Floral, Bready, Bitter, Yeasty
Gorgeous to the eye, STS is pale straw in color with a thick, creamy head. The nose is floral, spicy and bready and the first sip is creamy and oh-so smooth. It starts with a solid malt base that's a bit bready and crackery. Then soft, prickly carbonation delivers citric, floral and herbal flavors with a dry, bitter finish and bready and yeasty linger. A hop-forward Pils with a lot going on, STS still retains its balance and showcases the brewery's take on the style. I love the Pig, the Plinys, the -tions and the barrel-aged beers, but this is my new favorite from Russian River.

As reviewed in BeerAdvocate magazine #104 (September 2015).

The groan beer when the list for wild friendship day was released turned out to be a nice surprise. A fresh, clean finishing pilsner with the hop presence you'd expect from Russian River. Would grab again for sure.

510 ml bottle. Pours bright clean straw yellow, thick foamy fluffy head that won't go away, some suds cling on as it eventually recedes. Light grain n grass aroma. Light grain sweetness combined with some nice zesty lemon and grassy bitterness. Very clean dry finish. Great mouthfeel for the style, medium soft n slippery. Excellent pilsner, one of the best I've had so far.

Surprise of the day at Wild Friendship Blend. Well balanced, incredible aroma and a nice biscuity malt backbone. A little hoppy for style. Great Americanized pilsner.

Best Pilsner there is. Zesty lazer-like finger lime taste. Dry mouthfeel and the pilsner bitter finish. Just refreshing as it gets. Med to full bodied within beer type.

For those that like dry lighter style beers

Very pretty beer: lively and active, with a solid snow white, firm head, with excellent retention and leaving behind tons of lacing. A slight haze keeps the pale straw yellow body just shy of completely transparent.

Pils malt comes through cleanly on the nose, accompanied by spicy, vegetal hops. A touch of sweetness; bread and biscuit; light flowers.

Familiar pilsner taste throughout. Malts give a slightly sickly sweet bready profile up front; bitter and slightly sweet flowery hops come through mid-palate; the finish is all clean hops washing the palate, with vegetal, green notes, and plenty of bitterness. Just a hint of bready sweetness returns as the hops start to fade from view.

Refreshing and lively; smooth with just a little bit of bite. Nearly puckering from the finishing bitterness, which is sparkly and slightly dry, with just a little bit of hop oil retention coating the mouth.

Pilsners are certainly not my favorite brews, but this is a superbly executed pilsner. Plenty of bracing bitterness without falling into the trap of overly flavoring the brew with hops. The malt presents cleanly and strongly, but is balanced throughout.

A likeable, if decidedly bitter and hoppy, pils from RR. Best part is the nose, which gave nice whiffs of bready pils malt, alongside some lightly floral hops. Pretty nice looking in the glass, great foam/retention. I know this is unfiltered intentionally, but it was still a touch distressing to see a floatie or two in the brew. At any rate, the palate is a nice mix of restrained maltiness + spicy, floral bitter hops. It's refreshing, but I think I'd prefer a slightly more present malt character, but that's just personal preference when it comes to pilsners. Overall, a fine brew, although, from a bottling perspective, I'm not sure why'd you spend $6 on this when you get a sixer of Summerfest for a buck or two more.
