Copper-gold pour with a big, rocky, white head. Nice floral, citrus aroma with a great balance of caramel and biscuit malts. Dry, piny, grassy flavor with nice citrus notes and a well balanced biscuit and caramel malt profile. Creamy, medium body with very soft carbonation.

Was able to do a vertical - Blind Pig, Pliny the Elder, and Pliny the Younger:

A: Nice pale golden hue. A bit of frothy head that reduced down.

S: Smelled mildy hoppy, with a bit of ginger. Also stone fruit but not near as strong as the PTY.

T: Tasted like a nice IPA - but when compared to PTY and PTE, it is a rather watered down version. Not a spectacular taste but would go down quite well on a hot summer day. Nice baseball beer.

M: Nice carbonation, light flavors, light mouthfeel.

D: Went down just fine. Is a nice all-around IPA.

Pours an orangy color with a two finger head and nice carbonation.

Smell is juicy fruity hops, grapefruit, peaches, tangerine.

Taste is very nice up front, bitter toward the tail, leaves a hoppy bite in the aftertaste lingering on the palate. A bit grassy and some pine, a bit like pliny but has some differences too.

Very light bodied. A very well done single ipa.

Received in trade from saulcharlesworth, thx.

Nice creamy white head. Color is a light straw color with plenty of carbonation. Smells strongly of pine and citrus. First taste is a powerful and bursting mouthful of grapefruit. There is a lingering pine flavor which is not too bitter. The strong grapefruit taste fades in later sips, leaving a zesty pine flavor. Malt characteristic is barely noticeable. Finish is mild and not terribly bitter but slightly unpleasant and acidic. Overall, a nice example of an American IPA, if not my favorite.

Bottle courtesy of mashmaster...

Poured into my Duvel tulip a slightly hazy pale golden and slowly forms a 2 inch head that builds and lasts for some time...

Huge delicious aromas coming off of this one... Loaded with citrusy grapefruity hops and a touch of pine in the background...it smells a little medicinal as well... This ones gonna be bitter...

And I'm right....huge grapefruity hops up front that quickly and sharply turn bitter and they stay that way..its almost like a mouthfull of BC powder ... Wouldn't be so bad if it didn't linger and linger..

Well, I do like this but there are a lot of other IPAs that I would reach for first. Still, I'm super glad I finally got to try this one..

look: 4.5 | smell: 4 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 4 | overall: 4

Appearance - solid inch and a half of head. orange, minor amber and copper influence

Smell - hoppy of course, not as much as pliny but its dominate, minor citrus

Taste - like the smell, minor citrus actually seems more like grapefruit, bitter grapefruit, bittering hops. nicer as it warms up.

Mouthfeel - smooth, medium body for an ipa

im not that much into ipas, but rr's dont make me crazy about them either.

Growler. Pours a clear light orange with hardly any head. Aroma of citrus hops, crackery malt, and grassy hops. Flavor is bitter initially with citrusy notes in the finish. This is much better than the bottle version I had previously -- the malt base stands out better and the hops are not so bitter. Nice and supremely drinkable. I definitely joined this more the second time around.

Nearly three fingers of off white head turns rocky and leaves considerable lace as it slowly fades. This nose is very fragrant with oily citrus and even noticeable mellon with a backround spike of pickled pine. Body is a hazy orange amber wheat gold thing going on. On first sip I find this considerably thinner than I was expecting. Hops play more of a backround role on the initial flavor profile. Hop profile is of citrus rind and rustic soft pine. Bitter feel does develop more as you drink but it is more of a mouthfeel as each additional sip douses the bitter. Mouthfeel is only a soft bitter hue. This beer is nicely drinkable, it just lacks some of the attributes of other great IPA's.

Pours a pale gold colour with a saffron tinge. Head is modest, with off-white hue, sinks to a thin film and leaves a few light trails of lace. Slow bead and light cloud in the body. Looks alright, nothing particularly special.

Smell is lovely and sweet with a great fresh hoppy edge. Very cakey malt with caramel and a lot of citrus tang and pineapple. Orange/lemon zest in mild intensity, but lots of it. Very appealing aroma indeed.

Taste is slightly disappointing after that. Fair cake batter malt on the front, with nice fresh hops backing up immediately on the mid, giving citrus and some rubber notes. Bitterness starts midway and is a bit dour, lacking in the freshness suggested by the nose. Definite rubbery edge with some soil notes and pine resin as well. Also feels a bit un-nuanced, so it just sort of falls flat, almost like a deflated hop flavour giving dull, blunted bitterness without a lot of complexity. For its flaws though, not bad.

It doesn't help that the texture is a bit thin overall. Picks up towards the end with a gently massaging fizz, but not enough for me to forget the thinness.

Pretty good drinking beer, but could have been better.

not sure why this one is so hyped up. was dying to try it, finally did, and was rather unimpressed as far as russian river goes. to me, pliny is just such a better beer, more hops, better feel, more alive. this one pales in comparison in almost every respect. same color but maybe a little less sediment and a little less carbonation than the pliny. less resinous nose, although the hops appear to be equally fresh and pungent. citrus notes and pine notes in equal proportion, although this isnt oily at all. bitter finish after a balanced american style pale ale. lighter biscuity malt doesnt overshadow the hops, but the flavors just arent as forward and assertive as the pliny. i know its a different beer entirely, and i shouldnt compare like this, but i couldnt help thinking the whole pint that this was the inferior little brother. good feel, crisp finish, plenty bitter, drinkable as hell, but just not a standout to me. especially since we all know what russian river is capable of. good ipa, not memorable for me. ill try it again in the future though.

Edit: I get it now! Fresh from the tap at the brewery itself, this is one of the best IPAs there is, it's a grapefruit smack in the jaw, and is fantastic. As bright and potent as any beer in the game. Bumping up the score a bit based on that experience, but this doesn't travel or hold up at all in my view. Wow though from the brewery!

Poured from 500ml bottle into pint glass. Tasted side-by-side w/ PtE.
Bottled on 7/18/11.

Aroma: Light herbal, grassy hops. Aromatic hops accompanied by graham cracker, hay, and honey sweetness. Aroma is much more restrained than expected.

Appearance: Golden body w/ a very sligt hint of orange. Very slight chill haze. White head disappears somewhat quickly. Minimal lacing.

Flavor: Dank "hemp", herbal, medicinal hop flavor. Just enough sweetness present, but which eases into a strong, lingering bitterness at the finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-low carbonation. Medium-light body. Some smooth creaminess, followed by slightly drying, tannins.

Overall: Definitely a tasty one. Came across as a bit on the light side (aroma & flavor), but that can be expected when drinking Blind Pig side-by-side w/ PtE. A pretty tasty IPA to enjoy earlier on in a session!

Appearance - Clear golden with spotty steady head.

Smell & Taste - Caraway seed. Dry and lean. Nice hop balance with malt. Metallic too. Finish has a bite similar to a North German style Pilsner.

Mouthfeel & Drinkability - Both are interesting. Mouthfeel is grain and malt dissolving into hoppiness. Drinkability is good again due to metallic bite in the finish.

500 ml brown bottle, bottled on 7-9-08

pours an amber color with a small white head and only scant lacing

smell is green floral citrus hop flavor

taste is up front bitter citrus pith, some mild palate malt with a floral bitter finish. not as "green" tasting as PtE

mouthfeel is creamy and oily, very coating.

easier to drink alone than pliny but would not hold up as well to spicy food.. but would still hold up enough quite likely. more sessionable than pliny, but they both have their place.

Who wears a boy tie anymore? Pours a mostly cloudy orange color with a more light tan hue through out. A good fizzy white head which settles down after some time. Good retention and lacing.

The nose is more along the lines of a west coast ipa. Nice herbal and citrus notes mixes well with a stronger piney hop note. Some nice fruity notes, grapefruit and a touch of pineapple. Some lighter notes of malt, mostly grainy and a touch of kettle caramel as well. Some alcohol but not over the top. Pretty clean yeast overall.

The taste is similar. Nice hop presence with a hint of bittering. Would have like a bit more balance but the finishing hops leaves a piney and citrus twist into the finish. Some soapy and kettle hop notes into the finish that is a bit of a deterrent. The malt falls off though, with a more muttled grainy and non-distinct sweetness. Really would have liked more complexity and clarity there. Some yeasty note but nothing over the top.

The body is a bit sweet and would like it to be a bit smoother. Carbonation is a bit low, which could help out. Overall a decent IPA with a great hop presence, but IMO really lacks the distinct malt backing to make it a great beer. Good drinkability though.

Appearance- Body is a light gold color with hints of a rich honey color. Continually effervesces. Head is a small, tight white affair with no retention but decent lacing.

Aroma- Good, strong hoppy aroma, with lots of citrus and pine coming though. A hint of malt in the background.

Taste- Mmmmm...Hoppy....arghghgh (said in Homer Simpson voice). Seriously, Good strong hop backbone with some citrus and piney notes in the taste (more subdued than the nose). Some malt sweetness comes through, but not much.

Mouthfeel- Medium body, but a bit on the heavy, sticky side. Leaves a nice lingering aftertaste. CO2 level is just right. The beer continues effervescing hop resins all the way down your gullet.

Drinkability- This ain't the hoppiest beer in the world, but any hop-head should enjoy it. Quite frainkly, it should have a little more maltiness and malt sweetness, but this stuff ain't bad.

Had as part of a heavenly beer sampler at the brewery.

This one came to me with a thin layer of foam atop a clear yellow body. The head persisted for a little while.

Aroma was grapefruit, grapefruit, and more grapefruit. That was all I got. As a hophead, I appreciated this.

Taste followed aroma... a huge blast of grapefruit hops that made me shudder at first. Not that this was a shudder of dislike... in fact I loved it. But sometimes, even something pleasurable can take you by surprise when it just jumps in your face and hits you with both fists.

Mouthfeel was puckering, but good.

Drinkability was good... I could have gone for a pint of this rather than the 2 ounce sample. However, I don't know if I could take more than a bomber of this stuff in one sitting.

Very good beer. It is bitter but very drinkable. Most of the reviews are spot on. Good beer but no Pliny.
I think this a great hoppy IPA and would compare it to similar IPA's from Northern California- Stone comes to mind.
Give it a shot but at 6.00pt I thought it not quite the value.

I dig the label...."Don't age me!"

I had this right after I drank the Surly Furious. Going from a huge bodied IPA to a sessionable IPA was not a good idea...

pours a golden color with a quickly fading white head. great lacing. the nose is floral and spicy hops. the taste is very bitter, bitter hops, floral hops, subtle sweet malts. medium to full body, medium spritzy carbo. good brew...

A slightly hazy orange with a small but sticky white head.
Smells mostly of citrus hops, grapefruit, a little pineapple with a mild malt backbone.
Taste is very citrusy with a funky, earthy note in the middle and finish. Very strange and not something I'd expect from an IPA. Slightly sweet yet bitter and dry in the finish.
Feels dense and creamy with slight, tight carbonation.
This is probably better right out of the tap. My bottle was a few months old.

500ml bottle poured into Founders snifter. Big thanks to DeanoMac for this one. Bottled 7/28/12, less then 3 weeks ago.

A- Pours a slightly hazy slightly brownish orange golden. About a quarter of a finger of white foamy bubbly head that has decent retention but eventually fades to almost no head. Slightly below average carbonation.

S- Citrus orange hops, a little bit of grapefruit, some mangoes, about average aroma strength.

T- Orange hops, light lemon, some grapefruit, a little bit tangy, finishes with a light hop taste that is fairly bitter and a tiny bit of booze. Light orange, lemon, grapefruit aftertaste. Nice citrus taste, but finishes a little bit too bitter for my taste.

M- Medium to slightly light bodied, easy to drink, average carbonation.

O- This was a decent IPA, but definitely not one of my favorites especially from Russian River. I enjoyed this beer however it didn't have the flavor that I was hoping it would have and finished a tiny bit too bitter for my liking. I recommend trying this beer out, but I wouldn't say it's a must have.

Enjoyed on-tap at Monk's in Philadelphia, PA at 2/28 Russian River tasting event.

A: Pours a nice, light orange color. Minimal head and lacing on the glass. Mild carbonation. Not too much bubbling. Clean looking beer.

S: Nice hop profile in the nose, but nothing greatly overpowering. I get some floral hops and a malt backbone. Doesn't jump out and bite you though.

T: Good floral and citruy hop flavor with a nice clean finish. Malts are mild but there. Just a really nice clean IPA.

M: Clean, crisp, and easy drinking. Doesn't coat the mouth much. Watery.

D: I had two that day, and could have gone on. at 6% ABV you could easily session this brew.

Overall, the Pig doesn't disappoint but it isn't Elder or Younger catagory. I would definitely enjoy this brew agin in the future.

Figured I was due for a revisit and frankly I'm not certain if I have ever had this on out of a bottle. Bottle on date is 090710. Or three days under a month old.

A: Bright light orange honey colored and pretty darn bright. Though there is a little bit of a haze present. Bone white head which a pancake batter like consistency.

S: Funky weird hop aroma going on. Skunk weed and evergreen. Resinous for sure.

T: Piney bitterness right off the bat but not overwhelming. Burnt orange peel followed with a malty cereal like quality.

M: Tingly and sticky.

D: High.

I missed this while at Russian River last year. I've had the opportunity to have this in the bottle, and on tap at three different locations.
Appears a hazy light gold with a small white cap that slowly fades into a mild cap that never fades away. Spotty bits of lacing are left around the glass.
Smell is of super hop juice, citrus, grapefruit, pine, herbs, and black pepper.
Taste is a big drop off with the flavors. From the samples I've had, it just seems to be a bit watered down. It's a let down from getting excited with the kick-ass aromas to actually getting to taste it.
Mouthfeel is bitter, medium bodied, citrusy, with a bitter finish.

Bottled on 1-11-11. Poured into a Darkness snifter.

Pours a lazy golden orange hue. About a half inch of head. Pretty minimal lacing. What a wonderful smelling beer. Sweet floral and pine. Citrus and hop aroma mixed in the bunch too. Delightful. The taste isn't quite like it smells. Kinda medicinal actually. The carbonation and hop hit your tongue immediately but then then left with a slightly off, kinda medicinal flavor. It's not bad though. As it warms the taste opens up a bit more. It is slightly muted over all though. The carbonation is very good and goes down well enough. I'd like to take on a slightly fresher example of this and compare my notes.
