Pint Bottle

Bottled 7/8/08

I get the opportunity to try my first Blind Pig thanks to a recent trade with BrewerB, thanks a million Brian. Blind Pig pours deep golden with a just a bit of haze but fairly good clarity. When backlit this beer appears more straw golden and it really highlights the big carbonation bubbles that explode to the surface. A standard pour brought forth a two finger creamy white head that became ruddy and craggy as it settled to a solid crown. The head left sticky peaks and valleys of lacing on its way down the glass. The more beer that leaves the glass the better the lacing gets. Blind Pig is a good looking IPA.

Ahhh....Left Coast IPA all the way. A quick hit of pine kicks things off but the real showcase to the hop profile is the ripe juicy fruitiness. Ruby red grapefruit plays a big role as well but there is a surprising amount tropical citrus in here as well; mandarin oranges, tangerine, and papaya all make appearances. Then along comes a surprisingly grassy note before sugared grapefruit joins the mix. It smells to me like all pale malts were used in this beer and there is a very cake like maltiness giving this beer a solid backbone. Every time I stick my nose in the glass I'm greeted by a mouthwatering mix of wonderful hoppiness.

The flavor follows the aroma stride for stride and I love every second of it. Mildly sweet cake like malts start off the flavor profile but falls quickly to the wayside. A quick flash of pine hits right off the bat before all those delicious citric qualities take over. I'll save you the repetition and just say this beer is juicy. Big pine comes right back through and the final, lingering bitterness relies on the grassy aspect of the hop additions. This really is a delicious IPA. There is a great depth of flavor that keeps growing and growing.

The mouthfeel is exactly where it should be. The body is smooth and somewhat creamy with a moderate mouthfeel. The carbonation has enough oomph to help this beer work its way through and there's a solid bitterness left in its wake. The bitterness lingers on the back of the tongue and it's one of those enamel eater IPAs.

The big hoppiness, moderate body, and moderate abv all make for one hell of an easy drinker. One pint is simply not enough; a sixtel, maybe, but not a pint. This beer is semi-dry with a delicious hop profile that just continues to grow.

I've had my eye on Blind Pig for a couple years. I tried a few times to set up a growler trade with no luck so I'm glad this beer is finally bottled and I have the opportunity to try it in excellent condition. I wouldn't hesitate trading for this again and I like the fact it's bottled in pint bottles. The price would put a halt to buying as much as I'd like but it is a delicious IPA. Thanks again for the treat Brian!
