On my vacation to Cali, possibly the most important beer stop was our hour drive north of San Francisco to Santa Rosa, home of Russian River. The Sunday I chose ended up being the perfect time to do it as apparently Sundays are all-night happy-hour discounts!

When we arrived at our destination of choice after crossing the Golden Gate Bridge and passing beautiful country-side, we parked right out front which seemed very lucky. Unbeknown to me, we didn't have to pay for parking on a Sunday. A smoking patron of Russian River made that clear to me after my money was already in the digital meter. I'd pay for parking again even if I didn't have to NO PROBLEM for the experience we had there.

Even for the Sunday night, it was packed with people. We walked in the building, unassumingly nestled in between two other places in a strip mall. Outdoor seating flanked the entrance and once inside, it was a lot to take in. Giant labeled burlap hop bags hung from the ceiling on the walls as well as in between the wooden structural support poles going up to the ceiling in the center.

To the left was a room separate from the main area. To the right was a live band already into their set. We popped a squat at a table in front of the band and stared in amazement at the giant chalkboard above the bar. It displayed all possible information about the famed and rare beers brewed at Russian River with American styles on the left side and Belgian to the right.

I faced the back wall and stared at the merch hanging above the sound board for the band and the entrance to the kitchen. I was close to getting a Damnation hoodie until I realized it was almost $50 and didn't have that much to drop on the last leg of our vacation. Instead I purchased a bottle of Damnation and Temptation for almost $30 when we were ready to leave.

Anyway, back to our time there. Bewildered at all the options, we stared with a couple beers, shared them, then got another round. Salads arrived at our table nice and crisp just before our Margarita pizza did. It was orgasmic to say the least. After the pizza filled us up we continued to jam to the live band next to a skinny ZZ Top-looking guy. He had a full beard to his mid-torso, sunglasses (at night) and a cowboy hat on. Classic.

I finally pulled the trigger on a beer sampler and chose the Belgian side. Every beer (except the one they were out of) arrived on a giant wooden platter with a handle in the middle. Not only was everything fresh but they didn't have a single bad (or even average) beer out of all the ones I tried. On top of the fantastic food and beer was great service from both our servers (they switched in the middle of the shift apparently).

At the end of the night the bill seemed little high but considering the two beers I bought to go, all our food, and the amount of beer we consumed the price was very fair. Russian River kicked serious ass and I'd recommend it to anyone even considering going there.

Great beers, second to no one. Food is limited but the pizza is excellent. To me service is great but I know at times it falters, sometimes because of staff, most times because of the customer. With the opening of their new brewery 8 miles away much is expected of the new pub but for my friends and I, the 4th St pub will be the place where everybody knows our name!

Prost!!

Came for the Pliny and was not disappointed. We had a flight and appreciated almost all of them as very good or better. They should open a second brewery in Grand Rapids ( beer city), they would be welcomed there. The place was crowded and a little loud even though we were there for a late lunch. The service could of been a little better but was good. The bites are great and I recommend them; and I was raised on great Chicago Pizza (flat and stuffed, not deep dish). I am an admitted pizza snob, but loved the bites. The sandwich was ok, but next time I staying with the bites.

Never a dull moment, hard to find a quiet time, or a seat. Good food, sours much better than expected, other beers run the gamut from decent to great Worth the wait? Depends on how bad you want a Pliny....
