"Bia Saigon Lager." Not to be confused with Bia Saigon Special, which has a similar green-dominant label design. This is 4.30% ABV. 330ml aluminum pull-tab can purchased at an Amart in Hoi An.

APPEARANCE: Fizzy and yellow. What a shock...

AROMA: Barley, sweet grain/adjunct (rice), cheap syrupy malt extract.

Aromatic intensity is rather low. Inoffensive, even if the malt extract does get under my skin...and I can't tell if it's actually metallic or if that's just the can.

TASTE: Follows the aroma, with rice taking the lead from midpoint to finish. Generic sweet grain/barley fills it out, but it ends up overly sweet and bordering on syrupy, with a malt extract flavour dominating.

Imbalanced, badly built, underwhelming.

TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, thin yet syrupy, unrefreshing, and of average heft on the palate.

OVERALL: Forgettable swill from one of Vietnam's worst breweries, Bia Saigon isn't any worse than Saigon Special, but it's noticeably worse than most macrobrew lagers from its country of origin. I see no reason to buy it again save for price, but it's not egregiously offensive and I've had worse. It could be buttery, watery, diacetyl-ridden, soapy, et al. Definitely a brew to avoid, but let's not get carried away shitting on it - it's not the bottom of the bunch.

D+ (2.40) / AVOID

Look: clear and pale yellow. Not that much head.
Taste: very clean and not that much taste. There was some skunky smell. Rice taste is also very much present in the beer.

It's an okay beer for a hot day in Vietnam and is present everywhere, but would not really recommend it.

Yellow with very little carbonation, topped with 2 fingers of white head. A little haze to the brew.

Corn, skunk, fresh hay, a sickly sweet aroma, slightly aromatic like perfume.

Corn, wet dog, cardboard, a sickly sweet taste, paper, malt, fresh cut grass. A little bitterness on the finish.

Medium, lightly syrupy body, little carbonation.

Found in Chiang Mai, drank April 9th, 2016. Been wanting some beer from Vietnam for quite a while, so I was pleased to find this brew. I had little expectation for it, and so it met up to my expectation.

Pours pale yellow with low white head. Aroma of light malt, hay and caramel. Taste is light malty and honey sweet with pretty much no bitterness. Average to lively carbonation.

Poured from a 450mL bottle into a glass in Hoi An.

Pale yellow with no carbonation and short lived head. Water clarity.
It smells lagery and really light and distantly sour.
It actually tastes okay. Crisp and light and clean, with a very mild sulfuric lager bite and a malty-dry endtaste. Perhaps it's my imagination, but it's like the yeast strain is actually noticeable-- there's a nice sort of spiciness and clean flavor. All in all, I'm happy with the beer. What a surprise!

Bottle at a restaurant in Can Tho. From notes.

A - Poured with a really fluffy two finger white head. Bright with a nice blonde/golden colour. Mild carbonation coming up. Decent rings of lace and a film of retention.

S - Mild. Got some corn and maybe wet cardboard. Nothing exciting there so I'm glad it was tame.

T - Corny. Sweet grain, medicinal, honey. Less offensive than it's big Export brother, but still not overly good.

M - Very little carbonation. Light to medium body and a clean finish with some sweetness.

O/D - Meh. Lagery and not unlike hundreds of others in the region. Nothing outside the box with this one and I felt like I knew what it would taste like before I started drinking it. Decent for what it was, but that wasn't all that much.
