Visited during Brewpublic pub crawl 3.20.2010.

A small innocuous yellow house located on fairly busy Division, the Hedge House is a gem of a beer establishment. The nice outdoor area, featuring about 6 picnic tables, was absolutely packed on a glorious first day of spring, with almost an hour wait to sit outside. The inside, is a bit dank and dark. There is no bar at the bar, per se, instead there's a small bar against a wall nearby the kitchen. Our organizers had the veggie burger, though I didn't try the beer it appeared quite good. Nice variety of Lompoc beers including three seasonal, a Baltic Porter, and farmhouse ale being on tap the day I visited. Beers at $3.25 were a good value. The help, despite the substantial crowd, was cheerful and quite helpful. For those fans of Lompoc on the Eastside, definitely worth a visit. For those who are fans of beer and chocolate, with Pix Patisserie next store, an absolute must.

Dulcie and Aylwin's big beer adventure day something-or-other. Sunday we venture out at a time dangerously close to breakfast to sample yet more of Beervana's (that's Portland if you are wondering) breweries. First stop for a little brunch was Hedge House part of the New Old Lompoc "conglomerate." Luckily we had the address for otherwise we would have driven right by, hidden as it is as a house in a very residential area. Completely charming: it is as if you are hanging out in a neighbour's yard - which is exactly what you are doing. Yet again we were left to muse on how unlikely, no impossible, this scene would be in uptight Chicagoland with all its zoning laws, concerns about morality and the evils of drink.

The place, though minuscule, was pleasantly uncrowded, a nice patio table immediately available. Prices are to die for on the weekend ($3.25 a pint or something) for some decent beer such as LSD or the C-note IPA (their "Imperial" version).

The negative: if you want food, you better not be in a hurry (but whoever is in Portland), because we waited nearly 45 minutes for a sandwich (PABST). It was pleasant; we were in no hurry, so it was okay.

I went to the Hedge House when it first opened a few months back and they have continued to improve the place, particularly by putting a roof over the patio and putting signage that is visible from the street. The place is a tiny old house converted into... well it still feels like someone's house, only with a bar in the corner and tables by the front door. The place really is tiny, and not much more than a dozen people can sit comfortably inside. This doesn't matter since they have built a huge outdoor patio which can accomodate large numbers. And on a pleasant day with warm weather, this is where you will want to be. The patio is flanked by a wall of hop vines. Indoors, there is a wrought-iron vine that winds through the entire room. This wrought-iron element can be seen elsewhere throughout the place, even in the bike rack out front. The bathrooms are awkwardly situated in the center of the room and take up about 45% of the floor plan. About 5 or 6 Lompoc beers available, which are quite tasty even if they always seem to be on the flat side (this is true at Lompoc's other location and seems symptomatic of all their beers -- nitro-infused LSD being the exception). The menu is pretty limited, with sandwiches and salads, more on the healthy side and lacking the usual fried or grilled pub staples. The PABST sandwich (Provolone, Avocado, Bacon, Sprouts, Tomato) is popular, and I enjoyed the chicken sandwich too. The Hedge House is a homey, welcoming joint, the perfect place to go if you want to go out to eat and drink, but remain in the mellowing comfort of a home environment. When you are done, go next door to Pix for dessert and a great Belgian-centric beer selection.

I may not start my review without acknowledging the true spirit and beer karma of a fellow BA: Without freed (and BA!) I would never have experienced this side of Portland.

The Hedge House is in an area of Portland that is relatively suburban. Its in a quiet little neighborhood and is housed in an old house. Its outside deck area feels just like having a party at your friend's place. There are hop vines growing up impromptu trellises that I could not help but be intrigued by as I was drinking.

The waitstaff was very friendly and knowledgable about beer. I found the New Old Lompoc beer to be exceptional though I only had a few varieties. The LSD (lompoc strong draft) was a fabulously ambiguous beer with plenty of hops and nitro. The C-Note was by far my favorite beer in Portland, chock full o'hops and none of that nasty plastic taste I'd been getting everywhere.

The food was rather unimpressive and expensive in my opinion. Lackluster sandwich, in my case. But I didn't get a fair view only tasting 2 of the menu items. Seemed like Beer was the main emphasis here.

If this were anywhere near my house i'd probably be my second home. Fabulous-o.

Finally got around to visiting the satellite location of one of Portland's best local brewpubs. The Hedge House resides in a small yellow home set back from a vivacious neighborhood. There are plenty of options for food and drink in the area, but this is a great place itself.

The house is eerily like a house I lived in during college. Its small, old, and settling at odd angles. The decor is nice albeit yellow, and the inside seems quite cozy, but it gets somewhat loud as it fills.

Since it was full, and it was a gorgeous evening, we ate outside on the patio underneath a bizarre flowering tree. It was loosing flowers that seemed to be from a rhodie, but the tree itself seemed more like a tulip tree. Regardless, that's unimportant to the review. The outside provides for nice dining and allows you bring along that special four-legged someone.

The service was pretty standard tonight, but there seemed to be more people than there was support for. Dinner was great though, and beers were also top-notch. Its hard to go wrong with a C-note or two.

This is a delightful location that puts as important an emphasis on outdoor seating as the main location. The beer and food are great, and its also in a great neighborhood. Definitely worth another visit, cheap pints on Tuesdays and weekends.
