Given to me as a gift in growler from family who was vacationing in Vermont. Didn't expect too much from it, so it was pleasantly surprising that it was not half bad. Dare I say it was rather good for a small pub-brew. Smell is faint of hops and bitters. Very dark with little to no head. Smooth but flat. A little bitter on the backside like most IPAs.

On cask poured into a pint glass paired with a brownie sundae and boy is it good together!

Pours a dark black with a nice small dark brown head. Nose is flat and tame a bit of bitterness.

Taste is sweet, bitter and a nice and dark toasty chocolate coffee flavor that works very well on cask. Mouthfeel is a bit too light, kind of flat and a dry finish. Overall decent but a great dessert beer.

Had a glass at the brewpub bar. This was my favorite of the beers I sampled. It's dark and hoppy, with a decent balance between the two characters. My only complaint is that the citrus doesn't stand out from the grains as much as some black ales. Still, there was a nice bite that matched the bitter grains. A fine ale.

Caramel and a malty note underneath that and a hop bitterness on the finish.

Pours a pitch black color with a one-finger head. Aroma is both hoppy and malty at the same time, similar to a highly-hopped stout. Taste is roasty and bitter. The dry-hopped Fuggles show through well and add some character to this beer. The bitterness is nice and yet subdued. You wouldn't know this was an IPA if you didn't check the style. Not bad but at the same time, tastes too much like a stout to me.

Cask? Dark brown with shades of Amber and a light brown frothy head. Good aromas of roasted sweet malt and hops. Well balanced and plenty of hops for the discerning palate. A true black IPA. Smooth, creamy, good finish.

This beer is one of the elusive black IPAs I have come to enjoy. Off the tap it was indeed an opaque brown, nearly-black color. The tan head was one finger, displayed very good retention especially as a skim and left good lacing. The aroma was light, floral hops and rich malts. The flavors were outstanding, solid citrus rind and floral hops balanced with roasted malt, sweet malt, coffee and milk chocolate. A best-of-both-worlds beer. The mouthfeel was smooth but slightly oily, the body medium/full and the carbonation light. A sessionable IPA and a very unusual offering. One of the best beers they have produced in a while, try it!

A: Almost black with very small head left tons of lace down the glass

S: Roasted malt, slight bit of sweetness and some hop aroma

T: Excellent, had the dark smooth roasty malt flavor with a little hop bite you would expect from an IPA, but not as much as you would normally get from a standard one

M: had great texture but did seem a tiny bit thin

D: I feel I could go with several pints of this easy, tastes amazing and very easy to drink.

Really thought it was the best of both worlds. I'm a big dark beer fan, and not a huge hop head and I thought this balanced both perfectly. Great job VPB!
