Shared a bottle with kfsv034.
A- Poured into a Duvel tulip, pours a dark brown-red color. Initial couple inch head, then quickly disappears. It fizzes almost like coke. THe looked and everything reminds me of Coke.

S- Sour, not much tart. I get vinegar with some dark fruits. Wine characteristics.

T- Take the smell and exaggerate it and thats what u get in the taste.

M- Very thin, but not in a bad way. Just compared to other 10% beers its just thin. I think its appropriate for the beer though. it fits.

D- For a 10% sour, its pretty damn drinkable. I think the the thin mouthfeel contributes to this.

Poured into snifter. Bottle date 2-11-14. Excited for this one, here we go!
A-beautiful dark red without any head. Almost exactly matches the color of the label.
S- cherries, vanilla, musky funk, oak
T-sour cherries, vanilla, chocolate, fizzy carbonated funk, dark fruits
M- light to medium, fairly fizzy. No head.
O- so well balanced. I don't normally enjoy sours but this is easy to drink and delicious.

Wow! Awesome ruby color, thin lacing for a head, some cherry and currant aromas. Slight pucker, dark stone fruit flavors, but amazing finish that is dry and melts away the sourness. Manages to have a fizzy and light mouthfeel without too much tartness. Reminds me of La Folie, but I think this trumps it based on how smooth it finishes.

A - Dark brown, clear, with a quickly dissipating tan head.
S - Dried fruit, tobacco, barnyard (brett funk). More fruit comes out as it warms. Some vinous aromas as well.
T - Sour, "sweaty", cherries, oak, some notes of sherry and vanilla.
M - Full bodied and dry. Typical for a sour.
O - One of the best American sours, bar none. Give me another pint.

On tap at RR - still have two bottles aging at home. Looking forward to that opening ceremony.

Appearance - Reddish brown, mahogany, with a minor off white head - very little retention or lacing, but the brew itself looks mighty inviting.

Smell - Ripe cherries, dark wine, strong fruit smells with a little bit of sparkling wine.

Taste - Very dark ale with champagne aftertaste - cherry, lambic sourness, but not overpowering because it is balanced well by cabernet highlights.

Mouthfeel - Slight carbonation tingle but still retains the attractive dark ale smoothness.

Drinkability - More of a treat than a session beer, but don't pass this one up if you can get it on tap, or aged for 1+ years.

375mL bottle of Russian River Consecration - batch number 7.

Appearance: Consecration pours a burnt maroon color with a thin, whispy white head and a relatively translucent body despite the bottle conditioning.

Smell: the Cabernet Sauvignon barrels really come through in the nose; theres a strong, unmistakable smell of red wine. I was expecting the brettanomyces to be a little more pronounced, but it wasn't really contributing much to the aroma on this one.

Taste: undeniably tart, yet not mouth puckering. The bacteria (lactobacillus and pediococcus) impart this souring flavor, yet seem to play well with the addition of currants as well as the lingering Cabernet Sauvignon components. The high ABV imparts a nice warming sensation, but isn't really perceptible otherwise.

Mouthfeel: Consecration is medium bodied and finishes with a wine-like dryness.

Overall: an interesting beer to be sure, and the only barrel aged offering from Russian River I've ever had (Supplication and Temptation are in the fridge). It was certainly enjoyable, but I wasn't really blown away.. And I'm not sure if I'd be willing to buy it online again and eat the cost of shipping. Now if I lived in California it would probably be a different story.

Part V of epic RR tasting including Tempt, Sancti, Beati, Suppl, and Consec. I've had this one before, but having it at the end of this tasting makes it all the better.

Appearance is dark red with very little head. The smell is bourbon, cherries, vanilla, and raspberries. As good as the smell is, the taste is quite a letdown - lemons, sour grapes, slight biscuit, bitters, and booze; really though, none of these flavors meld into anything too good. The drinkability is fair, but the sourness and the overall blandness of the taste makes one glass of this beer just plenty.

375ml bottle poured into a Duvel Tulip

A: If you look at the label on the bottle, that is damn near close to what the body of this beer looks like. Dark-amber brown body with slight velvet hues on the edges that you would see in a Cabernet. Small off white head is produced. Little head retention and no lacing.

S: Sweet currents paired with sour red grapes, apples with hints of cherry, oak and Brett. The Cabernet Sauvignon is really coming through nicely paring well with the currents. You can smell a slight tartness.

T: Pretty fantastic array of flavors that hit your tongue from beginning to end. Sweet fruity tastes paired with a decent amount of tartness. Cherry and grape are the stand outs along with Cabernet and hints of oak.

M: Light to medium bodied with a great amount of carbonation. Smooth, very smooth.

O: A fantastic beer that I can't believe I have left sitting on the shelves all these times. I have always been skeptical of the price for these but now i know they are the real deal. Will be coming back multiple times for this.

750ml into NB Snifter

Appearance=Poured a big 2 finger head, which quickly dissipated. Redish, black beer with a lot of carbonation.

Smell= Awesome! Oak, Cab, green apples, yeast.

Taste= Awesome! Sour, yet not overpowering. Very, very tasty!

Mouthfeel= Thin side, good carbonation and a lively mouthfeel. Almost perfect...

Drinkability= High. Extremely good. Alcohol is hidden nicely. Taste is awesome. Nose is awesome. What more could you want?

Poured into a Stone RIS. Not sure on batch, but I am pretty sure it was the most recent one to date.

A: Pours a reddish-brown, translucent, with no foam.

S: Smells of barnyard funk, red win, and plums.

T: sour cherries and red wine, barnyard funk, with hints of vanilla and oak.

M/D: very little carbonation, medium body. Fruity and sour. I drank this after a cantillon rose de gambrinus, and I knew this was good, but it was tough for the Consecration to follow the Cantillon.

Batch 001 on tap at Capone's

A: Pours a very dark brown with a cherry hue. The head is ivory to tan colored, and leaves a thick lacing on the walls of my glass.

S: Funk up front, leaning towards barnyard, not much leather. The signature 'Tion aroma follows the funk. The currant and raisins wrap up the nose and give it a nice balance.

T: The funk and sour are muted compared to the nose. There fruit flavors are muted a little, but what has seemed to have faded the most over time is the funkiness. More recent batches have a more pronounced flavor.

M: Medium bodied, with nice prickly carbonation, and a lingering sourness.

D: This is a great beer, but not as good as fresher batches, IMO.

Poured from a 750mL corked and caged bottle (Batch 001X2) into a snifter.

A: Dark amber with one and a half fingers of tan head. Dissipates into a small ring.

S: Tart cherries, vinegar, oak.

T: Oak and tannins like a cabernet with the added punch of brett.

MF: Medium bodied, but VERY tart!

D: Slow drinking due to the mouth-puckering tartness. Still managed to finish the whole bottle over the course of an evening though. Very tasty!

A: Pours a reddish caramel with a fair bit of tan foamy head initially which rapidly dissipates.

S: Oak dominates, but there are also notes of red currant, caramel, and a touch of alcohol heat.

T: Strong burst of sweetness quicly overtaken by a lactic tartness. This fades into an astringency with notes of oak and vanilla.

M: Thin, but also a bit syrupy. Very sharp on the palate.

O: It has a depth of flavor that is much more interesting than many in this style. These different flavors play off of each other well enough that it doesn't overpower you with any one of them.

A - reddish brown, 1st pour was very clear, though the bottom definitely had some murkiness

S - a very pungent sour smell

T - sour cherries, a hint of wine flavors. id note that i originally drank 1 from this same batch 1 year ago and the wine notes are much more pleasant and mellow than they i remember

M -tannin-like mouthfeel, tart though again mellower than i remember

O - a phenomenal sour if you like sours, a nice blend that blends the best of wines and beers

beautiful deep reddish brown in a tiny snifter. Bubbly and more bubbly. Smells of the currants with some sour notes. On tasting, bubbles attack every exposed part of my mouth, giving birth to a flavor explosion. Is it wine? ale? sour? wood? Delcicious. Best of all, for having a such great, complex taste, it doesn't kill your palate. This my favorite of the Russian River 'tion beers. It's a good beer to give a swill drinker a taste of, exposing them to what's possible with a little creativity and experimentation.

I had this beer on-tap at the Russian River Brewing Company in Santa Rosa, CA in August 2010 as part of a sampler of the beers they had on-tap that day.

The beer was amber in color and smelled of berries and spice. The beer's alcohol content was well-hidden in this beer. It was tart, but no strong bitter aftertaste.

This beer is very different from its counterparts Damnation and Supplication and I would rank it second amongst the three. I would definitely recommend this beer-so good! Enjoy!

Pours dark brown, mostly clear body, head settles quickly. Smells sour and funky. Tastes sour and has nice notes of currants and Cabernet Sauvignon. Palate is alive and bubbly. Overall much better than the first time I tried this 3 years ago. Highly recommended.

Draft, poured into a wine glass.

Appearance: ruby brown and clear, with a light tan head that fades quickly to a thin veil. Very small bubbles; spritzy. I know you can't judge a book by its cover, but this is a beer, and from this beer's appearance, I knew it would be good.

Aroma: stone fruit and sour.

Taste: nice and sour. Tart, but not mouth puckering so. Tartness is upfront, which fades to a dry finish at which point the Brett funk arrives. The Brett funk is subdued. I can't detect any of the currants. The beer is wonderfully smooth for being 10% ABV. No alcoholic warmth.

Mouthfeel: light-medium.

Overall: this is probably the highest rated beer I've tried. Honestly, I think this beer is overhyped. It is good - very good - but not deserving a BA score of 4.5/5.0. Of the sours I've tried recently, I prefer (in order) Crooked Stave Sentience, Trinity Red Swingline and Boulevard Love Child #3 (cellared 1 year).

A- Well you cant knock color, red, light carbonation and clear.
S-clear brett and cranberry fruit smells
T- much more tart than I expected. The fruit balances nicely but it does seem a little harsh. The bacteria comes through but it com9letely covers up the belgian yeast strain it starts with.
O- A must have for a sour lover, not a great introductory sour. Ill take any bottle up for grabs, it sucks.

A 750mL corked and caged bottle purchased from Matt at Capone's in Norristown. Poured into my Sam Adams perfect pint because, well, it was the only clean glass I had.

Appearance: A pop of the cork and a slow pour into my glass reveals a dark, ruby red colored brew. Very dark, almost black, but not quite as you could pick up the blood colored hues in the light. Only light I see coming through is around the outside of the glass. A tan/brown head develops, about a fingers worth, fizzy like soda or seltzer water, which relatively quickly recedes to a thin layer on top of the beer.

Smell: Funky. Fruity. I could pick up the currants that the bottle indicates are in there, as well as some oak sweetness. Maybe some other dark fruit aromas? Sweetness from the Cabernet Sauvignon/Oak barrels it was aged in comes through as well, it's probably the most predominant smell I pick up.

Taste: Very sour. Puckering, malicious sour flavor, but that's a good thing. This might be the most sour beer I've had. I get a touch of fruity sweetness before the sourness takes over. Once the sour subsides, it's a sweet oaky, red wine flavor, and this is where the currants come through. As the beer warms, the sourness dissipates slightly and the back end of the sip becomes a lot sweeter, and the currant and other fruit flavors become much more predominant.

Mouthfeel: Pretty light. Very fizzy on the tongue. Very puckering. In fact, after swallowing each sip, my mouth would still involuntarily pucker from the residual sourness. Pretty cool.

Drinkability: Wouldn't mind if this was in a 375mL or a 22oz'er. Delicious beer, but the more it warms the more I had to labor through it. Certainly a treat though.

This was my first RR Sour beer, and it has inspired me to seek out their others.

Batch #004x4. Bottled on 3/25/09. Drank on 6/22/10. Poured into Duvel tulip.

A: Deep ruby body with quickly dissipating head. Very active carbonation. No lacing whatsoever.

S: Very woody, bretty aroma---the funk here is very nice! There's a pervading dark fruit aroma that must be from the currants---seems like raisins and cherries. There's a slight vinegar aroma lingering also.

T: There's a lot going on here and it's changing with each sip. There's no doubt about the barrel-aging here---lots of oak. The brett (again) is very nice and raisins, dates, cherries, plums and even a touch of lemon. Through all this I'm even getting some of the yeast. No perceived alcohol whatsoever.

M: I would say that the mouthfeel is thin to medium. The beer actually coats the palate somewhat but I wouldn't say that it's 'thick' by any means. Just right for the style.

D: Well, at 10% abv I'm not perceiving any alcohol and the 'sourness' is by no means 'over the top' so put me down for a few more. Very drinkable!

I haven't had alot of sours so I'm no expert but this was a very enjoyable glass of beer. The science behind these sour ales really amazes me. Thanks RR!

Batch 003x1

A - Poured into my NB tulip glass. Dark amber/brown in color. The head fades quickly with a pool of carbonation forming in the center, bubbling for the duration of the drink

S - Sharp oak smell with hints of the currants present

T - A very sharp, sour initial taste. Currants, grapes, and oak taste on the back end once the sour fades.

M - Completely amazing. Resonates throughout the mouth, touching every spot long after swallowing. Your taste buds literally pulsate for a few seconds after a good swirl.

D - Better with every sip. For a sour it goes down well and does not fade, opening up as it gets warmer.

Batch 007

Pours a dark ruby bordering on maroon. What little head there was dissipates right away. Not super inviting but I'm not at all familiar with sours.

Smell is very pleasing if you like wine. Smells much smoother than a mediocre bottle of cab (I'm talking cheap mediocre...not sommelier mediocre). I get a lot of oak and spicy notes. Dark fruit and funkiness.

Sourness is present right away and lingers well into the finish. In between there's bright and tart cherry. As it warms there are very nice oak notes that come out. Some tobacco.

Mouthfeel...The RR website tells me its full bodied but I would call it medium. The sourness may be throwing off my perception but that's how it seems to me.

Overall...Not my cup of tea. The beer might've been too young, and I don't know anything about aging sours or the style in general. It's not too harsh or intense. Just not pleasant to me. Gonna stick to PtE for now, but I'm glad I tried it. Any insight to sours is welcome through beermail.

Cork and Caged bomber bottle.

A: Strong vibrant carbonation, head clings to the glass, crimson in color.

S: Oak, tart, strong raison presence, vanilla, slight mustiness in the end.

T: Begins with a warming nuttiness, oak, cream and cherry comes through in the middle, sour completes the drink.

M: At first taste it stings slightly, then warms the palate, the alcohol is there yet it is muted.

D: When in the mood for a sour I would enjoy a big bottle or two, it is delicious.

Picked these up on the Consecration/ PTY release day.

A- Outstanding ruby reddish dark brown color with a frothy tan head on it.

S- i think i am wine tasting, very strong red wine hint here, little funky and definently going to make you pucker!!

T- Great, I have had all but the ultra rare RR sours and this is my favorite right there with beatifacation, This offering bring so much more to the table, Starts sweet fruit wine and leaves you sour and dry, tons of changes here.

M- High carb and all else it what is to be expected.

D- Love it, i could have 2 750s easy, great sipper that improve as it warms.

Overall, great RR offering that i will be stocked up on for a while if i can resist the temptation to drink, so far i am not doing good and at $25 a bottle i cannot afford any more!!
