Cloudy, near opaque dark gourd orange color. Tropical fruit hops and thick syrupy malt aroma. Hop flavors are delivered on the palette by a tsunami of heat, thick malt, and bitterness. Not how I want my hoppy goodness delivered. And not near enough hop flavor to warrant that much booze. Big body like beery orange sorbet.

Hot and messy, pretty much like a fresh barleywine. I guess you could age it but then you lose hop flavoring. Unfocused and poorly thought out.

I was interested in tasting this beer. I heard mixed reviews about it. But the idea of a cheesy / malty beer got the best of me.
No question that the heavy dosages of malt gave this one a real 'heavy' feel. I didnt detect anything in the nose, in fact, even in the taste. Except that it was big and bold, very big, almost too much.

growler to glass. personally this brew was too boozy for me. However, the first few sniffs and sips were actually really pleasant, but the more i drank the less i enjoyed it, it's honestly hard to discern much flavor by the end of this beer. finished really really dry, too dry for me. lacing was minimal at best. i will say by the end of the growler it started to ease on the palate booze-wise, but still fell short in what i expect from a DIPA (flavor and drinkability). bottom line a pretty forgettable brew and i don't see myself seeking this one out or buying again.

Growler

Acquired via trade
Thanks, cosmicevan!

A darker pour than expected: dark amber with dark orange (think scorched, fiery earth) edges along with a thin off-white head. There's not a lot of visible carbonation present. Eventually, the beer leaves the glass oily and spotted with stick. This looks potent and somewhat heavy in the glass.

Big aroma of pine and earth, along with a tinge of grapefruit rind, and sticky, caramel malts, and a warming alcohol presence.

The flavor follows the aroma, with notes of pine, earth, and some grapefruit leading the way. A somewhat sweet, malty DIPA, at least compared to the ones I most often drink, with some alcohol presence as well. Maltier than I'm accustomed to, with large amounts of hop bitterness. A very big, but balanced, DIPA.

Medium to full bodied for the style with low carbonation--somewhat oily.

Good enough, and I'm glad I got the chance to try it, but not one of my favorites.

Appearance: 64oz growler filled from Beer City in Deer Park, NY poured into a Duvel tulip. Colour is a hazy orange-brown. Thick finger-height head fades very slowly leaving a thick lacing. No visible carbonation.

Smell: Citric, hoppy, and bitter, also with a hint of sweetness.

Taste: Strong bitter hops are showcased with an alcoholic sweetness backed by a faint malt presence.

Mouthfeel: Medium-light body has a soft, silky texture with a sharp carbonated bite. Finishes crisp and clean.

Overall: A very hop-heavy, bitter, strong brew. Not as sweet or in your face as other DIPA's but it is still strong and offers some complexity.

Small head with light lacing. Color is a beautiful tawny gold, almost the color of a Lipton iced tea on a sunny day. The nose is a bit tart, green grapes and green apples--didn't betray any of the juiciness in the taste. Flavors are big and bold, carried by carbonation, but ultimately disappoint. I got orange, tangerine, and a lemon on the tail end, but the lemon interacted awkwardly with the juicy malts that hover beneath the surface here. Overlaying every flavor note was the burning taste of 10% ABV, not hiding in the shrubs here. The taste finished on the back of my tongue like the inside of a balloon.

This is a bold beer, but not a very comfortable ride.
