Notes / Commercial Description:
Brown Ale aged in used Pinot Noir barrels from local Sonoma County wineries. It is aged for about 12 months with sour cherries, brettanomyces, lactobacillus, and pediococcus added to each barrel. Flavors from the cherries, Pinot Noir and oak balance each other nicely with a little funk from the brett.

Batch 003

Poured into my Duval Tulip, lots of bubbles with a 2 finger white head. No lacing. Brilliant clear copper color when held to the light. You can see a little sediment but not much. Overall the beer looks clear with its golden copper color.

Vinegar is very dominant and the first aroma I can detect. I also smell some apple and a slight funk.

Taste is same as smell, tons of vinegar upfront but fades into sour apple or cherry. I can also taste the oak and I get a tart finish that lingers on the tongue. All around smooth the blend is balanced, not much complexity in this brew.

The carbonation is strong but helps with the vinegar taste, like a sparkling wine.

I don't have much to compare this to since this is my first attempt at this style. I have to say I enjoyed it considering this was totally different. It was very drinkable and especially nice with my cheese and crackers. I would have liked to have gotten a bit more sour apple/cherry flavors. I can't wait to try Temptation next!

Yetiman420 was kind enough to share this in his dazzling beer cellar - I wasn't expecting it, so thank you! It's people like him, that make me strive to be a beer advocate.

A loud, angry pop was heard as the cork flew off this one and hit the ceiling in his basement. Batch # 3 in the 375ml format.

Pours a slightly cloudy, light brown with a white, tightly compacted head. Good amoeba-like lacing up the side of my over-sized Duvel snifter and great head retention.

Smells of ripe, tart cherries, possibly some lightmalts and even a touch of nut brown nuttiness.

High, spicy carbonation as it hits my mouth, reminiscent of sticking pop rocks in your mouth! Sparkling mouthfeel. Slightly sweet and very crisp. Light bodied and unique medium to full flavored. Sourness is the predominant quality, but extremely smooth.

Very nice and worth the hype! Go out and try this!

Looks a murky brown/gold, like unfiltered apple cider. Head is small, but I made an admittedly gentle pour.

Smells fantastic. Wine, apples, vinegar. Beautiful.

Tastes of apples, sour goodness, other fruits dancing in the background, but very crisp. Incredible stuff.

Mouth is spot on, thin/med with relatively high carbonation.

They say sour is the new IPA. Well if this is the head of the sour class, count me in to the new school. May the beer gods bring Russian River to Western PA.

12.7oz bottle (Batch 3)

A: Pours a translucent amber with gold highlights. Nice fluffy off-white head recedes into a thin blanket and ring around the glass.

S: Apple cider vinegar, pears, oak, some funky mushroom/earthy aromas in the background.

T: Lots going on here. Similar to a flanders red style but lighter, smoother... flavors of red wine, oak barrel, cherries, maybe a bit of tobacco. Finish is tart with hints of vinegar, but composed. Very smooth, refreshing.

M: Fairly light, but pretty well carbonated with a almost a subdued champagne/sparkling texture. Huge POP when uncorking.

D: A sour thirst quencher for any day =P Really balanced wild ale/sour -- what have you. Would like to have more of these.

Summer 2008

Sampled while sitting on the patio in beautiful Bodega, Ca. Looking out at the Pacific Ocean. That's right. Listening to Mark Lanegan's "Bubblgum". Good times right here.

Poured from a 375ml bottle into a snifter. Pours out a rusty/amber color with a creamy tan/of white colroed head. The head stays around for quite some time. Not much lacing or webbing left on glass.

Smeels quite tart, fruity, funky, musty, yowza, brett.

This is something. Tart fruit & cherry, mouth puckering tartness, wine like complexity, bready malt, nice sweetness, noticeable wood character. The wood & tart/sour play nicely. Possibly the most complex beer I've had to date. I likey.

Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, dry, lingering sourness.

To say I enjoyed & savored every gulp would be an understatement. Worthy of the hype & kudos this brew gets.

Small creamy faintly pink head. Well carbonated. Cloudy rosy amber color. Smells like sour cherry pastry, earthy, yeasty. Starts very sour, puckery, tart. Sour enough to take your breath away. Finshes dry. Some white wine character in finish and aftertaste. Still very sour. Medium body. I want to like this more but sourness overpowers everything.

Reviewed on 9/25/08. Bottle courtesy of iowaherkeye (thanks Joey!). Pours a cloudy dark orange/light brown with a small tan head. Aroma of tart fruits (some apple, maybe cherry?) and oak barrel. Flavor is quite tart and sour with a small hint of the brown ale. Lots of wood and oak barrel. Some faint grape, wine-like notes in the finish. Superb mouthfeel for a sour. Very tasty and drinkable. I don't really get any cherry flavor from it though.

Batch #003 bottle poured into a snifter produced a finger worth white head that went to a good layer of lace. The body of the brew was interesting reddish brown/ amber, if that's a color

Aromas of sour cherries are really evident. Nice wood aromas as well as wonderfully funky yeast. It reminded me a lot of a Rodenbach

Flavors of a dry white wine and sour cherries this stuff is great. Light, crisp and dry in the mouth

Drinkability on a sour is a strange question; yes its drinkable but how much sours can one take. I'm glad I decided to crack this one open tonight I have been really missing the sours and it was easy to finish this bottle of myself

Batch #003. Split a bottle with Roberts at the Falling Rock Tap House in Denver during my trip last week. It wasn't on the beer list but we asked and lucked out. Poured from a 375ml cool shaped bottle into a snifter. The lighting wasn't great since a bar but looked ciderish in color and texture. Some carb and slight lacing. It had about a finger of white head that settled into a foam with collar.

The aroma was exceptional. I love sour beers and this one has the classic smell. No one does it better than RRBC. The brett really stands out. Also had wine undertones. The taste was also exceptional. Had a great sour bite with a slight dry finish. Absolutely perfect. The mouthfeel had the great sour bite with the tingling of the carb so a great mix.

Overall, a world-class beer that deserves to be so highly ranked. My mission in life is to find more of this beer - now! I could have just drank this all night but this ended up being the first in a classic night of beer drinking at Falling Rock. Most highly recommend - get one now....wait, don't get one as that would leave less for me.

Got this bottle from Santa (Prototypic), thanks for the opportunity. Batch 003 375ml

Pours a slightly cloudy orangey amber with a bubbly white head that sticks around forever. I can smell the sour from here while I'm pouring, yum. Upon closer inspection many layers reveal themselves to my nostrils. There's the sour funk, the cherries, the spicy Belgian yeast, bready malt. Just wonderful smelling really. Taste is sour lemons, limes, green apples, some cherries, a bit of acid. Any trace of malt or yeast gets buried in the sour while tasting. Sour fruits galore, but not overpowering. Incredibly drinkable. Very dry finish. Crisp Carbonation, medium body, Creamy dry mouthfeel. Wow this is good! One of the best I've had, although a little more cherry wouldn't hurt.

Got this as an extra from smellody!

Pours a golden/honey color, minimal beige head, but I poured slowly, as per the bottle's instructions. A few spots of lacing hanging in there. Smells of white wine, yeast, sour cherry. Taste is extremely sour, intense green apples and cherries, maybe some pear as well. Crazy puckering and drying mouthfeel. Certainly tasty, not a style I'm super familiar with, but I'm glad I got the chance, and would love to try this again in the future.

Batch 003 bottle poured into a tulip.

Pours a slightly hazy brownish amber with a bubbly off-white head that remains a cap throughout and leaves very good lacing.

The aroma is wonderfully complex with sour red cherries on a big bready malt base with hints of citrus, lemons especially. The wood character is evident as well and hints of funk as well, but not overpowering.

The taste is just as nice with a lip-puckering sour kick up front with cherries and bits of lemony funk. The background malts really support the sourness well and the finish is nice and dry with lots of wood and vanilla. The brett kicks it up a notch in the taste and makes the taste very nice all the way around.

The mouthfeel has clearly been influenced by the barrels as it is dry and wine-like in the finish. It's still nice and creamy with strong carbonation though.

This is a fantastic example of a style that I'm really not into. It says a lot that I really enjoyed this one despite my palate not quite being ready for sours yet. Get some now.

Sampled this one along side a Temptation, and this one was not my favorite of the two.

Supplication pours amber colored with a slight reddish tinge when held to light. Aroma is dominated by a strong musty character with perhaps a touch of cherry but not much. Mouthfeel is very dry and tart. Flavorwise, it it has a "clean" sourness (lacto-dominate?) with just a bit of cherry and almond. Displays less complexity than the best sour beers. I was expecting more cherry and funk.

Overall, worth a try but to me not among the very best of sour beers.

Batch 003 pours a semi-hazed caramel with a finger of cream colored head. Not much head retention & or lacing

S: Tart raspberry, hay, & barnyard funk

T: Much berry & apple tartness, barnyard, grassyness up front. Intense lemon tartness, & a smattering of grapefruit, plus some oaky dryness, as this warms. Finishes with tart cherry, bone dryness, a bit of booze tingle, & more dessicated lemon

MF: Puckery, fairly vigirous carbonation, flavors balance out nicely

Drinks pretty easy considering the tart & sour going on here. Not sure i could do more than 2 bottles of this, but certainly the best of this style in a bottle I've ever had. I must for sour beer freaks

Pours a cloudy orange color with 2 fingers white head and good lacing.

Scent of cherries, some yeast and a hint of breadiness. Scent is quite sour, but balanced balanced well.

Taste is very sour as well, cherries, some lemon and yeast start. Some oak comes in a it warms a bit. This one probably could have stayed in the cellar for a little longer.

Mouthfeel is clean and light.

This beer pours a slightly hazy orangish brown color, with a thin white head that fades quickly, leaving minimal lacing.

This beer has a nice sour aroma. Viniger, but not in a bad way. Some citrus fruit too. Some tart cherries. Very nice.

Wow, this beer is good. It is very tart and sour. I taste some sweet cherries. The wood make a slight appearence in the flavor. And some vinigery sourness.

This beer is highly carbonated. It leaves a sour aftertaste.

This beer would probably make a good session beer. It is pretty aggressive, but I think I could drink it all night. I would be able to taste the last one as much as the first, unlike extremely hoppy beers.

Overall: Batch 3. This beer is everything I was hoping for. I love it. This is exactly the way I wanted to celebrate the news I got today about being selected for advancement to E6. A perfect end to a great day.

Batch 003

A - Looks so good in the snifter. 1 finger of white suds atop a crystal clear, ruby red, ultra-effervescent body. Beautiful.

S - Brings back memories of Enigma. Oak, wine, sour cherries, cinnamon, Brett.

T - Incredible. Super tart cherries, dry, oaky finish, coupled with a puckering sourness. Tons of complex, Bretty/earthy notes peek in and sneak about during the drink. The more you drink of it, the more the subtle nuances come to the surface, such as the underlying brown ale, green sour apples, and spices. The thing is, it's a lot "cleaner" than a lot of the sours I've tasted prior. Vinnie really understands these wild little monsters.

M - Thinner, and crisp/sparkly. It's spot on.

D - Sourness is the only thing that could be considered a limiter. This beer is near perfect in every way.

Notes: Is it better than Enigma? Maybe. But is it worth the price of admission? Not so much. Enigma was like, $9 or $10 for a FOUR PACK. This was $15 I think? Crazy.

Regardless, I've been Supplicated.

A- Pours an amber brown with almost no head. The little head that does form dissipated very rapidly.

S- Brown sugar, sour cherries and brett hit the nose first. Notes of peppercorn and herbs.

T- Sour and tart with a mild sweetness. Brett and sour cherries are balanced by a caramel-like brown sugar taste. Notes of cranberry and white pepper. An herbal flavor is noted in the aftertaste.

M- Crisp, yet rich

D- Outstanding! This goes down exceptionally smooth and really balances the sour taste very well.

Acquired from mikesgroove courtesy of the I Want That IV BIF, so a big "Thank you" goes out to him. Poured from a 375ml bottle into a tulip glass.

A: The beer is a light reddish golden brown color, with a large off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is full of cherries along with some yeast, light malts and a touch of hops.

T: The taste is very tart and sour up front with a strong cherry flavor. There's a thin malt character and a mild hops presence. After-taste is also quite sour. If you're into the sour beers, this is a good one for you.

M: Smooth and very crisp, light body, medium carbonation, clean and dry finish.

D: Flavorful, goes down easily, not too filling, good kick, good representation of style, even though I'm not a big fan of the sour beers, I can appreciate the fact that this is a well-made beer. It's well worth drinking for a while if you're in the mood for the sour style.

Color is clear and reddish, with a small head that fades quickly. Some earthy scent and some, but less, earthy taste. Bright with carbonation, maybe even a little too much. The RR sour taste is nice and cleaner than many other sours. Burns all the way down to the stomach, which is the only thing that decreases drinkability.

Wow, another fantastic brew from Russian River. Pours a hazy orangish brown with a creamt light beige head. Good lacing.

The nose has the usual tart fruits over subtle malts, musky oak, red wine and ripe mountain cherries.

Taste also has a near perfect blend between the sweet, sour and funky flavors. The cherries and wine barrels are a very nice addition to this ale.

Crisp body and delicate carbonation fit the style perfectly. Like I said, another artisinal creation from Vinnie.

Poured from a 12.7 oz. bottle (Batch 003) received in a trade with Jw347 into a snifter.

Appears brownish orange in color with a one inch off-white head. A bit of spotty lacing is left behind.

Aroma is very tart, cherries are evident but not overpowering. Behind the sour is a nice sweet scent.

Taste is very sour at first and it kind of took me by surprise and gave me the chills. The sips afterward are still dominated by sourness reminiscent of tart cherries and granny smith apples. Tons of wonderfully funky flavors that I can't really describe. There's a woody taste that always seems to be slightly present. This stuff is tasty as hell.

Mouthfeel is medium with a very nice carbonation that allows the flavors to really show off their stuff.

By far the best sour I have tried, excellent. Looking forward to the bottle of Beatification I have in my fridge as well.

Thanks to orbitalrOx for sending me this. Enough with the thanking, let's get to the drinking.

Apricot caramel color. Huge white head. Tons of tiny bubbles. IT'S ALIVE!! This is one busy ass beer. The head tries to relax a little but the upward swell of bubbles keeps it going.

Mouth wateringly sour smell. Unable to pick out the particulars because I'm a maroon, but collectively speaking, this puppy is sow-wah!

Taste is Extra Sour. I'm talking pucker-fucker sour. Probably the best tasting sour outta the five or six I've tried. Sours are such a masochistic style. Like habanero salsa. First reaction is 'shit that hurts' and second reaction is 'give me some more.'

Again I'm at a loss to describe the feel of a sour. Too busy puckering, but I think I notice some carbonation. Finishes quite dry. Gives a certain flatulent feeling to the belly. Or that might be the raisin bran I had for breakfast. Either way, something wicked this way comes.

Overall: not everyday but makes for a rare treat

Had a bottle at The Trappist with waltonc. Like the beer a little better than him but have similiar comments

A: Light reddish color, hazy. Virtually no head nor lacing

S: Tart cherries. A mild funk in the background but it's very subtle

T/M: Exactly like it smells. Tart cherries. A little tarter than I remember. A little earthiness, probably from the Brett even though I don't know for sure what that tastes like. Medium bodied and dry. Really good stuff.

D: I really enjoy this beer and could probably drink a couple of glasses. But too many sours in one night has me craving malty sweetness soon thereafter.

An excellent beer. Like this the most of the RR sours.

Had a bottle of this at The Trappist yesterday. Reddish/orange in appearance. Smells like sour cherries, but there also seemed to be a metallic tinge to the smell that was off-putting. Taste was significant sour cherries. Fresh, tart, a little bit of funk. Fairly well balanced. The sourness is under control. Overall, very enjoyable and pretty drinkable.
