looks like any other licensed establishment in the UK from the outside. But once inside, it feels like you are in a Cider Barn. The décor is very bare, basic, minimalist & simple, just as you would expect. There are no carpets or fancy comfy chairs here, but there is lots of wood everywhere, indeed some of the Chairs & Tables are fashioned from old wooden cask staves, the Bar frontage itself has a cladding of them also.

The Cider range is nothing short of excellent. In fact, although the Cider House sells Real Cider & Perry, and NO Beer or Liquors (Spirits in UK) it does in fact also sell some Country Fruit Wines & soft drinks for the designated driver if you have one. All the Cider is gravity dispensed from either 5 Gallon plastic “polypins” formed in the shape of upright casks with a lower white plastic twist tap & a large threaded capped top, or better still, one of the large authentic wooden Oak Cider Casks behind the Bar. It usually has around 6-10 Real Ciders & 1 or 2 Perry’s. Typically offerings are from Winkleigh, Thatcher’s & Weston’s with the occasional Guest Cider & Perry. Winter time sees the even rare spiced Ciders which are to die for. Selection Mark is for Real Cider - it's unequalled!!!

Food is basic fare, but home made. Thick Bread Sandwiches or local Pasties complement the Cider perfectly. These are great value also and help to soak up the high gravity Ciders.

I have been here twice, maybe three times, and as an avid Real Ale drinker I have to say that Real Cider is as far removed from the processed macro-Ciders as Stone Arrogant Bastard is from Budweiser. Real Cider is stunningly fruity, incredibly thirst quenching, copiously quaffable and bloody dangerous. Ye Olde Cider House has been in the same family ownership for something like 30+ years and never changes, why should it? This is the English equivalent of a Payottenland Lambic Bar – come here while you can, places like this demand a visit and will not last much longer.

A must do if you ever get down to Devon – come here, and as Laurie Lee would have said, try some “Cider with Rosie”
