Real college atmosphere. Great craft and local selections. There own beers are always fun to try. Food is bar standard but done well. Great local place.

I've been looking at this place for years now, as it's more or less en route on my trips to VT. Finally I made a trip where my timeline synced up, and I was able to visit with the wife and tot. The vibe is really cool here, but kind of mixed. We went during lunch time so there wasn't much of a crowd, but there's actually really a lot to do here. When you walk in, there's a medium-sized bar and several tables. Labyrinthine (a word I seldom use, but love to) passageways take you to various other rooms. There's a large game room full of TVs, pool tables, and classic arcade games. There's an upstairs loft-style seating area that looks down on the floor below. And above that, there's a mysterious spiral staircase that leads to who-knows-what. Is there actually another bar area up there? Pretty neat if so. A lot to do here, but again, a quiet lunch versus a probably chaotic college-kid and/or sports crowd could most likely make or break the place for me.

[That said, this place is kid-friendly, with high chairs and a kids' menu.]

Getting on to the beer. The selection was good, including 4 house beers (available in sampler flights), several guest taps, and a variety of bottles and cans, and a kombucha. House beers included Pillow Hat (a session IPA right up there with Boat Beer and Virgins & Diamonds), Holy Mole (a Hunahpu-style adjunct stout), Oborus (a lemon gose), and King Tut Hat (a decent DIPA, but my least favorite of the bunch). Good enough to make me want to get a pint, but I had a long drive ahead.

Service was okay. The girl was a little distant, and service was a bit slow considering there were only like 5 people there to wait on, but still not too bad. I had a small chat with who I assume might be one of the owners, and she seemed quite knowledgeable and friendly.

Food was pretty good too. I got the shrimp/goat cheese quesadilla which was satisfying, and the wife had the lobster ravioli, which she said was really good. Other pub grub options, burgers, pizza, etc.

This place actually surprised me a bit. I expected a rinky-dink corner bar with a couple sub-par homebrews on tap, but nope, it did not disappoint. And with quality brews pouring, I'd say Bacchus is definitely worth checking out.

Baccus is a brewery, bar, restaurant and joint of fun located in the cool and funky, hippie little downtown of New Paltz village, the ultimate college town. I stopped in for lunch and a taste of their beer on a cold day. The place reminds me of Jackie O’s in Athens, Ohio (the towns themselves have a similar vibe). A little dark, a little unkempt-looking, a little earthy and very laid-back.

I sat at a table by the window overlooking the street. The printed menu is too vague so you will need to ask the server for whatever is on tap that day. They have 13 handles, with 4 dedicated to the house brews. I had their Triple IPA, Oblivion- a fantastic brew, smooth and balanced despite clocking in at 11% and change. Among the guest brews, Founders Breakfast, Old Rasputin, Hurricane Kitty, Troegs…

They claim to have 400 different beers, and maybe they do. Their bottle selection is fantastic- check out those vintage brews at not-unreasonable prices, including Sierra Bigfoot ’09, Brooklyn Monster ’07, Super Kitty 07-08-09 and Dogfish 90 ’08 (I wonder if that is still be drinkable).

Food-wise, I had a veggie burger the menu claimed to be house-made but it looked to me like it was out a freezer and/or the Sysco truck. Wasn’t terrible, though, and at eight bucks, can’t really complain.

They mean business here with their beer and I’d love to come back and explore more brews.

Very impressed with this little brewery. The restaurant was eclectic and mediocre in my opinion. The bar I sat at had a severe tilt which did not bother me and instead added to the charm of this place. My burger was not just ok and came on an oversized roll with curly fries which appeared to be straight from the frozen food section of the local supermarket. But the beer....oh the beer. Very good, to say the least. On tap was Country Bumpkin, High Treason, and a session IPA which I did not try. The Country Bumpkin was a Berliner w/ homemade pumpkin syrup and it was great! High Treason was a sour Porter aged in Rum Barrels and was very grew on me more and more with every sip. Growlers were available for all things on tap, which lucky for me included Eastern Standard from Peekskill. Warning: the growlers are pretty pricey. $26 for the ES (my glass) and $35 for the High Treason (my glass). Can't wait to visit again.

Store front brewpub just off busy intersection in the heart of New Paltz, parking is often a challenge. Walk up entry to a serpentine bar on the right that seats about a dozen, and additional table seating throughout the dining room and along the curbside windows. Place has a bit of hunting lodge/ rustic ski lodge feel to it. 8 of their own, often excellent beers on tap, and an extensive (around 300) bottle list. Food is upscale hipster, very tasty and on the pricey side. I try to grab a beer here whenever I'm in town.

I'm very impressed with this young brewery. They only have one rotating beer of their own at this time, but the quality is very high. They seem to be focused on barrel-aging, sours, Belgian styles and of course...IPAs. I see a lot of potential here and I can't wait to see what caliber of beer they'll be producing in a year or two

I tend to visit this bar at least twice a month. This bar/restaurant is attached to a pool hall so its a nice environment for almost any crowd. The started brewing this year and usually have 1 beer from their small system on tap. The bar is small and the bar tenders are usually pretty friendly. The restaurant space is spread out and there is space upstairs if you want to sit away from the bar.

The food is usually pretty good. I tend to bounce around the menu. I find the dinner prices to be a little high but the lunch menu is pretty fair.

They have about 10-12 craft beers on tap and their selection is always pretty varied. They have a ton of bottles in a walk in cooler behind the bar. They carry most of the core beers on bottle from most of the craft breweries distributed to NY.

They started brewing recently on a small batch system and they have made some pretty interesting beers. I have had their coffee beer which was barrel aged and their blueberry sour. Both were good and I would definitely recommend trying their offerings.

Overall they probably have the best beer selection in New Paltz. Their food and service is good but I find their prices to be a little high for the local market. I would definitely recommend checking this place out when in the area. Cheers!

Tiny little bar/restaurant in a small Hudson Valley hippy college town. Bacchus has a very cool vibe, in the summer you can sit outside late and drink all night while you people watch. The bottle craft beer selection is almost endless, and weekends live bands rock out all night. Bacchus is old but trendy, connected to the bar is a pool hall to relax and drink good beer till the cows come home. A different place then most in New Paltz... that is not over run but drunk college kids. As for the food, during the week Baccus has different specials and make a pretty good burger. On Tuesdays make sure you hit up wing night. Tasty wings.

Interesting layout of the place, the inside is quite open in terms of seating and ceilings, with a more traditional bar/pub feel with wood and brick. There's a few patio seating tables to the front-side, which is cool for people watching over the street. Then, there's a quite large patio area in the back, which is quieter and more secluded. Funky and fun enough.

The tap list is fairly disappointing with a Lagunitas and Smuttynose offering being the most interesting option at the time of my visit. The bottle list while quite extensive, is pretty tame. There are quite a few nice brews to be had in bottle that I would consider to be on the higher end of American craft brews. However, you won't find anything really rare. Put it this way, any beer nerd could find something nice and enjoyable to have.

My only real problem with the place is that the Belgian bottled brews were really just marked up way too high. I mean, I like Roch 8, but I don't think I would pay $18 for a 11.2oz bottle. Likewise, the Orval was nearing $12.

Overall, worth a stop for a quick brew if you're in the area.

Interesting, funky, eclectic looking spot with all sorts of interesting stuff and other junk all over the place. Multiple rooms, levels, outdoor spaces. Varied and tasty looking stuff on the menu, my salad and a veggie wrap were well prepaired and went well with a Sierra draft. Fairly middle of the road, but still BA worthy taps. Bottles were extensive and slightly more interesting. Worth a visit. Good for a date lunch, or with the guys for a bite and few tasty ones in this hippy flavored little town

Stopped in here last night for a couple of brews while visiting an old buddy. Nice casual, college-type atmosphere with fairly eclectic decor on the walls. The tap selection was less than what I would have liked (maybe 10 beers), but the bottle selection was very impressive. I was a little surprised to be offered my first couple of beers without any glass; not what I'd expect in a "beer bar". Even when I did get a glass it still wasn't very style specific. Our first bartender didn't seem very knowledgeable, but the second woman seemed to have a good knowledge of beers, plus was extremely personable. New Paltz used to be a great place to get drunk and crazy back in my younger, wilder days living near Poughkeepsie. Now that I prefer quality over quantity, this would be a top choice to frequent when I return to visit.

i used to frequent this place when i was going to school in Hyde Park across the river. A decent tap selection as i remember, nice micro mix with a bunch of macros thrown in. A wide selection of bottled beers, belgians germans, american craft. Its a nice place to hang out with friends, drinking some good beers, good music playing a pool table as i recall. New Paltz is a nice town with a cool atmosphere, although i could do without the hippies driving around in vw sirroccosthat there parents gave them as a college going away present. All in all Bacchus is a cool spot , worth a beer detour off the nys thruway.

Beer menu with supposedly 400 beers, I saw 2 pages of 2 columns each, listing name, price and region (state or country). There was a fine selection of bottles, with dogfishheads, belgians, and NY breweries making impressive showings. Special on tap was an excellent semilocal porter, had a smattering of mid-to-high-end bottles.

Prices were around 3-5 bucks for a craft beer, and circa 6-8 for imported specialty brews. I was wary of the glassware--their selection of glasses did NOT seem to match their selection of styles. I'm not sure if some (but not all) of the bartenders know what to serve what in, and one dude even gave me a bottle without a glass! Only babies drink straight from bottles...

Good atmosphere, small but cozy and warm in mood. Music not too loud, pool, darts, good view by the street. Definitely recommended, will try again.

I don't know why the only brewpub in a college town closes at 10 PM on a weeknight, but it lends you a good excuse to walk up the hill to hit Bacchus. Ah, yes, Bacchus. Obviously named for the Roman god of Gilligan's Island, Jim "Thurston Howell III" Backus, the bar has been a New Paltz staple of the beer scene for some years now.
Sitting at the bar, you can well take the place in. They've got a front room green house patio with large windows and plants, and above you a balcony dining area 2nd floor that overlooks the bar. To the rear of the room is a pool table and darts. Mostly brick walls, some lined with Xmas white light strings and throughout, an array of this and that. A sled, a gas pump, an old baby carriage, a large buzzsaw blade, a vintage Coca Cola sign, an old sewing machine, a stop light, an ancient typewriter, a deer head, an old telephone, and so on. The faded and partially stained bar seats a dozen and has 2 towers housing the 14 taps. You'll find the area behind the bar lined with bottles and bottles and bottles, some of the many beers to be found on their list of 300 beers. On tap, mostly standards (Guinness, Harp, Bass, Newcastle, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Stells, Sam Adams Lager, Yuengling) and a few regional micros (Brooklyn Lager, Red Hook ESB, Harpoon IPA, Cooperstown Bench Warmer Porter). Some good bottles to be found. New York State beers are well represented here (Middle Ages, Brooklyn, Cooperstown, Davidson Brothers, Ommegang, Saranac, Wagner Valley, Mendicino) as well as some other regional and not so regional micros (Victory, Anchor, Three Floyds, Stoudts, Dogfish Head, Harpoon, Rogue, North Coast). And the imports, a good deal of 'em, Belgians, Germans, English and then this and that from here and there. Mostly the standards, nothing crazily rare but some nice finds.
The service was good and the bartender most certainly knows his Rauch beers. Very nice. The blackboard behind the bar reads "If you don't like what you're doing, you can always pick up your needle and move to another groove - Timothy Leary". True that.

Ahhhh... Bacchus! ( MASH fans will get it)
I lived here ( almost literally) for the 4 years I was in living in New Paltz what seems now like an Age ago. It was by far the best bar in town and in my opinion it still is, not counting the Guilded Otter.
I mean, this is a college bar. Long, still rotting in spots bar, aluminum pissing trough filled with ice ( I still love melting it) in the graphiti decorated mens room, rustic chairs and stools, tables made with sewing machine legs, crazy shit hanging on the walls and ceiling. Upstairs dining and some tables down and in the front windows. Pool table and vid games. Music is controlled by bartenders and becomes thier signature.
At least 12 taps, much is crap but good US craft beers can be found here. Brooklyn, Shipyard, Smuttynose, Harpoon, Keegan Ales, Otter Cteek/ Wolavers, Stone, Magic Hat etc. all rotate through ( you wont find more than 3 0r 4 of the above available at any time). While Taps are okay, the bottle selection is remarkable.
Bacchus claims 400 + bottles in stock. The only saving grace to this extreme selection is that this is a busy place at night and SUNY New Paltz students are known to be... experimental to say the least. Belgians, NE Regional and west coast craft brews, British and German - it would be hard NOT to find something you like or havent had before. They also keep them all refrigerated so they are as fresh as possible. You can surely get an old bottle, but most move pretty well. Every day offers some type of beer or drink special, not to mention Happy Hour.
I used to get outstanding service when I was a regular many years ago. Nowadays, these kids dont know who I am. And why should they? So I wait when its busy like everybody else. Food has been very good to very bad over the years. It depends on who's cooking I guess.
If your in the area, its worth a stop.
* 5-2-05 note: Bacchus is expanding into the adjacent pool hall building and will soon double it's square footage. Renovation is underway!
