22oz. bomber into half pint on 3/21/09.

A - Poured almost black with burgundy highlights around the bottom edges and thin beige head that diminished to virtually nothing.

S - Dry roasted malt with some mild coffee and chocolate notes, as well as subtle hints of earthy hops.

T - Roasted malt, coffee and a subtle hint of chocolate comprise the initial flavor of this dry Irish stout. Some nutty astringency and earthy hop bitterness also appear in the backend.

M - Medium body that's perhaps a tad thin and watery overall. Touch of astringency on the palate. Finish is dry with moderate bitterness on the tongue.

D - Solid Irish stout. It was nice to try something other than a hop bomb from Moylan's, and this particular stout was well done.

Drank (some of) a bottle that seems to be infected - at least that the most charitable thing to think.

Appearance was dark brown, nice velvety head with good retention.

Aroma was tart cherry cola with wet grass and straight up vinegar.

Taste followed the nose with that tart cherry cola flavor only further enforced by the presence of an incredibly high carbonation. Some chocolate and roasted malts still come through the nose but there is also a strong acidic character to the flavor.

Feel was incredibly carbonated - clearly overly so. Very dry finish.

Overall this beer clearly has something wrong with it. If I can land another bottle, I'll happily give it another shot.

Pitch black colored beer with a rapidly fading creamy head.Aroma is cocoa and coffee.Taste is irish cream, coffee and chocolate.Exceptionally smooth and very easy to drink. You could put down a dangerous amount of these on a hot day.Overall an excellent stout!!

From notes taken 06/12/17:

Dark brown with deep red hues, just barely clear in direct light. Foamy, fine, uniform head of moderate retention, a creamy brown in color, perfect contrast with the body. Aromas of coffee roast, freshly mixed cement, faint second-hand smoke. Palate is even more tobacco, some soil, a tart smokiness, and a metallic character which could be the hops, which are otherwise more earthy in the finish. Less complex but more balanced and robust than the Guinness equivalent, eschewing the good but arguably overwrought molasses and vanilla qualities for something that better lives up to the name of a Dry Stout. I don’t generally rate by style guidelines, so that is not the issue in that comparison. I just prefer something like this. Sweeter beers with strange notes are great when the alcohol is extra high, but otherwise they are just alright. Has nothing to do with hops, which can be hit or miss regardless of the amount. Barely full-bodied, with a soda-like prickly spritziness, albeit softening and smoothening much faster, to lighten it.

Looks black in the barlight, although plenty of highlighting hints at a lighter color. Not much lacing resulting from a soapy bubbled mess of a head.

Roasted malt, featuring some coffee bean, although it comes off as just a really weak coffee. Yikes.

I was very underwhelmed in general by the Dragoon. I thought they could have packed a little more punch into this one without sacrificing market share for their other stouts. Some hops add a bit of citric bitterness, but otherwise this is a cardboard cut-out stout.

Slightly charred, dry finish. Light body is acceptable but seems a little too carbonated and not quite smooth. Maybe it was my frame of mind, but I was not impressed with the Dragoons and I don't think I'll even try the bottle.

Poured from the bottle into a Guinness tulip. Opaque black with a tan coloured head.

Lots of sweet malt in the nose, plenty of vanilla. I'd swear this was aged in new barrels if I didn't know better.

The taste is less sweet with some good high roasted malt bitterness and astringency. The vanilla is much less pronounced. Not as dry as I was expecting but not bad.

The mouthfeel is where this one really falls down for me. It's very thin and lacking in body. It feels more like a schwarzbier than a stout.

I'm disappointingly underwhelmed by this beer, given that Moylans is one of my favourite breweries and Irish dry stout is one of my favourite beer styles. Needs a little work, this one, Brendan.

Quite a nice dry stout. Fairly roasty and chocolatey with quite a bit of flavor for a 5% stout. Pours very dark brown, near black with a creamy head that fades to a ring. Smells roasty, creamy, and a touch nutty, but all in balance and not too assertively roasted, but enough to create a nice toasty note. Taste is similar- especially creamy and a bit nutty with just enough roastiness to give it some flavor. A bit of light, lingering bitterness as well. Extremely creamy in the mouth, this is a very pleasant session beer, and quite a nice dry stout.

22oz bomber into nonic.

Pitch black, with not even a hint of ruby showing up when held up to the light. The head is dense, about one finger high, and settles to a thin even cap.

Very light roasty malts, giving off a little bit of coffee flavors, and just a hint of chocolate.

As expected, somewhat dry burnt malts. A little bit of coffee, but less sweet flavors in the flavor compared to the aroma. Full bodied. The burnt malts linger for a while after each sip.

A rather smooth and enjoyable Irish dry stout. Not a bad choice after drinking harsh DIPAs or a huge RIS. Recommended.

Pours a dark brown/black with a big 2 finger cocoa looking head. Head doesn't stay around too long.

Nice toasted malt, coffee, milk chocolate, and fruit aromas.

Light coffee, roasted malt with a medium hop bite.

Light body, dry, & fairly carbonated.

The lightness, dry finish, & low ABV make this sessionable.

Dark mocha brown, nearly opaque in the glass with two fingers of tan head that descends quickly. Dry and roasty aroma; light fruitiness, cream and toasted grain. Clean. Dark roasted coffee on the palate, subtle blackberry and bittersweet chocolate. Medium-light body, crisp and dry mouthfeel. Firm bitterness in the finish, an even mix of roast and hops. Pretty nice stuff, not spectacular but definitely solid and drinkable. This would be great on cask.

The pour was nice enough, very dark brown, basically black with no light shining through on this one at all. Rich looking head of tan on the top hung around for most of the session. The aroma was a bit light. Lots of roasted malts, with just a hint of cocoa underneath it. Really dry taste, but a little bland for me. Light cocoa and roasted malts, but it lacked alot of depth to put it over the top into another cateogory. Still though it was a decent little stout with a nice feel, and a 3.5 percent very drinkable. Not sure I would go here again though.

a: Black body, thin tan head.

s: The aroma is semi-sweet and chocolaty.

t: Roasted malt, chocolate and just a tad sweet with hints of smoke and a dry finish.

m: medium with ample carbonation. doesn't leave too much on the palate.

d: A great example of the style. good roasted malt backbone. very sessionable. You'll want to let this one warm a bit to capture its full glory.

From a 22 oz bottle this poured into my Duvel glass a very dark brown that looked almost black. Rich nose of roasted chocolate malts and coffee, vanilla, and smoke. Thick creamy mouthfeel. Flavor is rich and the hops and malts are well balanced. Nice dry bitter finish. Most enjoyable. Shows you don't have to have some huge ABV value to make a great beer.
