Notes: Row 2 Hill 56 is a pale ale brewed with 100% Simcoe hops selected from the three original Simcoe-growing families in Yakima, WA, referenced on the front of this label. We have forged not only long-lasting partnerships but friendships with these families and cherish our annual visits during the hop harvest each fall. Row 2 Hill 56 has a classic Simcoe aroma with notes of grapefruit and pine with a lingering hoppy finish.

perhaps one of the finer american pales happening right now. i can recall very few that do what this one does, which is showcase a hop varietal brilliantly, without being filling, boozy, or tiring. this is so clean and light on the palate, golden in color and frothy to the feel. the hops are simcoe i think, but its such a delicate usage. not delicate in flavor, they are dripping resins and citrus notes, but they never get heavy or bitter like they sometimes do in other beers, quite often really. i never miss the bitterness here, and i dont wish for a more complex grain bill. i think its straightforward nature is impressive. not trying to cover flaws with tons of esoteric grains or anything, its just perfectly made beer. there are a few pales i like as much, but not one i can think that i really like better or would prefer to have a steady stream of, this is top tier.

Beautiful brew: orange/amber, slight haze, great head retention. Hoppy aroma (citrus/pine).

Incredible balance and touch. Lots of hops, but not at all overwhelming, and a creamy base to the malts. There's no major alcohol presence, but it drinks much bigger than its modest ABV.

A really excellent APA. I think this deserves consideration alongside the best APAs in the business.

July 27th, 2015 - I'm losing track of where we are in the tasters now, but Row2Hill distinguishes itself with an umami rich aroma of mushrooms. Earthy yet hoppy, it also has the smell of raw banana peppers, making it slightly herbaceous at the same time that it features some soil scent. The mouthfeel is fuzzy and filling, letting a clean hoppy flavor come through. The aftertaste echoes long after the sip, with a lemony zest and low-key hop bitterness. Biscuit and light, the balance here is superb. I'm not to the Pliny yet, but this seems worthy of setting at its left or right hand.

Love this brew, another quintessential classic from RR. Pours a nice rich light copper color with a lite white head that wisps away quickly. Classic west coast pale ale. The 100% smicoe hopping makes it even better!

Picked up a growler at the Beatification release, poured into a pint glass

As I popped the nicely fit, flip-top growler, reams of pine and grapefruit aromas flood the nose, presumably due to simcoe hops. The bouquet pops with pine and citrus tones, backed by gritty resin and honey-sweet pastries. As it pours it appears orange-tan, clear and bubbly - the festive appearance supports the huge bouquet.

The flavors follow, with resin-y pine and citrus-tropical flavors coating the palate. The hops turn floral as they're met by toffee-sweet malts, while subtle earthy tones and notes of lemon are detected. The flavors are big, but they dry toward the finish and leave little aftertaste.

The beer is like an IPA up front, but feels lighter and finishes without a lot of sticky residue. This actually has a really similar flavor profile as Pliny the Elder...just turned down a notch. It's like PtE's little bro. Could it be the most session-able pale I've encountered? Right up there. Hope to have this again.

Inch tall white head on a golden orange. Head never fully recedes. Sticky lacing.

Bitter citrusy hops on the nose.

Well balanced...malt backbone can stand up to the floral citrusy hop assault. Tasty!

Medium mouthfeel, seemingly low carbonation for the style.

Big time flavor on a microscopic abv'ed beer. Highly drinkable. Another winner from Russian River. Thanks kawilliams82.

Had on draft two successive days on a visit to CA. The first time I tried it I didn't know the ABV and guessed that it was around 7%, not because you could taste alcohol, but because there was so much flavor. Hop forward with plenty of citrus, missing some of the pineyness that I expect from west coast ales and substituting tropical and earth notes, riding a sufficient and perfectly complimentary malt backbone. I find single hop beers to have more personality than usual, and not always in a good way, but here RR nails it. I've almost stopped drinking pale ales because they are less interesting to me than IPAs, but this is one I sorely wish was available locally.
