Inspired by our legendary 20th Anniversary Imperial Stout, we’ve taken that recipe and aged half of it in oak barrels. You’ll enjoy big notes of dark chocolate and espresso beans with a mild oak character.

Poured from a 12 oz brown bottle into a clear glass tulip. Bottled on date is smudged but presumably released in 2015 -- a delicious add-in from good friend Erinn in ATL. Enjoyed in April 2017.

A: Black with chestnut brown edges with 1-finger dark beige head with decent retention and a few fingers of lacing that don't hold up with swirling.

S: Nutty, caramel, and oak barrel aroma with only a hint of sweet bourbon. A lot of mid-and-darker caramel malts come through with a little char. Raisin and prune come through with a bit of rum raisin in the finish.

T: Flavor is very enjoyable, reminds me of a rounded off Bells Exp Stout but without the licorice component and more roasty. Plenty of sweeter mid-caramel with a lot of char in the finish. Rum raisin and date come through more with warming. Finishes moderately bitter due to aggressive hopping, tannins from the oak, and char. Little to no bourbon character but a little oaky tannin sneaks in at the finish.

M: Supremely smooth and silky with moderate carbonation and medium body. Dangerously drinkable despite all of the flavors coming through.

O: A really accomplished stout that I hope Red Brick brings back in the future -- a really great beer that would be a popular fall/winter seasonal. Thanks Erinn!

No label information. Imperial Stout is brewed in the style of an American Imperial Stout, partially aged in oak barrels. Available in limited release 12 oz. bottled 4 packs and on limited draft.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle to a snifter glass.

(Appearance) Pours a crisp, foamy head of a deep brown color over a near black body. Retention is below average and there is no visible lacing. 3.75

(Smell) Chocolate, delicate roast, caramel grain and light syrup malt notes. Gentle bourbon notes, dominantly vanilla. Some mild funk, yeasty dark fruit and cardboard gaining. Potency is moderate. 3.5

(Taste) Flavor largely follows the aroma, but with a much richer body to save it. Blending of heavy roast barley and spicy licorice, with undertones of burnt chocolate, grain alcohol and molasses, some creeping oxidation. Bourbon remains subdued, with many of the subtleties of barrel tannins and vanilla gentle to entirely faded. Finishes roasty and lightly viscous with a trailing dark fruit finish. 3.75

(Mouthfeel) Texture is slick, lightly residual, mildly oily, medium dry. Carbonation is moderate, generating a medium frothiness and a medium crisp finish. Body is medium for the style, short of heavy overall. Balance is mildly roasty bitter and dark fruit acidity over sweetness. Alcohol presence is mild and there are no off characters. 3.75

(Overall) Again, Red Brick crafts a decent, but not exceptional Imperial Stout that is certainly passable, but misses the mark for me on the bourbon qualities, which is what drew me to sample the beer in the first place. Little oak nor bourbon impact is detectable in the flavor and aroma of this beer. These gripes aside, it still drinks quite solid and has a great deal of Imperial Stout depth and character, but has some mild oxidation, and as mentioned, a lackluster barrel-aging character. It is not significantly distinguished from their 20th anniversary ale. 3.75

Pitch black, Red Brick's Imperial Stout pours thick, with a light layer of tan head. The mouthfeel is a tad lighter in body than expected from the ropy appearance of the pour. The smell is woody with notes of chocolate, iodine, vanilla, and darkly roasted nuts--the combination is distinctive but not unpleasant. The flavors are strongly bitter and a bit smoky, redolent of burning leaves, wood chips, and light peat. Intense, verging on overpowering; this could perhaps use a bit more sweetness to provide balance.

This beer has a strong bitter after taste that overwhelms the palate. It's light and complex in the mouth, quickly followed by a pleasurable toffee or nut blast, but then overcome by hops. It says that it is 50% ale aged in oak barrels, but it's hard to distinguish, and therefore, to appreciate. I'm passing it on for my husband, who has the opposite preferences as I.

This stout is impenetrably black; strong light directed at the edges reveals that it is murky and effervescent. It pours to a nice thick, sticky-looking pebbly brown head that leaves moderate rafts and spots of lacing in its wake, but diminishes quickly to a collar and a haze. On the nose, it is moderate in intensity: a delicious blend of chocolate ice cream and molasses sitting on top of some oaky tones and booze. Flavorwise, it presents itself as a very nice blend of bright, sweet caramel and toffee with lesser amounts of cocoa. The finish is toffee-like and boozy, slightly sweet and very warming from the alcohol, with lingering coffee and chocolate notes that last a minute or two. The big mouthfeel is commensurate with the full body, and the texture is very creamy and quite sticky. The carbonation, while lively, is unobtrusive; the alcohol is apparent, but in a very good way. Very nice balance between sweetness and roast. (12 oz bottle, illegible code date)
