On-tap at Hollingshead's, on to the beer:

Intersting to hear about a pomegranate beer. This one has a dark pinkish, reddish-violet color...one that could be confused for a fruit juice. The aroma is of subtle pomegranate and some sweet & sour character associated with Chinese food. A snap of malted wheat hits the tongue at first, the fruit comes in and takes over the flavor. It's still a light flavor though. Some huskiness in the grain bill. Snappy and sort of crisp in the mouth, but that won't save this beer from being mediocre.

On tap at Moylan's on 7/19/09.

A - Cloudy, unfiltered ruby red color reminiscent of pink grapefruit with one finger of frothy off-white head that receded to a patchy film and yielded a decent amount of lacing.

S - Subtle wheat and bready malts with a slight tart pomegranate character and a touch of sweet fruit juice. Very faint sourness in the aroma. Subtle alcohol notes emerged as the liquid warmed up.

T - Opens with a subtle tart character with sour pomegranate that segues into a rich bready wheat malt aspect with more fruity, juicy sweetness. Flavor is very subtle but flavorful, and definitely not too tart at all.

M - Light bodied with a slight syrupy texture and a mild chewiness. Very mild tartness on the palate with enough sweetness to balance the sour notes on the tongue. No noticeable hop bitterness.

D - I think the pomegranate works extremely well with wheat beers. I've had a few and I've enjoyed them all. This is a subtle yet very flavorful wheat beer and super easy to drink, especially in the summer months.

Had this on tap at Hollingshead today.

I'll be frank: I had basically a double shot of this. I would normally never review a beer from a taster, but I'll make an exception for this one.

Poured a light red/pink. Big off-white foam head. Smelled like ... sweet berries. I'm not sure what pomegranate's smell like, but are they this sweet?

The taste is like sweet berry pop. Again: is this pomegranate? A bit chemicall-y. Blindingly sweet, really does seem like an alcoholic soda. Thin mouthfeel.

For the ladies in the house.

Taken from notes put into my iPhone. On tap at the brewpub. Poured into a 10 ounce glass that my wife ordered. Comes in at 5.2%.

A-Strawberry color. Not much head when brought out. A tiny white ring was floating on the top. Looks very clear considering it is an unfiltered wheat.

S-Not much going on in the nose. There is a minor smell of sweet berries.

T-When it first hits your palate, it is quite watery and then tartness comes out. It is not overly tart. I would compare it to a mild Sweet Tart. Aftertaste reminds me of red Kool-Aid.

M-I find the level of tartness to be nice on the tongue. Light bodied.

D-Good summertime sipper for the non-hop crowd. Low abv. Works well as a palate cleanser after drinking any of their IPAs.

For a fruit beer, it is not all that bad. Definitely a crowd pleaser for a lot of non beer drinkers.

Pomegranate Wheat pours a reddish color with a big lacing head. There is a very very sweet aroma, with a rotten garbage like note. The taste has a some what pomegranate flavor, but VERY very sweet. The flavor is weak and rather watery, with a bad and rather offensive aftertaste. Overall its a bit stale, and overly sugary.

This beer poured out as a bright reddish pink color, the head was a little foamy and white. The lacing was thin on the glass. The smell was fruity, a little tart and sweet. The taste of the beer was soft with some pomegranate flavors and a little touch of tartness in the finish. The mouthfeel of the beer was smooth and fairly refreshing. Overall this beer was pretty good I thought.

On tap at Newhall Refinery in Newhall, CA.

Pours a hazy red with a foamy off-white head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Foamy swaths of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of grain, wheat, and berry aromas. Taste is much the same with sweet berry, pomegranate, wheat, and earth flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of earth bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is easy to drink, but reminds me more of a fruit juice than a beer.

Serving type: on tap.

As far as the beer itself goes, I was pleased. It's pretty much what I'd expected - a fruit beer with a wheat base. And, to be honest, Pomegranite is at least a refreshing change. (And an expensive fruit!). Besides, it also offers a hint of tartness that makes the beer all that more refreshing - kind of like a "sweet tart".

My problem with this, and I hope it was only to do with the draft lines at the Oregon Brewers Festival (although I did taste it during the first session) was that it clearly displayed diacetyl. And maybe I'm just sensitive to it, but I found it off-putting in this specific beer. Had it been and IPA or brown ale or porter, OK, but I didn't think it was appropriate in a fruit beer. A secondary complaint would be a lack of head retention and lacing, but given the plastic cups at the OBF I can hardly say that the beer would have looked the same in a beer clean glass.

So, final conclusion, had it not been for the diacetyl this could have been one of my favorite fruit beers. It's at the very least fairly interesting, and probably worth trying. I'd love to get my hands on it again and see what's what.

The beer arrives from the tap with a pink-amber hue, quite hazy and there is a thin white head on top. The aroma smells lightly tart, a bit floral and somewhat like hibiscus, but it isn't really all that pronounced.

The flavor is tart with a light sweetness and a fruitiness that reminds me of watermelon, berries and of course pomegranate. This is actually quite refreshing and it is definitely dominated by the pomegranate contribution. This is almost note really a beer, though the finish does have a touch of hardy wheat flavors to it. This is definitely an easily quaffed, refreshing, summer time like brew. It is pretty enjoyable for what it is; simplistic, refreshing, fruity and with a tartness that is quite nice.
