Served in a pint glass at the brewery.

Soft, near medium carbonation. Smooth, medium-full body.

Very dark reddish brown. Cloudy, with a decent tan head that had good retention and left patterned lacing on the glass. Nice looking.

Aroma: Complex and appealing, with no funk or farm animal notes. Lots of dark fruit and some floral and spicy notes.

Taste: Loads of dark fruits, especially prunes, with some chocolate, sorghum syrup and raisins. Nice aftertaste. Mildly bitter overall. More dried plums than any beer I've ever had!

Excellent aroma and mouthfeel, very good flavor and easy drinking although unlike anything I've had before. Milk stout meets saison?

Thanks to John for this one. 12oz. bottle into a Cigar City snifter.

Pours a 1.5 finger cream colored head with good retention. Beer is a clear, dark, almost opaque mahogany. Lacing is thick and layered with great stick. Very nice looking beer.

Nose is raisin, molasses, brown sugar, dark fruit and Belgian yeast. This one throws me off a bit.

Opens raisin, plum and anise. Notes of spice, peppercorn, molasses, brown sugar and booze in the middle with Belgian yeast, more spice and loads of plum, prunes and raisin on the finish. Sweet, fruity finish. This is a strong dark ale.... and a pretty tasty one at that.

Medium bodied with ample carbonation. Prickly and lively in the mouth and aggressive and bubbly going down. Messy finish with a lingering, syrupy aftertaste. Solid.

This beer is almost certainly mis-charactertized... as a Strong Dark Ale, its pretty good. The flavors are well integrated and the feel is just aggressive enough. The barrel character however, is almost completely missing. Worth trying.

Poured from 12 oz bottle into snifter.

A: Pours black or very dark brown with a light reddish tint. Small one finger off white head that settled immediately to a thin ring around the edge. Moderate stringy lacing.

S: Sweet rum, raisins, cherries, and a slight grassy note.

T: Plum, cherry, vanilla, and rum. Some faint earthy hops. I was looking for more farmhouse and saison characteristics, but they are very subdued.

M: Medium body and average carbonation. Finish is slightly sweet and dry.

O: Interesting brew. Rum barrel aging tends to dominate the nose and flavors. Highly drinkable, but I might not have classified as a saison given a blind tasting.

12oz bottle from Sprayberry Bottle Shop (Marietta, GA). 12.99/ 4 pack. Bottled 10/2/14. Served in a Red Brick snifter.

Pours a muddy deep brown with a quarter cap of dense beige head. Nice retention and a fair bit of lace.

An overall sweet nose of rum, vanilla, soft yeasty notes, raisins and sugar. A little dark malt and spice comes through but the rum and sweetness steal the show.

Hooray for the rum barrel! As in the smell, it is the dominant profile in the flavor. Rum, earthy roots, wood, bitter fruit skins, dry yeastyness, raisins, vague roasted malts and a pronounced alcohol bite. Almost nothing resembling a saison here but that's fine by me.

Medium body with light carbonation. Sweet aftertaste of rum, bitter fruit skins and some plum.

I've never had a dark saison but Red Brick's 21st Anniversary ale is like no other saison I've ever had. Without a doubt this is all about its rum barrel aging. I believe I'll sock a couple of these away to see what the next 12-24 months brings in terms of development.
