Taster at brewery. Dark amber with small ring of head. Soft, fruity aroma, Brett. Taste is smooth and sweet, mildly tart. Subdued, but complex. This is what sours should be. Simple and clean, approachable.

Let me first say I don't like sours but I'm trying to see if I can develop a taste for them. This review more reflects my particular taste of the style than where this beer fits inside the style. This is a nicely complex beer and I would recommend to anyone who likes sour ales.

Bottled 3/27/2017

Color is beautiful, dark brown orange, head is whispy and dissipated quickly. Smell is very complex and interesting, definitely enticing. The taste is complex as well, hints of oak, fruit from the currant slightly citrusy balsamic vinegar, some malty bread character but dominated in the middle and end with sour, tart funk. The mouth feel is very carbonated which comes from the bottle conditioning. It's makes it extra bubbly but also nearly insubstantial on the palate and fills your stomach like a stressed balloon. I feel more full than I should.

Overall I like the complexity but still have a hard time accepting the sour funk from the wild yeast. I'm not really sure why someone wants to subject themselves to it, but I'm hopeful I can develop a taste over time or at least find a beer I'm more in tune with.

Just a knock down, drag out good beer. Maybe I am getting cynical over today's craft beer culture or nostalgic over chasing this beer, but hands down it sets the standard for American sour beer.

The best part about this beer is the body. So many sours are too thin and lack the sweetness to balance out the tart. Most breweries try to compensate for the sour by adding in a ton of sweet fruit, but RR balances their beers with hearty malt backbones and unfermentable sugars that round out the mouthfeel and tartness at the same time. The 10% abv puts this in a league of its own.

No, its not the best or most forward thinking sour, but it doesn't try to be. It is the most balanced "extreme beer" there is and it is a real treat to drink.

This beer pours a deep purple with a minimal, quickly dissipating head. The aroma is heady and intense, with a strong acetic sour notes, as well as sour cherry jam, blackberry jam, black currant jam, with hints of fig, and graham cracker. The flavor is intense and incredibly complex, with the black currant coming through very strongly, and then a tannic burst that is enormously wine like. There is a chutney tinged, vinegar flavor to the middle, and an almost smoky finish. The mouthfeel is light with bold, bright carbonation. Overall this is an astonishing beer. Probably the best sour I have ever had.
